Spelunker? As in the old NES game where if you fall a centimeter you die?

Yep. The trailer even proudly shows off the jacked-up gameplay by showing characters suddenly dying in the middle of the "sizzle reel" action and stopping the trailer so the character can hold their busted ankle...

I don't know, was Spelunker HD good? There seems to be some love for it here, I enjoyed Spelunky for its compelling challenge, but Spelunker's a different thing. The only thing I liked about the trailer for Spelunker HD (never bought the real game) was the multiplayer, but it's not co-op so it seems like just a novelty multiplayer mode more than something that's structured for groups to enjoy. What's good about Spelunker besides the fact that it's so old-school that it burns?

(And yes, this truly sucks as a Square tease, but how dumb of any of us to expect anything...)

^ Hey, they got close to their tech demo after all :p

What has atlus done?

Atlus has not done anything bad so far...outside of mega trolling in their marathon celebration last year, and even then they had tons of games to show.

Its coming up...so we'll see what they have this year, Atlus is not fail like SE who are way bigger then them yet cant even make good games anymore proportionate to Atlus's track record

Eh. Maybe I'm weird but somehow I'm a bit hyped. I mean, it may be fun...

but it's ps4 exclusive.. eh?

oh. f2p.

oh... microtransaction.

eeeeeeeeeh

Huh, I thought people liked Spelunky (that game is from the same series as this, right?)

Gaf reactions are so weird...

Spelunker predates Spelunky by a couple of decades. I'm not sure if it was an arcade game, but I AM aware it was on the Famicom and NES back in the day.

Is it popular in Japan? When they revealed it, seeing the picture of the audience(lots of enthusiastic girls), they seemed pretty stoked.

Yeah, Spelunker is actually still pretty relevant. Just in the past few years we got two PS3 games (Spelunker HD and Spelunker Black), a PS3/Vita Collection of the older Spelunker games, the Spelunker character had a cameo in 3D Dot Game Heroes (and there was a "Spelunker Difficulty Mode") and Everyday Spelunker on mobile.

It's like Spelunky in that at first you just seem to randomly die a lot, but once you start figuring out how things work it becomes a lot more manageable. A lot of the fun comes from noticing where the game expects you to die and going "nope, not this time!"

Also, the multiplayer was co-op. You could just ignore everybody and try to speed ahead, but once you run out of lives the only way to come back is to have somebody else come over and revive you. I didn't get to play it much on the US version (sadly nobody was ever online), but playing with Japanese people in the demo was hilarious.

For PS4 guys.

It's not like Spelunker needs to have cutting edge graphics. Heck, I played the majority of Spelunker HD in 8-bit mode.

I know about Spelunker. It's just that everything I've seen from Spelunky also reminded me of Spelunker, so I thought Spelunky was a new version of the game or something.

But if Japanese people liked than it probably was popular. 1-hour for the reveal must have been pretty dull if no one was there.

I think it's kinda endearing to see such a(what most of us would call) "obscure" old franchise still alive and kicking. There's been larger franchises that made MORE of a dent, but are now dead, which this one has been around since the 80s and people(particularly the Japanese) still love it. It's kinda cool.

And Japanese PS Home had a Spelunker adventure area, where you had to collect treasure while avoiding hazards. It was janky, but it existed because there was interest.

PS4 Spelunker HD? Fuck yes.

Also, LOL at people using Spelunky as their reference point. Buncha noobs up in this.
Hey man, at one point I didn't even know the difference between Spelunky, Spelunker and Steamworld Dig, so I'd say I learned a lot in the world of digging...

I need to start playing these games, they actually seem pretty fun =X

Yeah, I didn't even know there were still rereleases for Spelunker, I remember seeing the NES game once and that was it.

Hopefully SE learned how to make F2P with FFAgito and this is pretty good too.

Wizardry is another example.

I'm just flabbergasted at this point.

This seriously warranted a teaser site? Really? They might as well have just came out and announced it and saved a few people some sleep.

If you have a PS3, Spelunker HD is a pretty good place to start. The game lets you save and quit in the middle of levels, so if you die you can at least pick up where you left off. Or if you have a mobile device I'd say give Everyday Spelunker a shot. It's basically a port of the NES game but with unlimited continues.

I unfortunately don't have a PS3 =X

But I know people that have, so I'll try playing there.

Any good version on PC? Or do I have to play Spelunky and Steamworld Dig here?

As far as I know, Spelunker HD is only PlayStation platforms, whereas the original games are on mobile/Nintendo platforms (though the Nintendo versions aren't updated with continues and rope assist features).

I haven't heard any complaints about the PC versions of Spelunky and Steamworld Dig though - and they're both great games too!

Oh, too bad. I'll try playing at my friends house then.

I'll get the mobile or nintendo versions if I like the HD game.

Have Square finally achieved master troll status now? I feel the past year has been incredible as far as trolling their fanbase is concerned.

When Atlus or Kojima troll, it's usually worth it or straight up funny.

But with SE, it's just mean-spirited D:

At least when SE trolls they show us a game, not clothes...

I don't see much difference between Atlus/Kojima trolling and SE trolling, other than the fact that GAF loves the first and hates the second.

Ask yourself this: if Square Enix just sent out a press release/announced Spelunker Z in an issue of Famitsu, would it have gotten global press coverage? No. Square Enix uses teaser sites as a cheap and easy way to draw attention to projects that wouldn't otherwise receive those eyeballs. They've been doing this for years. The issue is that some of guys still haven't learned. :p

minna de, minna de, minna de SPELUNKER!

great trailer, please don't ruin this game with too much micro-transaction bullshit SE.

TGO

Hype Train conductor. Works harder than it steams.
Is that a fucking mobile game? Seriously WTF is wrong with you Square

Sure, Atlus is the least worst. SE is the second worst, and Kojima is the worst in trolling. But saying that what Kojima and Atlus does is "fun and worth it" is bs.

Eh, I legitimately enjoy what Atlus does with their teasing. That stream with the Persona Q and Persona 5 announcements was wonderfully surreal and entertaining.

Edit: and like Flux said, Atlus delivers, SE basically never does.

No it's not, because they deliver things of substance that are genuinely exciting in the end.
Right. That clothing line for MGS is everything I've ever wanted.

Spelunker is popular in Japan, I'm pretty sure people there disagree with your statement.

Was it the thing he was teasing via Twitter? How is that comparable to a dedicated, countdown website? And what about P.T. leading to the Silent Hills reveal? What about Joakim Mogren? When's the last time Square Enix has teased something leading up to a great reveal like that?

New SaGa tease? Type-0 HD? Dragon Quest Heroes?

SE has LITERALLY only done countdown websites for when they are publishing a small project or port. It has been like this for YEARS, that's the way they use to announce small games.

Oh yeah, I do remember DQH teasing. Alright, I guess I'm really just thinking about their teaser websites when it comes to SE building something up and then announcing something minor.
