Sequels that will never happen for games that ended on cliffhangers

Darksiders 1.
That ending.

How could you NOT follow it up in DS2? Seriously one of the most boneheaded decisions ive ever seen in videogames

Beyond Good and Evil.

I know a sequel is supposed to be in the works, but how long has it been since it was mentioned?

Ubisoft refuses to acknowledge it even exists, at a press event they said they didn't know what they were talking about when asked about it.

Megaman Legends (and to a lesser extent, ZXAdvent) make me sad.

Metroid Fusion

The ending completely turns the series on its head...and Nintendo have no idea how to take it forward.
Nearly 15 years later and we've had 5 games take place be before the events of Fusion instead of going forward..

This happens too often in games. It's so weird. Castlevania has that whole 1999 story line that they avoid (IIRC), then we have Devil May Cry opting to stay pre-DMC2 in everything.

But they are not sequels. Breath of Fire V was set in an alternate timeline and it has nothing to do with the story of the previous 4 games.

EDIT: Xenogears is another great example.

Yet somehow the story in BoF 4 ties into the previous 3? Outside of the ever expanding desert at the end of 3 (considering most of the world in 4 is a desert), 4 has about as much to do with the others as 5 does. Unless you're trying to say that because 5 doesn't share the same races as 1-4 do, it means it's not connected. Because if sharing the same races is all it takes to make something a sequel, then every Final Fantasy game is a sequel to the previous ones.

It's been stated by Capcom that Dragon Quarter is the only one in the series that takes place in a separate reality... Besides, IV is the only one that ends with a massive cliffhanger.

They were going to, but found that the tech was not there to support 4 players with the mechanics they wanted. DS2 was there to practice and study up for next gen Darksiders 3

I hope we get 3 and 4.

Also Conkers Bad Fur Day. I need to know what happened to Berry!

She's permadead, son. The only mystery regarding the cliffhanger was where Conker would end up after getting drunk again, and although there was a sequel plan according to Seavor, the cliffhanger itself didn't amount to the original plot. It was supposed to involve him getting locked up after abusing his position as king after hitting the bottle, and would start off with an escape sequence similar to the original (only you were ball & chained rather than drunk).

Darksiders 2 hurt a whole lot, it fucking hurt more when THQ went down under and the team and the IP were split, killing the project. It hurts just as much to think that they're part of Crytek now, or elsewhere considering the economic issues Crytek had.

So yeah.

And I don't care what the OP said, HALF LIFE 2 EPISODE 2. God damn you, Valve. I graduated from High School, and will probably graduate from med school before I get my freaking conclusion to the HL saga once and for all.

Beyond Good and Evil.

I know a sequel is supposed to be in the works, but how long has it been since it was mentioned?

As much as I want it, Michel Ancel (probably the only driving force in the studio to get the game made) left Ubisoft and is working with Sony on another game. Makes me sad, we were this close to getting it made. They shouldn't have made that announcement so many years ago. *Sigh*

But hey, can I get you interested in an annual Assassin's Creed?

The Force Unleashed 3 will probably never happen.

Not after Disney killed LucasArts and nuked the Expanded Universe.

I would say Zero Escape 3, but I cannot be so sure it qualifies now... And that makes me very, very happy.

See you in two months and three weeks.

Rock's ending had him leave with Kain to figure out what happened to his mother, and I don't see KoF picking up that particular plot thread...

I still roughly hope for a sequel one day though...

Code Name: S.T.E.A.M.
Considering it's owned by Nintendo, they will certainly produce more consoles, it literally only just came out in NA and isn't even out in Europe 'till next month, it seems a bit odd to suggest it will never be continued at this point.

My nomination is Freedom Wars. The final cut scenes blatantly hint at huge amounts of the story yet to be revealed, and the odds are against it ever being resolved.

Chrono Cross kind of ends with a cliffhanger
(Though no apparent threats remain, it is implied that Schala is still alive and traveling through many timelines, including our own, to look for Serge). Schala became a time/dimensional wanderer.

Highly doubt we will ever see a new Chrono game.

EDIT: Also Mega Man Legends 3 and Breath of Fire IV.

wait what.
she found serge. This is made very clear by that photo, they got married. That real life schala sequence was just a way to express that in every reality there is a kid looking for that realities serge and she will always find him.

Precisely. That has potential. Besides, we don't know of the ultimate fate
of Magus, or the real deal about the Ghost Children. Plenty of stuff that could shine in a sequel.

ill definitely give you that magus point, awesome sequel potential.
but as for the kid and serge we knew, they came full circle and should be left alone as they found one another.

I also highly doubt
Belthasar
will stop his time travel shenanigans. He vanishes completely at the end of Chrono Cross after setting the whole thing in motion. I firmly believe there could be a lot more to his character in a potential sequel.

Crossing Eden

Hello, my name is Yves Guillemot, Vivendi S.A.'s Employee of the Month!
It would've been so bad that it's good. Would've been an amazingly bad story.

Conduit's 2 ending.

Kya ended on a cliffhanger. It's too bad because it was a pretty damn good game.

See the ending cued up here:

Actually came to post this. It along with BGE were 2 games I happened to get dirt cheap around the same time, played through and loved. And neither did well in sales or got a sequel.

Though, Kya didn't help that half the copies of the game had the endings backwards where saving all the wolfen was supposed to give you the real ending but sometimes would give you the black out ending.

This thread is really depressing and makes me really irritated with the industry's stance on 'narration' or lack thereof.

Did they ever close the C&C Kane/Tiberium arch?

Happy that I don't have to mention Dreamfall here. Unhappy about that I do have to mention Beyond Good & Evil.
Also
KOTOR2
and
Mass Effect 3

LOSERS!

This had a story? You are referring to the racing game right?

A pretty loose back story for the premise but it was one of the best arcade racers last gen that still had lot it could do better. And the end scene set up a sequel with a: "To be continued." Now it never will be.

Vanquish. Need more rocket sliding in my life. Oh and it would be cool to find out what the space russians and space america do post vanquish ending.

Here's another one that I'm surprised hasn't been mentioned yet.

Why the fuck wasn't this given a sequel? The ending is like "Hey that bad guy you have been chasing the whole time that you thought you just killed on the final level isn't actually dead but now we can go and hunt him down together!" and credits roll. Such a good game too :(

"XIII" and "Psi-Ops: The Mindgate Conspiracy" are my contenders for unresolved games that will never get a sequel/resolution.

Psi-Ops, as I remember, was really bad; like the main antagonist was like all "OMG I know what it all about" in end, then cut to credits, while the player is scratching his head. Aside from that, excellent (underrated?) game though, great game-play mechanics.
