Rodea the Sky Soldier |Import OT| Tenkuu no Kishi Rodea: NiGHTS & Punishment

I'm definitely getting the Wii U version, but I'm on the fence about also getting the 3DS one. What are the differences between the two? Is it worth it to have both? Or is the 3DS version just a portable version of the Wii U one with the same level designs, controls, etc.?

The Wii version was down-ported to the 3DS, said 3DS version was up-ported to the Wii U.

finished the first two chapters and i'm in love. honestly, the controls are brilliant. they clicked almost immediately for me and feel totally natural. running around with the dpad is a bit awkward but if you're playing correctly you should almost never be touching the ground anyway. slingshotting rodea around has that perfect feeling of control and fluidity that sonic and nights had, it's great.

so far the game dipped to 30fps quite a bit in the prologue but for the first 3 chapters it's been very smooth overall.

Can you snap the back cover please? :) We haven't had a chance to see that IIRC.

the soundtrack is really damn good.

i'm at chapter 14 right now. its a pretty easy game so far, but things can still get dicey in a hurry when you're powered down, unable to attack and can't fly for more than a few meters at a time.

anyone know how many chapters there are?

edit: the third boss was really cool. i wonder how it would play out with the limited flight mechanics in the wii u/3ds version

25 chapters.

Those bad sales really are synonymous with our times it seems... With everyone focused on mobile games etc. nobody gives a shit about old school games like this on a "dead" platform anymore :(

Will buy this day one in EU even if it won't make a difference at all :(

If they didn't want their game to flop they probably shouldn't have dumped it on the shelves after four years of complete silence, but what do I know, I'm just some dude.

they had done some promotion in japan and were making video content for months since november, and even managed to have iwata talk about it in a nintendo direct. it's not like they just stealth released it like koei tecmo does with vita games.

there's a massive smoking crater where this game landed.

it will pretty much do better in the west by default. no wonder this thread is so empty.

All the importers jumped ship when the localization got announced. I know because I was one of them :)

The 3DS version seems to be a lot smoother in this video, which is played on a New 3DS. I guess they did take advantage of the New 3DS hardware to improve the framerate?

I think they'd have advertised this if that was the case.

You'd think so, but the New 3DS video definitely shows it running at 30 fps (I even played it back in VLC in slow motion to confirm), and it was definitely 20 fps max when I played the demo on my old 3DS, as well as in other videos of the game such as this one.

or maybe it could be the demo ran at a lower framerate while the full game ran smoothly?

Is there a hard mode/9.0 intensity?

What was the advertising like in Japan? Were there any tv ads or ads on websites?

If I remember correctly the 3DS version of E.X. Troopers sold better then the ps3 version, so the opposite occurred here which is kinda interesting.

There's a scan of a famitsu ad in the OP, for example.

last boss is not really that hard, but it's quite long with no checkpoints, so if you get caught in the wrong spot, you're screwed with almost no chance to recover. there really needs to be a way to cancel a route mid-flight without having to target something else. when you're flying straight towards death and there are no other visible landmarks to target it's pretty frustrating. it hasn't really been an issue until now though.

edit: and then you die on the very last phase and have to do it allll over again. think sonic adventure's final boss, but with an entire level you have to replay each time you die

edit2: and done

the wii u and 3ds version lets you cancel out of flight and slam into the ground. it's really quite beneficial.

that ion service on the results screen

edit:
FPS MODE

what? there's a mode that unlocks after beating it??

:O

btw is there any replay incentive besides S-ranks?

if by incentive you mean tons of extra modes and stuff, not really. no idea if anything unlocks with better scores/more medals though.

i've never seen higher than a b-grade for time, it's pretty damned strict. seems like you either have to shoot for score/medals or time, it seems impossible to s-rank both.

Wii U sells the most but still sells like shit.

What does that tell 3rd-parties I wonder?

"GAMES CAN'T BE SUCCESSFUL ON WII U!!!"

"But sir, it sold more than the 3DS version"

"GAMES CAN'T BE SUCCESSFUL ON 3DS!!!"

"Are you feeling alright sir?"

"YES, WHY DO YOU ASK?!"

I dunno. :p

All it tells us is that Kadokawa are new to this industry and have yet to get it right when it comes to publishing an original IP.

last week a couple articles popped up about rodea not having multiplayer on the 3ds and wii u, yet having it on the wii. i thought it was weird that it was being reported on, since the news 'broke' with the press release nisa sent out in march when they announced the wii version would be packaged with the wii u version. when i checked the source, it was my post in this thread.

you're doing a bang-up job, mitch

yup, all of the recent news about the game basically come from this thread and thus mostly your impressions. :D

saw that article and immediately knew they got this from your comments.

it feels like just the handful of people in this dead thread and a few twitch streamers are the only ones on the internet who actually bought the game and are discussing it :p

i like to believe that if they pushed the wii version more in the marketing and previews it might have gotten a bit more attention, even it that doesn't make any sense from a business perspective. i think the market that's actually interested in a game like this would be much more receptive to it.

i think the market that's interested in this game is being pretty unfair to the 3ds/wii u version of it to be honest. they shouldn't have to love it, but i don't think it's outright nferior or bad.

Gave me a black screen at first, but I eventually figured out that you had to change the language setting in the loader to Japanese to get it to run. This is gonna be great!

Well to be fair, I don't have any way of actually playing the Japanese Wii U version at the moment. I hear that Wii U hacking could be a thing soon (hackers apparently have kernel access), so if a region free loader comes out for Wii U I'll give it a shot.
