Evolve Review Thread

Getting better reviews than I'd personally have given it after time in the beta. Some of the least fun I've had in a game in a long time.

No, they don't.

I'd argue that the best ones keep you coming back solely because they are a ton of fun to play, and not because they have you on some unlock treadmill.

Getting my counterstrike grind going today

Hm, game seems to unpopular in this thread (reminds me of Destiny but that game spawned like 17 OT threads)

I am mainly curious will GAF-PS4 be playing this game. Otherwise I guess I'll have to make friends ingame with randoms (like I did in ME3 MP) which can take awhile possibly

Still deciding on purchase. My must buys are Order & Bloodborne btw

I bought Evolve.

I'll stream or something as soon as I'm done pre-loading. This is the first game I've pre-loaded on Steam where it didn't let me choose the hard drive I wanted to install it on. Hopefully I have enough space on my primary.

The game looks fun to me it's just the DLC confusion that has turned me off.

I don't want to pay that much money for something and feel like I'm missing that much.

This came in the mail today, and even though I am intrigued, I'll be returning it.
None of my friends are interested in this game and it very much looks like a game to get if your buddies are also going to be playing.

I'll probably buy the game when it's down to $20 or so. There isn't enough content to justify the price tag. Same problem Destiny had but at least with Destiny the grind took a lot longer to get old.

9. Don't buy the game.

Quick note on that, the A-F system is worth what it's worth (and doesn't seem to be used in reviews generally?), but applying a number corresponding to that is, and has always been, hugely flawed imo.

By putting a 60-100 only as "acceptable", and 0-59 as a big giant "fail", you basically infer that 60% of your measuring scale is worthless.

How do you measure the last 40% of anything without measuring the first 60%? The part you're not understanding is that the grade isn't the 95, it is the 5 percentage points missed. But we're going to look on the bright side and focus on how much of whatever it was was correct, so call it a 95, not a -5.

I give my experience with the beta a 9/10. The gameplay feels tight and they have diversity in the maps, characters and game types.
Interested in seeing how this games does. So far one of my best experiences with next gen.

This just seems intentionally obfuscated. There are three versions of the game: the base game, the game with a season pass included, and the game with all planned dlc included; all of which you can pre-purchase. The season pass contains 4 hunters, or, you can buy them separately. You can also purchase skins and the Goliath seperately.

Pre-ordering any of the above versions unlocks all of the base hunters/monsters immediately and includes the Goliath.

This doesn't feel as mind bending as Ubisoft's clusterfuck of retailer exclusive content and various editions, but I could see how it's confusing if it's presented like this.

5 out of 10 is not average, its fucking horrible. I don't see people clamoring for doctor's with 50% success rates, or cars that start 50% of the time, and no one thinks they deserve to pass a test for getting 50% of the questions right.

What about a NFL quarterback with a 50% pass completion? Or a NBA player with a 50% 3-pt success rate? Do you think they're terrible too?

I think the earliest an OT for a game can be posted these days is after 6 PM EST on the day before.

Really? Didn't it used to be a week before launch?

6 PM EST on the day before seems odd considering so many people get their hands on early copies of games thanks to retailers breaking street date.

Meh I watched several streams this weekend and all the maps looks the same.

You could literally do this with any game with a season pass. Much ado about nothing.

Even content beyond the "season pass" has been a thing in the past. Forza Horizon 2 is a good example of this, and I didn't feel ripped off at all. The problem with Evolve is that they are announcing way too much post-launch DLC. They should have waited to reveal post-season pass content. Individual prices outside of the bundles are too high as well.

Trying to make something out of nothing. 2 and 4 are the same damn thing. And yeah the game has preorder bonuses and a season pass. But yeah Evolve is the devil. Smh

With #2 you get 3 monster skins but you don't with #4, unless I read that wrong.

Also, I get the impression that Jason isn't specifically calling out Evolve alone, but moreso using it as an example of what DLC has become. There's certainly many other recent games that you can make a similar list for.

The fact that people are saying it's actually very simple, and that Jason is exaggerating by presenting it this way -- all the while missing one or more possibilities in their own alternative explanation of the available bundles -- only strengthens his point.

It's kind of a damned if you do, damned if you don't scenario then isn't it? If I was getting involved in a multiplayer game I'd want to know there was a lot of content coming down the pipe. All the maps and stuff are free too. Either they announce too much stuff coming out later and now you feel ripped off, or they don't announce anything and the game fades from memory because no one thinks there will be any support.

They could have waited to announce the extra stuff post-season pass, though. Charging up to $120 for stuff so far off is just a bad idea.

based on playing the Alpha and Watching the Beta I was expecting 6.5-7.5 so this is pretty much in line with that. The idea sounds amazing on paper but it doesn't seem like it was executed well enough. I hope it does grow and get better because it has potential, but I fear that it won't have the player base once it gets there.

I'm gonna wait for this to go on sale. It looks good but I just don't see the must buy in it. Matter of fact, I'm gonna watch more streams to make a decision. It looks enjoyable but I'm kind of torn because I don't get the point.

It seems like a lot of people online I know aren't looking forward to this, but most people I know IRL are. I wonder if this will be one of those games the masses love, but the "hardcore" community don't.

Either way I'm getting it and can't wait to play with some Gaffers on XB1.

edit: I know this is all just based off me locally so who knows on the large scale.

Wait so if you preorder the normal version of the game (PS4) you instantly have access to all the hunters and monsters? If so, I've made a huge mistake. I'd at least want to work towards unlocking these things.

If you pre-order it on PS4 over Amazon you get the 2nd tier of hunters instantly. Buying the Xbox One digitally (to make sure 2K gets as much of your money as possible) gets you the 3rd set of hunters right away. As a PS4 owner, another reason to skip on this one.

Or you can do the right thing and select option #10: Don't waste your money on this DLC-riddled mess and spend your $60 on something that respects your time and your dollar, like Bloodborne.

some pretty varied takes on the game

eg

IGN: Fantastic game, full of innovation, lots of depth and maps with loads of mods that change the experience

Gametrailers: Maps all seem same, no story/map progression makes game have no lore and hence uninteresting (compared to L4D which featured story progression through the 4 campaigns being in order eg moving toward a hospital featured later missiom)
