Face-Off: Evolve - PC/PS4/X1

Gotta say they provide nothing in the article to give weight to the rather odd infrastructure comment. Their one time ecperience cat reliably be used to make the conclusion they have.

If they're going to truly analyse that it needs to be properly.

As it stands I know for sure I'll get 1080p on PS4 and 900p on XB1 but I have no confidence they can claim a consistent issue with online.

Pretty suspect and arbitrary element to throw in IMO. And again astonishing how 1080p vs 900p is now a tiny variation in resolution.

I'm reallly finding DF inconsistent and somewhat floundering this gen so far in their articles and wording. They need to sharpen it up and stick to very consistent comparisons: each one it feels they're making a fresh decision on criteria and how they weigh against each other.

I don't look to tech analysis to find them musing that something "seems" different. Either deliver empirical sustainable proof or don't include it IMHO.

Yeah, speculation months back was that it was due to a bug of some sort? But it's been over a year now. AF isn't some trivial little effect with zero meaning. What gives...

I want a clear winner on consoles when I want to buy the best looking version. Maybe others feel different about it but I hate the muddy textures in the distance. It's always in the center of the screen.

To be fair, I suspect it's less of case of them having a bias towards Microsoft and more down to DF desperately trying to find a reason to stay relevant themselves.

The reality is that these sorts of face-off articles are of far less use than they were last-gen. 99% of multiplatform games nowadays are the same story - the PC version will always be the best if you have the hardware for it, the PS4 will be the best console experience and the Xbox One will bring up the rear.

I don't think Digital Foundry are insane Microsoft fanboys or anything. They just need to make it sound like there's actually anything of value to be gained from their articles. Hence all the clutching at straws about 'online experience' or some bollocks, they need the Xbox One to be competitive so they actually have something to say.

I keep looking, but the UK prices for PC's run into £ 700 for something decent, and I need 2 for coop gaming with son, that's £ 1,400. Plus we only game using controllers.

Still, PC is an option instead of 2 x Xb1 in future, the Ps4 performance disappoints, the Xb1 performance here is really crap and WiiU is not worth discussion for such games. Maybe Nintendo will bring out a decent console in 2016.

Come on this is ridiculous.

I never took the supposed XB1 preference thing too seriously but this is too transparent now.

But the PS4 version has Hank! What's the point of Evolve if you don't have Hank?

PS4:
Better performance
1080p
Higher quality ambient occlusion

Xbox One
Better AF

There is a clear winner.

gross. does anyone know if any first-party titles have an AF problem?

It's not first party but I'm playing through Shadow Warrior on my PS4 at the moment and there isn't any problem with AF.

Wouldn't that be influenced by how many people are playing it? And isn't there more people playing it on the PS4?

Unlikely considering the marketing push by Microsoft. They're grossly exaggerating though. It's hasn't taken me more than a 1 minute to find a match, even at 3 am my time.

I'd need to see receipts for an average matchmaking time of 10 minutes.

Makes sense. Explains why each article feels like they're scrambling around for some good points on each option and use wording designed to imply some sort of tougher decision than it clearly is.

TBH I'm always interested in just the analysis hence why it irks me (I'm not actually looking for a comparison as such) but clearly they feel the comparison element is key and "face off" implies some level of competition so I guess they would be concerned at a situation where the results are 99% a foregone conclusion: PC>PS4>XB1.

Ive been having issues with the PC version...cant seem to get it to go above 25-30 FPS on my GTX 760...even on low settings at 720p.

Guess Im waiting for a patch...if that even fixes it.

LOD streaming is a little faster on the PS4 compared to Xbox One, leading to lower quality artwork staying on-screen for longer on Sony's system. Curiously, while this is more pronounced when first loading a match, higher quality assets are also slower to appear during gameplay.
I think they made a mistake.

They really fixed performance in the final game, thats something You have to admire.

Also nice that they included dynamic caustics, people finally realize how awesome tech feature it is in CryEngine :)

Edit: Stop using this image please, I've made a mistake, it's just a difference in lighting conditions,as mentioned in the article and i thought it was a glitch, I already apologized for it.

Edit: Seems like it's just a difference in lighting conditions,as mentioned in the article.

In this comparison the resolution difference between the two consoles is also really noticeable, but oddly enough, not the AF differences.

Here's some online bits

Matchmaking across all formats is improved, with waiting times that usually take between a few seconds to two minutes, while lobby disconnects occur less frequently - though they are not completely eliminated. The Xbox One and PC versions of the game feel the most polished in these areas, with increased stability compared to the PS4 version. For example, matchmaking is a more inconsistent experience on Sony's system, often leaving you waiting between five and 20 minutes when things don't aren't quite working as they should. Rebooting the game usually takes care of the problem, although we noticed that the same problem usually crops up again after a few faultless matches.

Evolve has come a long way since we first played the Big Alpha in autumn last year, and there's a pleasing iterative improvement in all areas since the recent beta. The experience feels more polished, and it is possible to have a few prolonged sessions without any issues. However, underlying kinks remain and we feel that the game still requires another round of bug-fixing and optimisation before it has the consistency and stability that we want from an online-focused multiplayer title. Certainly, the split-second freezing issue - something we didn't see in the previous versions - must be resolved.

"Changing lighting and environmental conditions results in variable light and shadow positions across all three platforms."

my bad, looks strange to me cause it looks exactly the same day time, I was thinking of a glitch more than a different time period..

I'm sorry.

It's a difficult one to call? LOL.

Making a firm recommendation on which to buy is a little challenging: the PS4's 1080p resolution gives it a slightly more refined experience, and performance is a little more stable too. However, this is an online-focused title and the backing infrastructure here doesn't seem quite as robust as it is on Xbox One and PC.

Its eurogamer, like always recently they have been PS4 positives will get less attention but negatives more attention. Anything good on XB1 is better than PS4 positives and even they create backend structure reason without providing any examples how it effects overall.

Hahaha x1 better online experience

OK let me give you back story

Went to gamestop(Islandia, NY) to get for ps4 on Wednesday, PS4 sold out do I decide to get it for my new Xbox 1 which had a ton of copies left.

I'm like 'fine... I'll feed my Xbox, it's new'

This game stutters, there are times were the game hitches so bad hunters and the monster don't appear on the screen (no not active camo) and outside of the main game mode, there is no one playing evac mode, on the off chance there is 1-2 people, they will sometimes get disconnected. Lag is real too.

With that said, it's still a fun game that will tide me over until the order comes out, but I wish I hot it on ps4 instead

IF its true, and not just a singular problem for them, then its a valid criticism in my opinion. Its not about who is to blame necessarily, even though many console warriors will want to make it about that, its just a matter of the software performing like it does for whatever reason. You cant just ignore that when making recommendations.

Alternatively, all the times they are perfectly harsh on negatives of XB1 version or positive about PS4 version's advantages in other recent comparisons seem to have gone completely unnoticed.

It is just them no other review brought it up and I don't think it's been brought up In the ot, it hasn't been an issue at all for me and three friends all on psn since launch.

They are bringing up something no other person has had an issue with flying against better res and better performance you can try and spin that how you want it stinks for me.
