Nvidia Shield Thread

I really wish they would release a 10" shield tablet. Even though I finally sorted out my connections so I could use the streaming to my projector in console mode without the hitches.

My micro-HDMI to HDMI cable arrived yesterday so I tried Metal Gear Rising with the streaming tech at 1080p using 802.11ac

awesome performance, the shield really is a cool portable.

curious how is the streaming quality?(assuming a good connection)

I can't find much info out there on quality of the actual streaming quality blown up on a big TV? I want to stream to a 65" TV. My concern is the compression.

Does it look like Youtube, or is it indistinguishable from a console?

Somewhere in between, but closer to the console. The stream quality is good, but not perfect.

To remote play PS4 on the Shield Portable this is what I did:

1. Update Shield Portable to Android 4.4.2
2. Install the Playstation App from the Google Play store
3. Download the beta 4 version on the remote play fix from this thread
4. Run that APK file from your downloads to install it
5. Open the new Remote Play app
6. Skip any controller pairing and click next to start it looking for the PS4
7. Sign in once to your PSN account then skip the search
8. Pair the device with your PS4 by going to the add device under remote play settings on the PS4 (ensure the connect directly is turned off while your at those menus)
9. Enter the number on the Shield and it should connect
10. IMPORTANT: Hold start until the controller mapping comes up. Remove any button mappings
11. FOR FULL 720p RESOLUTION: Before connecting to the PS4, hit the settings dots in the upper right. Change the video quality to high. This will only work if you have a very strong connection. It works great for me when I'm only a couple feet from my 5ghz wireless router. Any walls in between and the connection breaks up.

And that's all! You don't need to be rooted, just go through the steps and it should work with full controller support. Even R3 and L3 work as they should with games like CoD or Battlefield. To use the PS button touch the screen and hit the little bars at the bottom.

Followed your instructions and it works flawlessly. Easier than i thought. Thanks.

I don't know of this is the place to say it but I love the shield streaming technology. I have a raspberry pi and limelight and being able to stream games/emulators/media to my tv from my gaming rig with 1ms lag is amazing. I've enabled remote desktop settings in geforce experience and it's like my computer is hooked right to my tv. It blows my mind everytime.

Hey could you please share some configuration resources? I have 2 raspberry pi's that I would love to re-purpose for this type of functionality.

Thanks!

Ok, I finally figured out ps4 remote play and it works flawlessly. Really makes my Vita obsolete from this standpoint. I've also been dabbling in a little in PS2 and Dolphin emulation, and it streams so nicely to the portable. Xenoblade and FFXII from my bed. Outstanding! Greatest handheld ever.

After trying shield portable for Remote Play for a week i decided to use it wired as 720p is so much better than the standard quality. Pairing it with a Powerlink adapter in any room of my house is great.
Keep in mind that many usb-ethernet adapters do not work with the shield though. Tried 3 different models until i found out "Plugable" brand works.

In my opinion, if you have a good router with a good connection, it can look very close to native. I normally stream to my 55in TV and it looks pretty much just as good as if I were to hook up my PC to the TV.

Anyone that's tried to buy a Shield Portable lately knows they're difficult to track down, and Nvidia is sold out.

Then I saw this blog propaganda piece today:

http://blogs.nvidia.com/blog/2015/02/23/nvidia-shield-submarine/

One would hope that this will dispel any rumors that Nvidia is going to stop producing the device, at least.

Why the hell are they so hard to find these days? I've been looking for over 2 weeks now. Definitely not going to pay the extortion prices.

It's really frustrating. I had one held at GameStop for $140 a while back but the sale ended before I could pick it up, so they wanted $199. Unfortunately I was at the impulse buy stage then, so I passed. Now they're low $200's on Ebay if you are keeping a close eye.

Definitely don't pay $400+. I think most of those are shill bidders with 3-5 of them in hand so they're trying to make it look like they're selling for that price. I'm really hoping the mild speculation that a new one is coming is true.

I tried to use a Samsung Galaxy Tab S 8.4 for gaming, but it struggles, so I've just arranged to buy an LTE SHIELD Tablet with controller in brand new condition for £290 on Gumtree.

The guy is bringing it on Sunday.

I'm very excited.

Are there any glaring android games that aren't supported?

So I'm sure this has been asked a lot recently, but is the shield tablet still the best tablet for PC streaming with Steam or should I go with a different Android tablet and Limelight? Budget isn't too much of a concern.

Limelight doesn't have shit on Gamestream tbh, if you had no other option it's serviceable but the real deal is nearly flawless.

i'm glad i have a shield portable. they dont seem to be selling them anymore and prices on ebay have gone up.
Me too, I liked out when they were $60 off after Christmas at Gamestop.

Had to wait in a 45min line at the mall since it was a day or two after Christmas (so many people trading in consoles!), but I managed to get one for $140.

You can still find a few at FRY's but they're becoming rare too. I love mine. I have the mini HDMI cable and an extra controller so I use it as a console sometimes as well.

Is there anyone who gamestreams that is having trouble launching games through Steam big picture? I'm having this weird issue where I have no problems launching Steam through Gamestream but when I launch a game (Ori and the Blind Forest, for example), the screen briefly changes like it's going to launch, but then goes right back to the launch screen. It's bizarre.

Gamestream otherwise works perfectly. Games launched through GFE load without problems. Thanks for your replies.

Anyone know if the remote play app has been "tweaked" for 2.50 firmware on the PS4? Unsurprisingly, the Shield won't connect to the PS4 anymore. :(

The mod I've been using in Thread 1 below no one has less updates but worked perfectly with the nVidia Shield. Thread 2 below is actively developed it looks like and I have never tested its functionality with a Shield. If you browse the thread though it looks like it should work. Maybe an update will be coming soon. If not then this is REALLY disappointing and I might end up buying an Xperia Tablet and strap on a controller.

Thread 2

A new version of the Remote Play App without the Xperia checks has been posted here. It works on the Shield Portable, but you need to use button mapping. I think they are looking to release a version with native button support. Good to know that remote play on the Shield Portable is still possible after the update.

I have to add that I am very surprised about how the new Shield works. I want to have it at home (and I have an Ouya and an Amazon Fire Tv, appart from the first Shield xD)

Couldn't find a topic about this yet, but it looks like Nvidia has an Nvidia Shield Portable v2 in the works:

WiFi certification site: https://www.wi-fi.org/product-finder-results?subcategories=11
Bluetooth certification site: https://www.bluetooth.org/tpg/QLI_viewQDL.cfm?qid=22779

It is being listed as "NVIDIA Shield Portable P2523"

From the looks of it, it will have Bluetooth 4.1, 802.11a/b/g/n/ac dual-band 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz WiFi, Android 5.0, and will have the Nvidia Tegra X1 processor.

If you were thinking about buying the original model at a jacked up price, might want to hold off until this is confirmed.

Will an X1 be enough potentially for playable Dolphin or Yabause?

wow didn't know there was a shield thread on gaf o:

I've had my shield tablet for about a month now mainly using it for just browsing internet and some mobile games.
I have a few questions since I got this tablet as a gift and gave my nexus 7 to my sister.

1. Is there a simple guide to get root on the tablet? I've searched up xda and kept finding threads redirecting to other threads just making it all really confusing for me. I just want root to get ad-away(adblocker) and plan to stick to stock rom.

2.Will a gtx 750 ti work for the game streaming from pc to the shield tablet? I haven't messed around with the streaming at all yet so I don't know anything about it ><

3.Also, will a dualshock 4 pair up with the shield tablet? I have an extra I'd rather use on the shield tablet instead of buying the separate controller specifically for the shield tablet and hopefully use it for ps4 remote play.

Guess what: If you get a new Shield, get ready to make an Nvidia account!
Nvidia's GameStream tech lets GeForce owners stream PC games to Shield devices. The pairing process is a bit involved, though. Users have to enter a PIN on the PC for each Shield device they want to use, and they need to configure port forwarding on their router to stream games from remote networks. Today, Nvidia updated its GeForce Experience and Shield Hub applications to smooth out the GameStream setup process.

The new pairing process requires that Shield owners use the same Nvidia account to log into the GeForce Experience app on their PCs and the Shield Hub Android app on their Shield devices. Once that's done, Shield Hub should display a list of GameStream-compatible games without any further configuration. Nvidia says Remote GameStream should now work without port forwarding, too.

To take advantage of the simpler setup process, one needs only to update the GeForce Experience app for the PC and the Shield Hub app for Shield devices. Folks who don't have an Nvidia account already will have to sign up for one, as well.

So I have a Shield Portable, but I do not have a Nvidia graphics card and hence cannot Gamestream. I've tried Kainy and the like but the quality is pretty spotty, at best.

I currently have a 7970 Sapphire... For those that know a lot about graphics cards (I admittedly do not) what is a good Nvidia equivalent? Or something slightly better than the 7970?

Curious, why would you buy an equivalent and not an upgrade? The common equivalent on Nvidias side is the 770, in reality though if your gonna be replacing your GPU might as well go for the 900 series (970/980)

Fair question... Honestly, I've been able to run almost everything at full resolution without any noticeable performance issues. But truthfully, I'm not trying to max out all of other settings.

I'm certainly not against upgrading the graphics card, per se, as long as the cost isn't too crazy.
