NPD Sales Results for December 2014 [Up2: Nintendo Sales Notes]

I was curious that the wording of Nintendo's PR implies that there may have been a Vita game that sold over 250K this year (16 titles over 250k, and the top 15 handheld games of last year). Though they may have chosen 15 more for being a round number than for their being a Vita game at #16.

There is talk of 16 Nintendo 3DS titles not 16 handheld titles...

In 2014, 16 Nintendo 3DS titles sold at least 250,000 units. Of those titles, eight sold more than 500,000 units and three sold over 1 million units.

Yeah I doubt it's at 11. Probably closer to 10.5 million. The ratio was 4.9/8.3-8.5* (58-59% of sales) at the end of November.

10.5 million would be ~59%
10.7 million would be ~58%

*Assuming Bish's source was accurate.

Keep in mind that the PS4 was at a 36% ratio after November and it was maintained through December. I don't think that the ratio for XB1 will fluctuate much from November either.

But there's a difference between PS4 and XB1 situation, XB1 had a special big promotion for US only so the ratio should get bigger in favor US.
Also bish said 8.3-8.5 at the beginning of Dec, XB1 should be easily +5.0 million at the time.

EDIT: and this part "Keep in mind that the PS4 was at a 36% ratio after November", how did you calculate that?

I don't think anyone is trying to say that it shows something negative about PS4 software sales. It's simply better than what many people though.

I mean, you wouldn't do a double take if someone last month said that the majority of multiplats on the NPD list would show as doing better on the Xbox One than the PS4 in December when that wasn't the case for November?

No because as has already been said, they sold more consoles combined. New console sales means software. And add that to the fact that those games have already sold more on PS4 it's not really shocking to see new XB1 owners buying more games this month.

But most importantly. Do we even know the number split for those titles for December?

So now what? Sony's eventually got to swing back right? All the talk about early this gen about the ps4 being positioned for competitive price cuts will be tested now. But i don't know how realistic that is with Sony's health as a whole. Microsoft can eat the costs of price drops no problem. Maybe Sony waits until February and drops a bundle with The Order for 349.99?

I'm not really surprised by this turnaround though. Sony just hasn't really done anything to take advantage of their headstart. It seems nobody in north america sees anything but price when it comes to differentiating between playstation and xbox.

How do you know they're selling at a loss? They removed the expensive Kinect peripheral and its been reported they gained some manufacturing wins. It was probably a loss with the holiday bundles because of the games involved, but now I'd wager it's about break even with real revenue coming from Gold, accessories like the controller, headsets, media remote, and of course software sales.

Kinect isn't expensive not really, it's only $75, not +$100 as you think.

Microsoft is more interested in getting the system in living rooms to sell people on games and services. They can eat that cost as a company pretty easily.

another misguided statement.

xbox has so much unlimited resources they had to take out kinect and close down their tvtvtv studios and slash another 80 bucks to stay competitive. sure.

if xbox can access microsoft's vault easily then they would've sold xbone+kinect at 399 and "took the loss because they easily can."

of course getting systems to homes is step 1 of the process to being successful and xbox showed the past year that 1) people didn't give a shit about the brand and 2) is even getting crushed when priced competitively so there was no other way to be able to get to step 1 other than slash the price and take a loss.

about ms taking over the living room, just lol. in the age of netflix the feature they cane up with was an hdmi passthrough.

they bet on the wrong horse. i don't even know that they're still interested in tvtvtv seeing that they closed the studios responsible for their original programming.

in the US, 2 million for 3DS and 1.3 million for Wii U

speaking of which, those who said the Wii U version would sell better in the west because of some contrived multiplayer *reasons*, LOL

But the Wii U game was only out for a month!
At this rate it'll outsell the 3DS game in no time!

I just think it's funny that this is supposedly "not surprising" when I highly doubt anyone here would have predicted it just 2-3 weeks ago. I mean, GTA V did better on the PS4 last month even with the GTA V bundle doing very well on Black Friday.

I wonder if Sony even cares that MS is catching up. They've got the rest of the world locked up and they've got to be happy still selling systems at $400 not to mention all the PS+ accounts that go with that. The PS4 has probably wildly outperformed their expectations already.

I think the XB1 sales will hinge on the redesign, at least in the long run. If, somehow, they are able to capture lightning in a bottle like they did with the 360 slim the WW gap might not be as enormous in the end.

Otherwise the one won't even come close to the 360's LTD sales. The current design has next to zero appeal outside of the U.S./U.K.

The controller also needs some small adjustments.

People were crazy to think that, but Smash sold well on Wii U considering the install base and the fact that was available on 3DS.

Did we get a source on this? Because I thought standalone was going to be $150. That would be quite the up mark.
was it in 2010 when the cost of a 360 was 99 bucks and xbox was selling it at 249?

on the other hand, that's how they make money. materials get cheaper but they don't lower the price. so in the first year the profit would be smaller compared to year 5 or 6.

then again they make more sales during the first year, etc. so there's that kinda like what walmart's strategy is.

Looking back at that thread you're correct on the early Dec. as opposed to the end of November part. The PS4 also had a ton of promotions in the US as well, which is why it sold considerably better than it did in November.(in addition to it being a 5-week month)We should probably figure 5.0-5.1m for XB1 then at that time.(59-61% defending on where within the 8.3-8.5m range it hits)

Did we get a source on this? Because I thought standalone was going to be $150. That would be quite the up mark.

Standalone is 150 dollars specifically for that purpose. Microsoft wants those people who are on the edge about buying a Kinect SKU or not to go with the Kinect SKU because it will save them 50 bucks down the line, instead of buying a Kinect-less SKU now and maybe not buying a Kinect later.

It's not like these were new releases this month. A lot of people who owned consoles simply already bought them last month.

I doubt it. Sony has been very much sticking to a set plan this gen and it's gone better than they expected so far. This is the year the PS4 exclusives start hitting hard and I think they'll plan to rely on that more than anything.

It should have never been surprising that it would be neck and neck in North America. What hurts MS is that they longer are going to have that huge cushion in that territory that they had last gen, Sony fixing nearly all of their biggest issues from last gen should see to that, which could turn the tide worldwide and in terms of being the lead platform for most third parties (which even that probably isn't that important since both consoles are basically PCs)

there were very few new games this month. many that already had the consoles already had those games.

Soon US will offically belong to Microsoft again.

Sony really screwed up.

Nah. I think this guy is closer to the mark:

75USD was an estimate for parts (at least around November 2013). You still have to pay someone to put it together, ship it, and a cut to the retailer for selling it. Not sure if that would keep it at or around 100USD total (I do not work in logistics), but if you are selling it separately then you want a mark up to make it worth the shelf space. Like controllers.

Edit: yeah, was already covered.

If not at a loss why were they banging us over the head for so much money

Just gonna drop this now before I'm out for the night:

Sony has $20 billion in cash. Microsoft has $80 billion in cash. Microsoft is worth $300 billion. Sony is worth more than $20 billion.

Just to see if that helps put some things in perspective...

Really solid sales for Kingdom Hearts HD 2.5 ReMIX, it didn't have a drop over the previous title which sold exactly the same (273,000).

Final Fantasy Type-0 HD won't get close to those sales.
