Kojima was 'fired' by Konami, says Metal Gear Solid voice actress

Konami : Hmm, we have this guy who keeps our entire business relevant and alive, but he want's his name on all his work, and his own team. How can we claim the brand he no longer want's to make? We must remove the names and the studio. All will be Konami.

Kojima : No, this is my life work. I said no more three games ago.

Konami : You will accept this and go make Konami's Silent Hill. Then you will continue to make more Konami Metal Gear games.

Kojima : No.

Konami : You fired.

Maybe?

This is terrible. Shame on Konami for the way they've handled his dismissal.

Hope Sony approaches Kojima and sets him up with his own studio. They're always open to crazy experiential game ideas and have a good history that dates back to the 90s. Feels right.

We knew that, more or less. The other day I was wondering if it has anything to do with the budget of MGSV. You know, actors, new multiplatform engine, mocap tech, new studio in LA, heavy marketing, merchandise everywhere.. it must be pretty high.

I hope this makes people give up on the "it's all a ruse, Kojima and Konami are trolling!1!1!" idea.

Feeling sad for MGS, but happy for Kojima.

The question will be will he take one? Or make his own studio? Or take an early retirement?
Hope not. The man has been quoted saying he will make videogames until he dies, I hope this whole mess hasn't soured his perspective to that degree. I want Kojima and his people to do whatever they want, he is my favorite game designer of all time. :(

Fuck you too Konami.

Maybe the Konami brass hate the fulton recovery stuff as much as I do and it returning in MGS5 was the last straw?

Seriously, though, this does kinda sound like someone being loose with words as much as anything. You could make the argument that Kojima has been constructively fired, but we don't know what the actual contract and employment situation he had was or how it has changed, and I doubt she knows precisely either.

A damn shame after all these years!

I'll be keeping my Collectors edition though and supporting him wherever he goes; can't wait till E3 2016 to find out what he's working on next!

RIP "METAL GEAR!?.... IT CANT BE!"

I do wonder whether Boyes has had a chat with him. Given that MGS5 is being marketed by Sony and they'll be appearing together at promo events...

Would be silly of Sony to pass up on the opportunity if it arose.

Why are people taking sides with Kojima so easily? Sure, the one is a real person with an artistic vision (etc) and the other one is a big, evil company which only cares for money. I just don't think they would fire their winning horse for no good reason.
As much as I like Kojima and his games, theres gotta be some crap coming from his side too.

He's been saying he wanted to stop making MGS for years, but as long as he works for Konami I don't think that would be possible.

Burning the bridge might have been the only way to really move on.

He'll come out with his own development studio and sign a publishing agreement with EA, Activision, or perhaps even Sony. Does he retain the rights to "Kojima Productions"? I doubt he can keep the logo, though, since it's the FOXHOUND logo from MGS, iirc.

Goodbye sweet prince.

He can't keep the ips but he sure can make similar games. Expecting awesome ZoE ripoff soon.

Maybe Kojima was serious about MGSV being his last and refused to budge on that, which prompted Konami execs to fire him for "not playing ball" (and, I imagine, being an expensive employee to hang on to).

I hope Konami goes out of business because that opens the possibility of another company grabbing their IPs and actually making games out of them.

It's more likely he refused to make annother metal gear game considering job positions went up for "the next metal gear" game shortly after the initial announcement of kojima leaving.

Damn, either Kojima did something really, really bad or Konami is run by idiots.

Based on their other titles I'm willing to bet it's the latter.

I'd assume its similar to the Ueda situation with TLG, but MGSV is actually coming out.

Konami fired a genius who created one if their most successful franchises ever and was in the process of reviving another one. Well done.

The retarded part is how disrespectfully they went about it.

I seriously doubt anyone would boycott if they didn't do something as dumb as removing him from the box art.

Why does there have to be crap coming from Kojima? This could easily be Konami just not wanting to be in the AAA console space anymore.

Weren't there rumours that there was some failed company coup that he was a part of?

I may be talking out of my finely chiselled sphincter.

Oh, and of course, this is required:

Kojima just shot himself in the foot.

I don't know how much the rest of you know about Japanese culture (I'm an expert), but honor and shame are huge parts of it. It's not like it is in America where you can become successful by being an asshole. If you screw someone over in Japan, you bring shame to yourself, and the only way to get rid of that shame is repentance.

What this means is the japanese public, after hearing about this, is not going to want to purchase MGS5 for either system, nor will they purchase any of Kojima's games. This is HUGE. You can laugh all you want, but Kojima has alienated an entire market with this move.

Kojima, publicly apologize and return to work for Konami or you can kiss your business goodbye.

personally I can see Konami pulling out of the games industry in the long run and just stick with their other businesses, maybe they will sell IP, or license it out at that point

I understand the love for the man and why people are automatically anti-corp / pro-Kojima, but now we're actually seeing the word "fired" part of me wonders what the hell happened - and whether there were legitimate reasons for firing him -- it'll be interesting once it all comes out

Last game from Konami I will purchase. Have fun with your gyms and Yugioh-card games while your legacy as a video game company diminishes into obscurity!
