[RUMOUR] PS4 beta firmware 2.50 brings external HDD support

So there is a possibility that PS4 owners will finally be able to add storage to their console?

That is awesome! Best 8th gen feature to date.

They could from day one. The drive is user replacable, just pop in any 3TB drive you want.

Because I don't want to have people get their hopes up and then get mad later:

This is for back up. It's not for playing off the hard drive. It's most useful for if you change your hard drive, you no longer have to redownload everything.

Also external HDs have always worked for for things like keeping save files and after the usb player was added; worked for playing music from.

So I can move my 50gb digital games to a hard drive to free up space then copy them back if I want to play them?

Or is this just making a copy of what's on my current hard drive incase of a failure so I can restore?

I added 1.5 terrabytes of storage to my ps4 six months ago when I upgraded to a 2 tb harddrive. But please continue to misrepresent the situation if you like.

I see as easy way to upgrade your internal ps4 HD for a bigger one.

default 500G -> backup it -> change internal HD for a bigger one -> restore via backup.

Yes, that's what it is meant for. Especially great for those people who like to get digital games but have a weak/limited connection and don't want to re-download everything again.

This. Id be ok with that. Youd still have to transfer stuff over but would probably be a ton faster than redownloading. Id be ok with this as a start.

Why are people happy for something so stupid (IMO) like auto sync trophies when you can't even see them offline?, i prefer that instead.

It's quite amazing how most of the features are in the Vita and PS3.

Why shouldn't people be excited about improvements? Not everyone is a cynic.

I hope applications can be backed up and restored individually, otherwise it would be less useful for me. From the single page, we can't tell. Maybe on another page we are greeted with an app selection list..

While it's not true external hard drive support, as far as I'm concerned it's close enough. Especially considering I use Steam's backup function to put large games on my external hard drive in a similar manner, and then uninstall and restore from backup as hard drive space demands. Plus I put literally everything from my Vita in the same hard drive, and then uninstall and restore as required.

And then I get Crashplan to make an offsite backup.

i suppose for those that only have like two or three games in their system this isnt a big deal but holy shit this is a god send

now i dont have to copy 1 by 1 all my saves because i want to change my hard drive and the PS+ storage was already filled after 6-8 months of ownership

A hearty lol at thuway being salty about not getting credit. Can it man, or credit the person who leaked those details to you :p

Backups sound good. I'd prefer running off the external too, but a full backup makes the process of replacement even easier, really. Move everything over, pop out the drive, done.

By back-up only does that mean I can store downloaded games on it and just move them to the internal drive whenever I want to play? That would be good enough for me, better than redownloading.

It would be fantastic if I could store Vita games on there too and move games to the Vita through the PS4 UI.

I hope so, really would rather just plug in an external than having to re-download all my games after updating the internal hdd.

This will be useful for when I have to send my PS4 in for repairs. Last time I sent it in I had to wipe everything and redownload when I got it back. That wasn't too bad, but now I have a lot more games and that will totally kill my bandwidth to get everything back. I really hope they can stop it from getting so damn loud this time, they didn't actually do anything to fix that last time. I have to remember to send in my two peeled controllers as well :/

Anyway, nice to see more useful features being added. It might be taking an obscene amount of time, but at least they're still working at it.

Actually that doesn't look like external HDD support, not in the way it's meant on Xbox One, at least. Looks like it's just for backup/restore of game installs and data.

Edit: aaaaaand beaten.

This is more than enough for me.

As a person living in a country with horrible internet, it would be an absolute nightmare for me to redownload my games again.

And could we also have .png support for screens instead of the lossy jpgs?
Or how about trophies that could be viewed reverse chronologically (earned)?
And what about being able to turn off DS4 from the primary menu (akin to PS3)?

To your second point:

[Earned Date], [Not Earned], and [Grade] have been added as sorting options for trophies. You can also sort by [Earned Date] and [Not Earned] options when comparing trophies with other players.

Obviously the screen capture shows a backup utility, and not playing games or media off the HDD...

But it is still external HDD support of some kind, and its a feature I would expect to be included along with playing games from an external source as well. Regardless, even if just a back up utility its at least a step in the right direction and a welcomed addition to what's shaping up to be a hefty update

This is not how it works. You can only copy the entire harddrive, with or without ALL your applications. You can't select a game to back-up or individually choose a game to restore. In addition, if you want to perform a restore, you can't add to the existing data on the drive, you overwrite the entire drive with your back-up.

Seriously? Booooo

Seriously? Booooo

Its a usual backup procedure.

And unless something has changed it seems to be the same feature they advertised for FW2.0 before quickly pulling it

Also it might be best to change the title since it looks to be not be the feature people are expecting after reading the title.

Saw thread title, got excited. Now seeing its probably just a backup mechanism. Lame if that's all it truly is.

Awful.
