Yesterday was some pretty horrid shit from #GG. I don't think there are any moderates left, just insane fuckheads.

I thought so a while ago, but yesterday convinced me that they actually are able to dig deeper than bedrock. :/
I just don't know how a "moderate" can associate with stuff like this.

They can't. Anyone associating with something like this is not moderate anymore than there are moderate tea party members.

Yeah it's getting bad. People with 10k+ followers tweeting some really cruel and hurtful stuff including doxx information.

Brianna Wu:

A while back, a journalist in the industry insulted a game developer I respect in a particularly cruel and public way. I unconsciously of put him into a “jackass” category in my head. This is a very bifurcated, unfair box - a mental shortcut that we all take without realizing it. It’s a very human reaction. This person hurt by friend, ergo he is bad and I should shun him. ...

To be blunt, I took the worst moment of this journalist’s life and I judged him by it. And it was unfair.

The reason I’m sharing this is, I think we’re all battle weary from 2014. How could anyone NOT be exhausted? It’s been outrage all year long. When someone does something we don’t like, we get into a pack and go blast them. This goes for all sides, even mine.

As I’m thinking about the person I want to be in 2015, that’s not it.

My New Year’s resolution is to try to show more patience and grace for the people in games.

Question:

How do some of you manage to keep up with all this GG crap every day and not feel like you never want to play videogames again?
Before I took an extended break from reading up on this mess, I seriously had trouble playing anything since all I could think of was GG and all the nasty shit associated with it. It's fine now, but that's only because I pretty much stopped reading this thread and unfollowed a bunch of people on Twitter that talked about it regularly (except Zoe, Anita and Katherine Cross) back in early November.

Reading back through some of this thread I'm seeing a bunch of the same people posting that were doing since the start of the 1st GG thread, and I really am curious if this stuff has made it harder to enjoy playing games.

And ofcourse I can't even imagine how people like Anita and Zoe cope with it all and still play games. If I were in their situation, I'm honestly not sure if I would be able to.

Awesome. :)

It'd be great if everyone did the same. There's a weird sort of culture around Twitter, where people like to interpret everything in the worst possible way, and then join in giant dogpiles of outrage. Reasonable or nearly-reasonable individual actions turn into a giant mess of awfulness collectively.

This is one of the underlying causes of Gamergate, really.

I disagree. It's hate, pure and simple.

It hasn't really made it less enjoyable to play video games for me. I can easily see how others can begin to feel that way though.

Why would this affect my enjoyment of videogames? People being assholes on the Internet doesn't diminish the quality or fun of a game. Playing Jazzpunk is a great way to get my mind of this GG bs

I dunno why, but it really did bother me while playing games. I often didn't want to play them at all and whenever I did get around to it, I found myself really distracted and unable to focus on what I was doing.

Ofcourse this didn't happen every single time I tried to play a game, but it was happening alot of the time.

So is it true that they're doxing Twitter followers of people who speak out against GG now? Does anyone know who is being targeted? I feel like just unfollowing a bunch of people just to be safe.

It's hard.
It's tough.

You just need to remind yourself that a lot of these people are just very young and impressionable, and that the figureheads are just horrible people to begin with.

To me, what is more distressing and disgusting is the fact that, to this date, only one AAA company as a whole has come out against GG (Blizzard), and even then, they didn't name it.

I'm sort of the same way, whenever there's something big on my mind it's hard to make it leave. Every now and then GG takes a hold in my head and just makes me pretty sour for the rest of the day. Usually I let it pass or something else gets on my mind. Sometimes I talk about it to some of my other friends, which is a bit hard because I'm the only one I know who keeps up with this whole situation, but it helps me formulate a way to describe this whole mess to people who are less familiar with the bullshit.

Also, quick question, any background on the situation of what Wu was talking about in her post?

Yea, that's kinda fucked up too. Though at this point I don't think it woukd be a good idea for any of em to officially denounce GG. The whole things has died down considerably and is now basically a fairly small (but very loud) group of awful people. I mean as much as I would love for some of the big companies (or better yet, the 3 console makers) I'd worry that it would just help rejuvenate the whole thing.

At the very least I have seen a bunch of employees on Twitter from some of these companies speak out against GG, like some Nintendo Treehouse people for instance.

It was making me genuinely kind of miserable for a while, which is part of why I've detached from this thread for the most part.

Yeah, Alison Rapp in particular even went on a blocking spree for any green and purple heart she sees following, retweeting or mentioning her.

Its why I stopped following it honestly. I still check this thread every once in a while but I had to stop reading it keep my own sanity.

I am so fucking cynical that my first response is "GG is going to declare this validation for everything they've done".

It reminds me of something Jon Stewart said recently, about Fox News gleefully condemning him for a minor factual mistake he made:

"We have to be right 100% of the time. They only have to be right once."

How do some of you manage to keep up with all this GG crap every day and not feel like you never want to play videogames again?

The whole #GG situation is depressing, but also, I hate to say, absolutely fascinating. I guarantee it's going to be studied in university psychology and consumerism courses.

It doesn't make me enjoy video games any less, but it's certainly driving me further and further away from gamer culture. When I see people refer to themselves as a "gamer" it makes me want to not have anything to do with that person.

I've mostly stopped following it. As far as I can GG has abandoned whatever pretense it had of being about gaming journalism anyway.

I totally agree. For me when I realised the scope of it opened up a huge can of worms inside of me and every little thing I dispised about the gaming culture from criticizing scores, jumping on when otherwise reasonable people say something stupid and irrelevant to fit a narrative against them, refusing to NOT hate someone and to tackle criticism against a fucking consumer product. All of which I've seen on this forum sadly.

That said I've turned much more optimistic lately. This thread and some others have really opened my eyes to some awesome people on GAF and many on twitter and Ghazi as well. It really brightens my day when I see refusal to hate and willingness to help.

Playing great games with strong female characters also helps. DanganRonpa wasn't perfect (please don't give me fanservice when I'm on public transportation), but still highly recommended with several female characters breaking stereotypes and masculinity being discussed (briefly). There are spoilers everywhere though.

People on a random 8 chan board attempted to swat Grace, srhbutts was also targeted by 8chan and her family was also targeted, but I do not remember what board. iglvzx was also doxxed.

The people that attempted to swat grace are probably going to jail according to this.

All the Swedish AAA companies came out against it as well (DICE, Avalanche, Machine Games, etc).

But, yeah. That's it. Publishers are fucking cowards.

Part of it for me is the revelation of just how much "gamers" base their lives around video games. Their entire identity is built around it. To me, someone who's played games for 30 years but has never built his identity around them, it seems unhealthy and actually cringeworthy.

Is there any specific reason why we'd hope the odds of arrests are higher in this case than any other? Sorry to be a downer, but the backend awful of swatting is being practically impossible to prosecute.

I made the mistake of actually clicking the link the reporter put on 8chan's involvement. Wow. First, kudos to the guy for actually digging through that. A daily beat/police blotter local newspaper writer deserves an award for something like that.

On the 8chan board listing, its tags are "raid dox random old-fag hate". So doxxing is officially permitted on 8chan now? I mean, it's been "banned" from the start but that never stopped a lack of enforcement before, but a public tag for it? Seriously? Thanks, internet! Today I learned about one of the most godforsaken and horrifying corners of your being that I didn't previously know about!

Speaking of the forum directory there, on a posts-per-hour basis #GG is now the 8th most active board. Even 8chan has vastly outgrown the need for #GG, so it's only a matter of time until its owner is discarded and forum abandoned the same as reddit and 4chan were.

At the very least, ban it from their official forums.

There are a lot of threads on official company forums that are obviously breaking TOS.

Same. I've been playing video games for 15 years but it's just a hobby. Seeing these people have such a warped perspective (calling others "NPCs", applauding their game accomplishments as if they were some monumental achievements) is just really disturbing

Following up on this bit, GG is following the same M.O. of past classy movements like the Kathy Sierra harassment in 2007 by trying to silence voices who speak out against them through organized intimidation. There's no pattern, they just want to make an example out of people.

Worst case scenario, get the contact info of your local law enforcement, and file a complaint with the IC3 if you have reason to suspect foul play through doxxing, swatting and whatever nasty noun-ing. For everyday life purposes, it's a good thing to have on hand. A few phone calls and some filled out forms can make a big difference.

Seriously. If your cheevos, trophies, or Steam badges are your most prized personal accomplishments, you need a fucking reality check.

I was a total geek in high school, and I was picked on for liking video games, but I had a whole lot more to myself than that.

wasn't it a swedish games industry group that released a statement on behalf of all the AAA studios? much like the ESA made a statement on behalf of pretty much every tech company in existence?

It's insane. If I didn't know better, I'd think it's some shitty Cracked or Onion satire. "I played Dark Souls for 30 hours so I am a superior human being with unbreakable resolve. Ha, you think you can defeat GG? We beat bosses all the time."

It's absolutely insane. I mean, I gave a little nervous chuckle reading those kind of posts, but it's so far past ridiculous that it's disturbing.

Only 30 hours? Pathetic. :p

But yeah, one should never tie their identity too closely to consumer products.

Yeah that was a weird one. I felt like finding that post and replying with "I didn't die until I fought the Capra Demon, and also I'm a feminist. Come at me scrub."

EDIT:

Oh also the most fun result I've seen yet of the SJW -> Skeleton plugin has been while trying to debunk someone's "Wikipedia Edits bought and paid for by Ghazi!" claims was coming across someone talking about "skeletonikipedia"

I swear I stared, head titled at that word for a good 10 seconds before it all clicked.

The plugin has just assimilated itself in my thought process now.

I get weirded out when someone posts a screencap or I go incognito.

It pales in comparison to the larger examples of hypocrisy we've seen this shitstain of a movement exhibit, but one thing that always amuses me is how people who use 'NPC' as an insult unfailingly adopt the speech patterns of cliché antagonist archetypes, (we are legion, resistance is futile etc.) the quintessential NPCs.
