Changing gears, why do people care which film makes more money at the box office? As long as the movie makes enough to justify a sequel isn't that enough?
Marvel or SW stans who want to feel like they're the top dawg despite the same studio now owning both companies so it's just as valuable as a pissing contest into the wind.
Not true. Here are the top 5 plus Star Wars for every year it came out. I added more data for 1999 to prove it wasn't 50/50, even back then. Highlighted is when it is greater than 59% for worldwide box office total. You do realize the overseas box-office has completely changed in the 10 years since Episode III right? 50-50 was the norm then. It blew up since then.
Let's not forget that many here thought Rises was gonna blow The Avengers away (both financially and critically).
:lol Disney must love these kind of debates as they laugh their way to the bank.Marvel or SW stans who want to feel like they're the top dawg despite the same studio now owning both companies so it's just as valuable as a pissing contest into the wind.
I am probably in the minority but I was not in love with Avengers and am not that excited for the sequel.Age of Ultron.
But I am super excited for both.
Star wars has a lot more to prove. The last THREE films were bad and it's been coasting on good will from films from the 70s and 80s.
The MCU on the other hand has been printing money since Iron Man and has a lot more goodwill. AoU will outgross Avengers 1 pretty easily. Episode VII is not likely to outgross Phantom menace. The insane hype preceding that film in 99 is gone.
I'm giving it to assvengers for now. Mahvel is just tearing through everything, and Star Wars has been dormant for a while, after a string of dreadful movies. People are really letting their fanboyism get the best of them, and forgetting that Avengers Uno grossed 1.5 billion dollars.
It's just hard to predict. I think the low end for both is $1 billion even if they're bad, and the fucking sky's the limit for both if they are good. So, who really knows. One advantage Star Wars has is that it will have weeks (months?) all to itself thanks to it coming out in December. That could be huge for its legs if it turns out good.
There is absolutely not a chance in hell it doesn't get to a billion, which will put it right up there with Phantom Menace. The prequels won't hurt it at all. Everyone who hates the prequels will be there opening weekend. EVERYONE. So, as long as it doesn't turn out bad and people go back for repeat viewings, it'll do amazing. But, worse case I can't imagine it still not reaching a billion.
It's a new Star Wars with the return of the original characters played by the original actors, and the person who is blamed for the trash that is the prequels is gone. Episode 8 will suffer if 7 is bad, but 7 won't suffer because of the prequels.
1,000 fandango fans can't be wrong!
Star Wars doesn't even have to be good.
You're going to have to convince 17,18, 19 year olds that got burned by attack of the clones that star wars is totally worth it this time for a strong opening weekend, and we're past the point where special effects alone put asses in seats.
Star wars will do blockbuster numbers, but I can see this one being more dark knight rises than TDK.
Avengers will be a distant 3rd behind Star Wars and Jurassic Park. This is such a joke debate
There's two new Pixar movies too.Disney. They're going to make even more billions this year.

Yeah guys the prequels damaged the brand by making millions of dollars at the BO, spawning a hugely successful animated series that ran for 6 years and selling a gajillion dollars in merchandise. Star Wars will never recover I'm sure.
