That New 3DS video doesn't look smooth at all, it still looks choppy as heck.

The new 3DS video shows it running at 30 fps. I can take some screencaps in VLC to prove it, if you want. This is a huge improvement over the old 3DS version which is capped at 20 fps.

By the way, the Wii version is FUCKING amazing! I haven't finished it yet (only on chapter 15), but that's mainly because the replay value is off the charts. I keep coming back to the levels to find all of the hidden medals, get S rank times by finding new speedrunning routes and techniques, and S rank gem collection by chaining together huge combos. The controls are fast and precise, and along with the lush visuals and beautiful soundtrack, make the simple act of flying around immensely satisfying. This is easily one of the best third party games on the Wii (and maybe even best Wii games overall!).

Proof of framerate

Here are four consecutive frames which I grabbed from a video of it running on the old 3DS.

http://i.imgur.com/25pZQ93.png
http://i.imgur.com/oFHU7oS.png

Notice how the in-game time counter increases by 0.05 each frame? That is because each frame takes 0.05 seconds (i.e. 1/20th of a second) to draw. The clock goes up by 0.05 every single time a new frame is drawn, so the game draws 20 frames over the course of a full second.

Now I'll show four consecutive frame grabs from the new 3DS video

http://i.imgur.com/bvgXbEX.png
http://i.imgur.com/eSsamp7.png

Here, between the first frame and the second frame, the in game clock still increases by 0.05, and again between the second and third frames. However, between the third and fourth frames, the in game clock does not change, even though the rest of the frame changes. The pattern:

Frame 1: increase clock by 0.05
Frame 2: increase clock by 0.05
Frame 3: don't increase clock

continues throughout the entire video, so there are 30 frames drawn in the time it takes for the timer to increase a full second. (The timer goes up by a total of 0.1 for every 3 frames drawn, so this equates to 1 second for every 30 frames drawn.)

Edit: I changed the images to links because it's easier to observe the changes in consecutive frames if you open them in separate tabs and switch between the tabs

Thanks for those impressions, they really solidify my intention of buying the Wii U (with included Wii version) version come Fall or whenever else it releases in EU.

Got my copy! Oh yeah!

Gave me a black screen at first, but I eventually figured out that you had to change the language setting in the loader to Japanese to get it to run. This is gonna be great!

I love this image. I look forward to getting just the Wii version somehow when it comes out.

Maybe the Wii only version is gonna show up somehow later in used game stores etc. hmmm then again if someone had to purchase the Wii U version at full price to get it, i can't imagine them getting rid of it like that...

People who didn't follow the game's development probably won't realize that the Wii version is the better product, they'll most likely assume that it's just a lesser version of the Wii U game and I bet a lot of them will sell it or trade it in without even playing it.

The Wii game isn't perfect, my main issue is with the camera which turns way too slowly when moving it manually and sometimes gets stuck inside geometry. Also the framerate is usually 60 but it drops like a rock during some sequences, Other than that, though, the game is pretty great.

Assuming that Wii version comes in its own case for NA/EU release...

I've just beaten the Wii version with S ranks in everything but the final boss time attack, and I've found every medal in the game except for one -- the second silver medal in Chapter 18. I've spent HOURS flying around the giant fortress at the end of the level trying to find it, but to no avail. There are a couple of small areas where it could be hidden in between the bonus room with the first silver medal and the fortress, but I've checked them pretty thoroughly and didn't find it there either. I don't suppose either of the two other posters with the game know where it is? I'm pulling my hair out here trying to locate it.

PS FPS mode is awesome!

In five months you might find more helpers :D

So, did anybody jump in for Japanese limited edition?

Asking because I'm not sure about reserving the European one, since the only thing interesting me (except the Wii version which will be available separately) is the included soundtrack.

What sort of music is it?

I finished getting all the S ranks. Hooray! It seems like I unlocked something that I have to press the 1 and 2 buttons to activate somewhere, but I can't read Japanese so I have no idea what I unlocked or where I have to activate it. (The message was similar to the FPS mode unlock message, which I was able to decipher since it said "FPS mode" in English.) There were actually a couple of similar messages that played earlier in the game, now that I think about it. I wonder what other unlockables am I missing out on?

Regarding the second silver medal in Chapter 18, after spending another hour scouring the level without success, I'm starting to think that the designers goofed up and forgot to place it at all. Or maybe they accidentally placed it before the first medal, or stuck it inside some geometry or something. I may have to boot the game up in Dolphin and try out that free range camera hack to find it.

I suppose you can't reproduce the screen with the message so you could snap a pic and post it here for someone to translate? :)

Woohoo, finally found the last medal to get me to 100%! Turns out you can actually see it up in the air above the last island before you fly over to the giant fortress, but it's too high up for you to reach from the island, so you have to go to the fortress, climb all the way to the top, shoot yourself off the edge and then free fall for around 30 seconds before you can fly to the medal. Tricky!

It played a couple of messages afterwards but I don't think it unlocked anything. Took pictures at TheMoon's suggestion if anyone wants to translate them.

My Japanese is very rudimentary. All I could get is "Rodea play." I think they're thanking you for playing. I could try to translate more when I have a bit more time. :)

ETA: oh, lol. See above. At least I got those two words right. Thank you, hongcha!

"You acquired all of the legacy medals!

You can now play with a new costume for Rodea."

"To play with the new Rodea costume, hold the minus button when you start a chapter."

Thanks! I wonder if the other unlockables can be accessed by holding buttons at the start of the chapter as well.

EDIT: Yep, you also get different costumes by holding 1 or holding 2 at the start. Holding both 1 & 2 gives you the same costume as holding just 1, so I think the thing I unlocked from getting all S ranks is something different. (Or maybe it unlocked them both at the same time which is why the message said 1 and 2.)

The new costumes seem kind of lame, but I think I was setting myself up for a letdown by guessing they would be themed after Sonic or Nights or something.

okay am i crazy or were there never touch screen controls outside of some menu stuff:

http://www.siliconera.com/2015/06/0...r-impressions-take-your-time-learning-to-fly/

The only major difference appears to be that the Wii U version is the better looking of the two. Controls were similar for the most part, since you’re mainly controlling Rodea via the touch screens on both platforms.

...

Unfortunately, the controls didn’t feel intuitive and were hard to grasp. I felt like I was working against them for the most part. Using the touch screen, you set a direction to head in and while you’re on course you can move the camera around to change your course or target enemies.

Maybe they added them to try and replicate the Wii controls? I find it hard to believe that Siliconera would just make something up like that.

well i never was able to switch controls in such a way that let you do that... and at the same time i can't read japanese so maybe i just didn't know where to look.

the default controls, for me at least, were pretty much all face buttons. touch screen was optional for level select and some menu stuff.

Why? Going by what AniHawk says, he played it completely without them. If they're even there lol.

Well due to positive impressions and the likely fact that the game be very rare in the not so distant future I bit the bullet and preordered the game. Three months to go.

Sounds weird. I don't remember anyone talking about touch screen stuff in here at all.

looks like the article was updated

Update: It appears we made a mistake in describing how the controls work in the the two versions of Rodea. After speaking with NIS America, we understand that the 3DS version is controlled via the Circle Pad and Shoulder buttons, while the Wii U version is controlled with the Left and Right Sticks as well as the Shoulder buttons.

As a result, we’ve removed the original paragraph describing how the controls work to avoid any confusion. We’ll have updated impressions of Rodea closer to release, but in the meantime we apologize for the error.

So is the Wii U version worth playing if you already beat the Wii version?

i went at it the other way, where i played the 3ds version first, and i'm interested in playing the wii version. the level design, game progression, and general feel of the game is different. the wii u/3ds game is 'slower' but it's also bigger, with focus more on exploration with an action-adventure feel versus the action game that is the wii version. if it helps, the wii u/3ds version feels more like a n64 era nintendo platformer while the wii version feels more like a dc era sega platformer. it's kind of weird that they're so different yet similar, but i can really get into both.

Oh wow, thanks for finding this! I was a bit disappointed that it was 20fps on a regular 3DS, and I might consider the 3DS version as a complement to the Wii game (which I'll get with the Wii U version) upon its western release now.

Does anyone have a video of the game running in 30fps on a New 3DS? The one previously linked in this thread has been removed. Thanks in advance!
