Kojima was 'fired' by Konami, says Metal Gear Solid voice actress

We will never actually know what really went down in Konami I guess, but boy they seem to have been sucking for a while now.

Now that there is nothing that can be done to save Konami in my eyes (unless Suikoden reemerges or Silent Hills is made by a quality team) I'd love a investigative article on this. Like many have said, come on Geoff we know what you can do when you actually have a great story to tell.

Probably the best thing that could have happened to him. He'll get a new team and do what he does best, end off.

Why does there have to be crap coming from Kojima? This could easily be Konami just not wanting to be in the AAA console space anymore.

I'd accept that if it weren't for the pettiness of Konami going back and trying to remove all traces of Kojima from their websites. It seems like it got personal.

Why?

Right now it looks like a dumb move on Konami's part but I am curious to know why they did it. Maybe there is a legitimate reason.

We may never know.

Konami : Hmm, we have this guy who keeps our entire business relevant and alive, but he want's his name on all his work, and his own team. How can we claim the brand he no longer want's to make? We must remove the names and the studio. All will be Konami.

Kojima : No, this is my life work. I said no more three games ago.

Konami : You will accept this and go make Konami's Silent Hill. Then you will continue to make more Konami Metal Gear games.

Kojima : No.

Konami : You fired.

Maybe?

I think there is some truth to this. Konami clearly wants to make more Metal Gear games but Kojima was done with the series a long time ago, and it feels like he has only been working on new games in the franchise out of obligation. I could kind of see them having a large spat over this which either led to Kojima getting fired or him walking.

I'm sure Sony will roll out the red carpet for this man.

If anything, this seems like it would would push him to be more independent.

Microsoft or Sony would be just like another Konami, both would roll out the red carpet, but they'd still want a ROI in a timely matter,

Look for me on the local news, I'll be the guy arrested for trying to burn down a Nintendo exec's house.
Kicking all this shit off to negatively affect the game a half year before release is the stupidest move a corporation could have ever made.

Even worse when they could have still made that June date and then had this whole blow up afterwards. Now watch how half year of negative press is going to put a dampener on what should have been a big "best MGS evah" run up.

We pretty much knew this considering all the removal of name etc but would love to know.the reason.

I think he would be great at square, or better with his own studio.

I'm predicting an E3 announcement about where he ends up.

Will we know the truth any time soon? And I mean 2016 because Konami definitely won't want any bad press (more than what's already out there) during MGS V's year of release.

Hideo Kojima, exclusively on....

So we're taking this as the gospel truth that Kojima didn't step down, perhaps due to his studio being annexed?

Kojima is to Konami as Big Boss is to the Patriots. They'd clone him before they'd ask him to leave.

He has to go to a big company if he wants to continue working at the scale he's used to, there's no way he can fund something like that on his own.

I wouldn't cancel a preorder for Kojima's last Konami game, but I would definitely never preorder another Konami game. Fuck annualization.

Yup.

This is definitely my last Konami game for a damn long while.

Apart from Metal Gear that's all I was interested in from them.

The new Silent Hills game looked promising as a first SH game for me, but with Kojima-san no longer at the helm, I'm out.

But they should've think about firing him beforehand. It's either they have underestimated Kojima's impact and position or that the situations just went out of control.

I understand the love for the man and why people are automatically anti-corp / pro-Kojima, but now we're actually seeing the word "fired" part of me wonders what the hell happened - and whether there were legitimate reasons for firing him -- it'll be interesting once it all comes out
It would be pretty stupid to go through all these silent and scorched earth routines if they had a reason they thought the public would buy. Unless Kojima's done something they think will harm sales of the game even more than the public hating the company's guts will.

Will wait for details, if they ever come, before judging Konami. There must be a good reason behind them severing ties with Kojima. Things were afterall looking pretty good for both parties before this news broke. MGSV coming out later this year and the type of hype for a Silent Hill game that was perhaps the biggest the series had ever seen.

I'm hoping Kojima goes indie like Inafune and doesn't disappear like Itagaki or IGA.

It would be super interesting to see what he could do with a small team and real limitations.

He has to go to a big company if he wants to continue working at the scale he's used to, there's no way he can fund something like that on his own.

That's under the assumption he still wants to make these large AAA budget games at this point in his life, and if he does he wouldn't have to fund it on his own.

No company is going to throw that kind of money without having a say in what is created and how long it should take to create said thing.

Words that kill...

Not sure if it's been mentioned, but Donna Burke is the iDroid voice and is more well known for singing Heaven's Divide and Words that Kill.

Sony seems like the best bet. I mean, they gave a big budget to Ready at dawn(right?) imagine what they would do for him.

Maybe Kojima made a game so perfect there's no point in anyone making more games. Konami tried to stop it, he refused to change it.

There will be no need for any games after 1st September 2015.

Thank you, Kojima.

Was going to buy metal gear day one , but konami and its bullying completely changed it to a buy used or cheap.

None of that money will go to the people that deserve it so why not hit em where it hurts, don't preorder, don't buy day one, buy it a week or 2 later and send them a message.

Is this going to be another thread where people say Konami is doomed even though they make money from a ton of other shit?

It's really interesting though whatever went down between the two. Hopefully someone can dig up what it was, would make for a great read

Like what?

Konami has a rather extensive casino business. Well a considerable amount of Slot machines I see at Parx (A Casino in Philadelphia), are made by Konami. In fact there is a giant machine near the entrance called the Titan 360 with huge Pinball like metallic balls that go into these Skeeball like holes which has always has a large crowd surrounding it. Yes, it's a Konami machine too.

Considering their gambling side of the company, even if Kojima leaves, Konami isn't going anywhere in the immediate future.

There still is Silent Hills up in the air too, and also consider Igarashi's departure a few months ago. If Kojima is indeed fired, that means no solid lead for either the Castlevania or Metal Gear franchises.

What remains? PES Soccer? the few DDR Arcade Machines, beyond Konami's extensive gambling business.

I REALLY, REALLY HATE TO SAY THIS, but Konami could close it's console gaming division entirely and STILL survive based on the revenue it's gambling side pulls in.

I don't want Konami to fail out of the console gaming. I love Castlevania, Suikoden, and Metal Gear.

It would be terrible to not ever again play another installment of these franchises, but at the rate things are going it could very well be a possibility in the next 5 to 6 years if things continue as is.

Making large AAA budget games is definitely his thing (and very much what he is known for), I can't see him making a small indie title at all.

Sony seems like the best bet. I mean, they gave a big budget to Ready at dawn(right?) imagine what they would do for him.

Indeed.

As was pointed out, it would also be pretty stupid to fire him for no good reason at this point. I don't know if/why he got fired and I certainly won't speculate or blame anyone.
All this speculation leads nowhere, we don't really know much.
