Homeworld Remastered |OT| All of this has happened before and will happen again

Bummer, for those wondering I took a look through the games folders and found no trace of any manuals. There goes another chance for a clean rip of the HW2 manual!

Don't worry, my Homeworld 2 archive got you covered. This is a much, much more comprehensive manual and story background than the little shitty one we got back in 2003 thanks to Sierra fucking over Relic back then:

"Proper" Homeworld 2 manuals
1. History of Hiigara
2. Historical & Technical Briefing
3. Gameplay Guide

(all credit goes to Keiichi)

@ Portman: you can put these in the OP if you want.

From a steam broadcast, pretty funny comments going on in that, mostly people were helpful after that point.

Hard game.

Gearbox offering keys for anyone who isn't getting their Collector's Edition today!

Mine isn't coming until next week in Canada and I'll be playing tonight!

I shoulda dipped on the collector's edition. Didn't even know the figure could light up.

Collectors Edition is in stock on Amazon UK, if you still cared. Not sure how much shipping costs would be else where.

It's a shame the conversion rate was worse than normal. I'd have paid the equivalent of $100. £100 rubs me the wrong way though as a student. :I

You need to open a support ticket with them but they responded super quick and after I proved my order with screens and they verify the order number they sent a key.

UK CE orders getting their keys straight from UK Amazon, Canada and US go through Gearbox.

Attach a screen grab of your order to your ticket, and they'll get back to you within a couple of hours.

Considering it's not at all their problem that'd pretty nice if they do something like give away a Steam key.

I've been swamped with work all week but I really want to buy this just based on how well it seems to have turned out and how much I fucking loved HW2 the first time I played it.

My CE came in from Amazon today. Nice ship.

Played the first couple missions, running it at 5K DSR to 4K on a 65inch Curved.
(Love the UI scaling options.)

Looks beautiful. So much nostalgia. Haven't played it since release and never finished the game so much of it is new to me.

Can't wait to play through these. Never played HW2 at all because I didn't have a capable rig back then.

Awesome job by Gearbox so far. Hopefully Relic is pleased as well.

I'm sad that the tutorial in HW1 isn't the same and it got changed to one with HW2 ships and different dialogue.

The tutorial music is also not the original track, which was some amazing ambient ("Tutorial"), and the excellent menu music is also not the same ("The First Steps").

:'(
Huh? I hope the original score is intact, heck I'll say screw the licensed song as long as the score is there!

That is strange that they wouldn't include the manuals. I have the CE but all I did was open it for the code and then I was going to pay bills while it installed. I recall a printed manual but didn't see how extensive it is. You would think if they have one that they would include a digital copy of it too.

I will get these added to the OP. I was thinking I had a digital copy of the 2nd manual but couldn't remember for sure where it came from so these are good to know for people that want to see it.

Played through the first 3 missions of Homeworld 1 remastered and it looks great! I find it odd that you can open but can't close the Build and Launch menus with the keyboard. If that's my only complaint by the time I finish the game I'll be very happy.

Classic games seem untouched. Was just going through the Homeworld 1 classic tutorial and the game crashed when the scouts started attacking. Will try it again tomorrow :p

i've run into a few showstopping bugs and a couple of crashes. remember to save often; it's an old game and it doesn't have an autosave.

also if you're new to the party: salvage corvettes are your best friend.

just finishing up mission 4, really loving the work on the remaster so far.

God damn, I'm glad I saw this as I'm waiting for my copy due to it only being shipped this evening!

Gearbox does this has earned back a lot of respect from me for doing this, it truly feels like it's for the fans.

Aight, so I can load the tutorials, but not the single player campaign. I completed the Homeworld tutorial, which gave me the achievement for completing Homeworld 2 Remastered tutorials. And for some reason there's an achievement for completing Homeworld tutorials in Classic mode.

OK so on the god damn second mission. I can't damage the god damn enemy carrier with just scouts and interceptors. Is there supposed to be a cutscene where i get bombers? Also, i'm out of resources so i just get whittled down by the enemy. Wtf am I doing wrong? I have even finished the original back in the day.

Why we didn't get these in glorious printed form? :_( I got a crappy cd box, with a terrible spanish translation, urgh. Fuck Sierra.

If you are playing Homeworld 1:

I am pretty sure that you aren't supposed to actually hurt it, just keep attack the units it spawns, best bet is actually to just keep your distance. - This is going from memory, as my paycheque doesn't arrive until friday so I can't really play it myself yet :(

You are getting ahead of yourself. Also build corvettes and capture some if you can with the salvage corvettes.

Hahaha, you're thinking of HW2 where you disable and destroy the carrier. In HW1 you just defend the mothership.

VVV You got me, Lautaro, misquote!

Apparently you have to download the DLC to play single player, other 2 GB.

Ah, no wonder I kept having trouble getting to the carrier in the first mission. Forgot you couldn't kill them in the first game. Silly because the dialogue even says something like "Goo find the massive power source"

I never played Homeworld 1 or 2. Although I love strategy games, especially space themed ones. Sins, Alpha Centauri, Endless Space. All good stuff.

Wondering if I should pick this up. Is it similar in play to Sins? It kind of seems like it from the screenshots and videos, but it's hard to tell a strategy game's gameplay from videos.

Also, I know the multiplayer is in beta after reading OP, but is it functional at this point? I'd like to ideally play some comp stomp at least locally with friends.

This is an RTS, not a 4X. If you're looking for a 4X game this ain't it, but it's one of the greatest RTS games ever.

I like both, but I skew to RTS. I just mentioned other space strategy games I like, most happen to be 4X. Sins is...kind of both. That's why I'm wondering if the scale is similar or is it more focused?

The packaging for the Collectors Edition is incredible. I love that I could get to my game code and everything without having to "open" or tear anything apart. I left the ship in the foam for the time being.

I have a 1 hour download to wait through. Go Go Go Go

it's like, the greatest sci-fi videogame ever made

Focused. The tech tree is fast, with combat prioritized over resource management. Most games will go 30-45 minutes.

Edit: Also the above, it's the best sci-fi video game and HW2 was the basis for many mods for BSG, Star Trek, Star Wars, Babylon 5, etc.

My CE was delivered to the wrong address by Amazon's own carrier(AMZN_US), gave me quite the scare when I hadn't received the package despite it showing delivered on Amazon's site. When I went to check my neighbor's porch sure enough it was there. I'm still angry though and I complained to Amazon and I'm getting a refund, so yay on me getting the CE for free.

Amazon emailed me this morning saying my CE had been shipped. Woke up in the evening to an email saying that due to distribution issues it was going to be shipped on the 27th.

I bought Sins b/c it was the first thing that looked even remotely like Homeworld in a very long time, and while a good game, it's not terribly similar aside from being a space RTS. It just plays out very differently. Homeworld isn't an empire building game like the ones you listed. There's no colonizing or building out wide reaching infrastructure. It's bit more like building a base in a traditional RTS like StarCraft (though that's about where the similarities end). It's still so hard to quantify, because there's still so little like it.

The main thing in Homeworld is the 3D nature of the combat. It's brilliant, and I haven't seen anything else like it (the closest might've been in the ancient Star Wars Rebellion game). The other thing about Homeworld is the fantastic campaign. Not often do I see such compelling stories told via RTS games. And the campaign has 100% carryover from mission to mission. While that does mean you can get sort of screwed by fairing particularly poorly on a mission, it also means that there's always something at stake.

This can't be true.

It's not.... but the available windowed resolutions are apparently restricted so that they're always below your monitor's native resolution.

I guess this is done to prevent people who don't know better from choosing a windowed resolution that's too big to fit on their screen. Unfortunately, this makes borderless windowed mode impossible. I can't find a way to bypass the restriction with config files or anything.

I submitted a ticket to Gearbox. Here's hoping they take a look.

Classic Homeworld 1 wasn't working out of the box, at least for me.
Laggy mouse and messed up resolution.

Some fixes that get it working in widescreen mode:

Fixing mouse lag:
1. Navigate to Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\Homeworld\Homeworld1Classic\exe
2. Right click Homeworld.exe
3. Click the Compatibility tab
4. Set compatibility mode on Windows 98
5. Launch game directly

Fixing the resolution and bit depth for widescreen:
1. Open Regedit.exe
2. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Sierra On-Line\Homeworld
3. Edit screenWidth and screenHeight to your desired resolution (edit them in Decimal format)
4. Edit screenDepth to 32 (once again, Decimal format)
Launch the game.

Unfortunately this seems to break Classic's ability to launch from the launcher application, but it works fine launched directly.
