LIZARD SQUAD is Back. Planning XBL Attack. "Biggest attack yet". [UP: XBL/PSN Down]

After 3 days of downtime I was able to log back in to only get booted an hour later....
For real, what the fuck is Sony doing?
It's a fucking simple DDOS attack, once the attacks slow down the system goes back up automatically.
Ideally you won't even need to do anything, but of course it's Sony they most likely created a bigger mess by their counter actions. So we all have to suffer due to Sony's incompetence.

It comes down to either incompetence or lack of funds/personnel to handle something like this. Regardless of the reason maybe they shouldn't be trying to offer an online service if they can't manage it properly. PSN has never been great but now that they're charging us for it all of its faults are just becoming more glaringly obvious as is their inability to execute something this massive.

My PS+ sub runs out in February. Seeing as how I've only actually enjoyed 3 of the games PS+ has put out since then I won't be renewing. Thankfully I only spent $30 for it because that already feels like a borderline ripoff. If I would've spent $50 I'd feel even more gutted.

If true, that sounds like blatant incompetence if they have a paid network that can't handle all normal users at the same time.

Not true. Most networks are not equipped to handle an unnatural portion of their users accessing it at once. It's a trade off.

Why stop at Sony? Let's revolt against the government for not being able to arrest the hackers!

LOL, is this a form of the good old "you have to factor in the cost of the couch and the house too" argument? Being angry with Sony's frankly poor response to this is perfectly valid.

I'm simply asking the Defenders of the Realm when it is OK with them to express this.

Holy shit it's still down? Was going to try and remote in holiday vacation to go visit Xur. My titan needs that chest armor.

Is there any way to get around a digital game being locked? Would really like to play Diablo III instead of wondering why Sony is incompetent enough to allow a purchased game to not be played offline.

My digital single player paid games and free PSN games work offline. Just tested them.

Live has been about at 90% capacity. People can play online right now. PSN has been DOWN for about 3 days now. Aside from a grace period where they could log in.

So far it seems the attacks aren't even going on anymore. Why is it taking so long for the service to get up and running?

Don't give me the excuse that Live just handles this better. We know that. No excuse for Sony not to handle this just as well. If they can't handle it they need to take some of that PSN money and either hire MS to manage their online network or find someone who can.

well theres about twice as much PS4s out there though

XBL has been on and off for sometime now. There are people still not able to access XBL. Granted it seems to be affeting only a small percentage. But don't bring that " this is why XBL is better than PSN" crop here.

I have backed Sony in the past, but the fact that PSN can't maintain network parity with Xbox Live is starting to get really annoying. I wouldn't sell my PS4 because of this incident, but for the amount of money they are making from new plus subscribers over the last year they should be able to nip these type of situations in the bud quickly, not over the course of a week.

Completely agree. What are they doing with that money since making it a requirement on PS4? I guess it's not for maintaining their network.

I would much rather them not be giving away $1,200+ per year per subscriber in free indie games and instead use all of the $60 to network improvements. And, to be fair, I really like some of the games I've gotten for free, so it's not that I'm not grateful for them like some people on here who say "too many indies." It's just... Why waste so much money when it could be going instead to fixing the fundamentals?

Why is..."XBL is down too" a viable defense to what's happening with PSN? I don't have an Xbox anymore so what's happening over there means very little to me. All I know is I haven't been able to get online on my PS4 for some days now.

Because someone else is having a little success doesn't mean my bad experience is lessened.

My experience with XBL in germany the last 3 days: Only yesterday I was unable to log in into XBL, but setting the console into offline mode all games that were not multiplayer related were playable normally (DA:I for example). So I guess I had some luck not to be a huge victim of the DDoS attacks of IdiotSquad

This sounds perfectly acceptable for a non-paid service. You can't defend a paid service with this excuse.

My current PS4 is not set as primary, so I am fucked.

DRM, the only people it affects are paying customers!

Yeah. I remember hearing that this is why MMO's tend to be busted at launch cause they don't want to overestimate the amount of resources they spend on servers when they're most likely never going have that crazy load again when it calms down.

If Hollywood has taught me anything, it's that you need to hire a team of sexy counter-hackers to take down the smelly teenagers behind this.

We just need to find the nerdy but lovable smartass who's quick with a joke and even quicker with a keyboard, the minority in a wheelchair who keeps a level head and is the glue that keeps the team together, the jock who isn't all that great at computers but can kick ass, and the hot but shy cheerleader-esque girl who doesn't quite fit in, but by the end, finds her place and earns the respect of her peers.

Maybe we could Kickstart it and get PSN back sometime in 2015.

Your analogy is incorrect because of the scale of your analogy.

This isnt afecting "a family", but millions of people, a better analogy is imagining a full country being attacked, and yes people should get angry at the attacker, but also angry because their taxes money isnt being spent on protection (when it has been attacked previously).

They should be pissed because more money has to be spent by MS/Sony to secure against this sort of bullshit. OTOH, this is the problem with the SaaS model and 'teh Cloud' in general. Lots of companies have wound their 'infinity and beyond' revenue models around the axle of this goofy bullshit, so here we are.

That's no excuse. You're paying for a service. If Sony can't handle the traffic of their users then they are more incompetent in this regard than ever. It shows they can't manage an online network.

I've had my PS4 for a year now. Love the games. Love the exclusives coming out. But their Network continues to be its MAJOR weakness. Messaging system still has issues. Constant maintenance. Now it takes them days to recover from a DDoS attack.

But not only that. It seems Sony is just slow with everything when it comes to its online network and it's OS infrastructure.

If true, that sounds like blatant incompetence if they have a paid network that can't handle all normal users at the same time.

That wouldn't be normal user traffic though. Normal user traffic doesn't have the majority of your users all trying to login at the same time. Log ins are typically stilted over time. However since many haven't been able to log in at all.. what ends up happening is everyone trying to log in over and over, more times than they would ever have to log in during normal service. Then you add in Holiday purchases into the mix and it's a ton of traffic all hitting log in servers at once.

It's like when NeoGAF goes down during E3. GAF can handle normal traffic just fine because people are coming and going at their own times. However when E3 hits.. there's a surge of people on the website at one time, including lurkers with no accounts, and people are replying in threads so quickly that you can't even follow them half the time. All that surge in traffic happening crashes GAF.

Jesus, how long is this going to go on? I can't believe PSN is STILL down. All I want to do is download a few games and my wife wants to play Garden Warfare, but nope. For pete's sake.... 3 days now? Hopefully it comes back soon!

Paid or not paid it doesn't matter. As someone who has a lot of experience with this stuff, I can tell you that no one designs their network around handling 100% of their user base at once (obviously it's not that high but you get my meaning). It's simply not feasible. Like I said, a trade off.

Now, that doesn't mean there isn't a stupendous amount of incompetence at Sony. I'm simply saying that aspect of it is not an easy problem to solve.

So I see people in my friends list who lives 30 minute away from me on playing Destiny and my Uncle who is one of those who live 30 minutes away from me was able to access Playstation store.

I try to go in Playstation store or access Destiny I either get the maintenance message or connect to the PSN message.

Not going to lie, I'm a little annoyed.

Your argument is only valid for a non-paid service. Why are you trying to apply it here?

Basically this. It upsets me because I prefer the games and franchises they offer but these little things get so annoying after a while. Even from a Developer perspective it must be just annoying.

Live is much better managed than PSN. This is not an opinion. When the competition outperforms you in this respect it's time to step it up.

Where are you getting this idea? I think you're "talking out of school" a bit here, no offense.

I don't think there is any question here. The question is now "how bad is Sony at dealing with these kind of issues?". Pretty bad, IMO, from the look of it.

XBL was only completely down for about 16 hours on the 25th. (When the attack started)

Then there were some following hours where either purchasing or online MP was not working properly but thats about it.

The problem with PSN is that they are, more than 24 hours after the attack ended, not restored and this is just sad ...

I doubt I'll be re-subbing, either. I am already getting zero value out of it, as opposed to how glorious it was on PS3. I only really need a sub to one of these services anyway, and so far, LIVE has proven to be the better of the two for me from merely a functional standpoint alone. I'll just play my multiplayer on Xbox One and go single player only on PS4. Which, ironically, is the polar opposite of last-gen for me.

I LOVE my PS4, but I can't believe people are defending Sony this hard. The bottom line is Sony is providing a paid/subscription online service that is now down for the 3rd day running. That in unacceptable. Period. It doesn't matter who is "actually" at fault. It's their service, and Sony is ultimately going to be held responsible for it working or not. The customer is not getting access to what they are paying for and that lands on the provider. And this isn't just a video game industry thing. This is the same in any industry.

And Hey. Look at Jeff Gertsmann tweeting about this. I agree with him BTW. Can't wait for the gaming news stories on Monday to highlight this. Hopefully it forces Sony to fucking invest more into their network.

You know nothing about how networks/server farms are set up.

No one sets up servers for millions of dollars that will be useless 99.9% of the time. That's not how business works in the real world.

Hence why every MMO ever is fucked in the first few days, for example.

agree, now that it is a paid service the old excuses do not fly

Yes they were hit and it was out of their control but we are getting on day 3 now, LIVE has hit also and was only down for a few hours

Well I agree, but we are only on the 3rd day. It went down Christmas Day. Don't know where you get 4 days from.

Keep fighting the good fight for spending as little as possible for network infrastructure, you must profit on companies pinching pennies.

MS is best in class at handling this because they're a software company first and foremost.

I really shouldn't have to explain why Sony can't hire them, right?

...This is what going mad feels like.

Sony needs to do something more than what is being done now. They can't keep doing whatever has worked now.
