The Order 1886 | Impressions Thread of not shooting the messenger.

Fuck's sake...The more I think about the choices with the story in this game the less I can forgive them.

I wanna grab whoever wrote it by the ears and make them undo a lot of things for the sequel. Like, a lot...
I do think there has been some great potential squandered. With such a focus on a cinematic, filmic experience, certain things story-wise should have been more on point.

Not really. Not what I wrote in the OP.

Just my overall takeaway. It's bothering me. It's been bothering me since yesterday.

I was just replaying/rewatching sections, trying to see if there was anything I missed, anything I didn't fully grasp...

Nope.

Hence why I'm pissed.

Oh well, it happens. This year is stuffed full with amazing games, so it's no point in letting this one bring ya down.

A company being excited for their new game is a huge slap in the face to all the fans that liked their old games.

It just doesn't make any fucking sense why they would do it like that, you know?

Oh, well. Sigh.

Oh? Genuinely curious how you could possibly call bullshit on that.

People don't want spoilers in here so feel free to PM me.

Have you played it or just watched the youtube videos? If the latter, did the guy seem to be rushing through things?
Also literally just spoiler tag. It's why we have that function.

It's not the thread for it but
The last 5 was mixed. While there were a couple short chapters that was cutscenes there was one long one which was pretty much a TPS shooting rump. And the ending doesn't fall to "mostly cutscenes" either.

While I feel this thread is useful for impressions of people who actually played the game, I think in general it's best to wait until the game is released to get a better feel of what the game is about or spoil yourself and see what the pacing is like on YouTube because people here are definitely spreading FUD for whatever reason.

Is this one of those Last of Us ending type moments, which is polarising on a subjective basis, depending on personal opinion and interpretation, or are there any plot holes? If you can't answer in a completely spoiler free manner, that's fine, only a few days left after all, but was curious as to your thoughts.

I thought Wolfenstein: The New Order was proof you can still make AAA SP only shooters that don't need MP.

Excellent gameplay, decent length and an entertaining story. Also some replayability.

Compared to The Order though... I was convinced Wolfenstein would be great the moment I played an early demo at Gamescom 2013. Can't say the same about this game. And despite its praise, Wolfenstein is sitting at a 79 metacritic.

Soooo I don't think it's that far fetched to say The Order 1886 could score lower. Hell, it's my current prediction. Question is: how much lower?

Of course, this is all speculation based on previous builds and the general reception to this game. I liked the PSX demo but a lot of other sites didn't. Would love to be wrong though.

A lot of people refuse to buy used just because of it, no disrespect to Ready at Dawn or any other devs.

I'm taking the best deal possible, don't care how I get it.

Pretty sure he's more referring to how you reached that conclusion with 0 concrete information available.

I'll just shut up... -_-

WTF really? I didn't know that, honestly shocked it's at a 79, not that I think that's a low score, but I wouldn't imagine it being there from my personal experience and what I've read of others.

Lol I was playing man. I can't wait for the game to come out. Reading through all these threads is painful.
Haha good good

And yeah these threads are making me worry about my pre-order. I was already worried about the value of it. I don't think I can justify to myself $60 for 5 hours when I could just redbox it for a night or two for a few bucks.

Wasn't this thread about impressions of gaffers who have played the game? Now it's back to being about youtube footage? What happened, Kev? Might as well have left the previous threads unlocked as it doesn't seem any different now. Just saying…

I just hope Galahad's character isn't too undercooked. He seems to be the central character, as such it'd be nice to get a more nuanced insight in to his character, with at least some depth of emotion.

You're right. I shouldn't have responded but it's hard not call out BS like that when you see it.

One mans trash is another mans treasure.

Sure, I guess one could argue since video games cost a decent amount of money these days they want to get a consensus before they spend their hard earned money on a game, but I have always personally believed there is only one true way to know if you like a game or not. Play it yourself.
If others like or do not like a game, that has no bearing at all on whether I will enjoy it or not.

So is the beef with the story that it is subjectively bad, or is it that the story is dull and/or Destiny-like?

I don't think you will get an objective answer on that without spoilers so its more fitting to ask in the spoiler thread, there is a reason it exists after all.

I don't agree that all a harder difficulty does is force players to memorise locations. It can force you to improve your aim, tactics, use of weapons etc, just as much if not more.

I generally play on harder difficulties. The reason why is that typically the easier difficulties lets/encourages you avoid some of the gameplay. For example, if you can beat the game using a simple attack or weapons found early in a game, then there is no incentive to experiment with different strategies. In my opinion that is a good use of difficulty. The higher strategies encourages more complex gameplay. In this game however it seems like everything would play out exactly the same no matter what difficulty you were on, so the difficulty seems kind of meaningless.

(This is only after the most casual observation of the game, so it is possible that everything could be totally different)

And I don't know why it has do go from not looking at even a single additional item or viewable (as per the videos), to seeing every single one. There can be a balance in-between, which I'd imagine most players will fall in to.

Regarding the bolded, it depends. I don't judge a games purchase viability entirely on the length alone, though it is certainly one of my considerations. Metal Gear Solid is one of my all time favourite games, and I believe it took me around 6-10 hours through my many different play throughs. Not saying The Order will be in the same stratosphere of quality (I'm actually expecting it to be good to very good, not near classic), just making the point that length doesn't necessarily dictate quality, or purchase value proposition. More important than how long a game is, is how much I enjoy it, how fun it is, how likely I may be to replay it etc.

I left it up to the player to judge. If they historically don't go out of their way to discover additional story narrative, then this does not look to be the game for them. As for the game experience itself, that doesn't look to be too good either. It has insta-death stealth sections, and a liberal amount of QTEs and cutscenes. That will put off a lot of people. So it's not even making the case for a 6-10 great gaming experience.

Edit:

I think the point is that if you've seen the footage, then you've basically gotten the gaming experience. That's the problem with having a game so reliant on narrative at the expense of gameplay. Also the length of the game is a legitimate cause for concern.

A shame Wolfenstein scored that low really.

Q-Bert has more story than Destiny, so throw that comparison out.
I won't go into specifics of the story. I haven't finished the game yet, but there are some miscues that don't work that well imo. Nothing deal breaking, at least for me.

Don't know why people are so worried about length. the only thing length affects is price. If you can't justify the price for the length, all you have to do is wait until the price goes down to where you think its worth it and the problem is gone. The game being short doesn't affect the quality of the game assuming its still a complete package.

Kind of surprised there's an option for aim assist to be on or off. If it was me making the game, I'd have left aim assist off permanently, forcing people to just get better at it, but I suppose they wanted to make the game more accessible. I'd imagine it'd be more fun and challenging with aim assist off though.

:)

People who only play through the game once, are you sure you actually like single-player games? Or are you just doing it to keep up with the Joneses?

Personally, I play through my games a few times, at least, over time. Really enjoy coming back to titles I've played previously. On the flip side you couldn't pay me to play an online-only game for 5 minutes, but I've come to accept that. The challenge of single player is very different to multiplayer.

Definitely playing with it off.

My wife brought me down a plate of food, and I've gotten up to piss, but other than that I've been playing. At 10pm I took a break, now I've just played for another 45, and I'll probably call it quits for tonight. I don't know what you want me to say; do you need every game you play to be longer than 10 hours? I don't; I just need it to be enjoyable, and I am enjoying myself. No, it's not the best game ever, or GOTG, but it's a solid game. You guys worry too much about anal stuff.

Dude, you can tell people until your blue in the face about your playtime.. but they will keep ignoring you because its not fun.. but..but youuuTubeee dude!!!! YT always tells the truth.

Oh for sure. Think I'm going to go Hard difficulty as well. Personally I think they should have included another difficulty that was even harder. Something insanely hard that requires even more patience and skill.
Yeah, I'm a little disappointed there isn't one but thats a minor problem for me. It would have been nice to have a "grounded" kind of difficulty.
