Dumbest Game Studio Names?

Platinum is great because it's something they integrate into their games' scoring/ranking system. It translates into a nice logo and jingle too.

As much as I love them, I've never liked Naughty Dog or their logo... and I love dogs.

How dare you bring Tango into this.
I challenge you to a duel.
Consider it accepted.

Yeah, this thread if nothing else is showing that you basically can't impress everybody. I didn't realize until just now that people dislike Naughty Dog's name, for example. I'm certainly biased having grown up on their games, but it never occurred to me.

The thing with Naughty Dog is that they've come a hell of a long way from (and have basically zero attachment to) the couple of dudes nerding out in a garage.

Like, when I know that they guys who put a secret code into their game so that you could see their pixel art of nekkid girls also called themselves "Naughty Dog" (and with a mascot that looked like a worse-than-90s-leering-Chester-Cheetah-knockoff), I can't give the benefit of the doubt that it wasn't an in-joke about them being a bunch of horny dudes.

CD Projekt - Perfect name for a mostly PC (re-)publisher at the time and place of creation. It's a business project which involves selling CD-ROMs. Duh.

How do you make any sensible studio name that starts with CD Projekt? I don't really think you can. "RED" was possibly the shortest thing that wasn't horrible.

CD Projekt was the first company in Poland to sell CD-ROMs after the fall of the Berlin Wall, before that literally every game was pirated. RED probably refers to Poland.

Great read

I remember thinking Gaijinworks being a really dumb name. The logo even has (had?) a white guy on it. Seriously, you're defining your company legacy through a word like "Gaijin"?

Sumo Digital is an OK name, but it doesn't really make sense. It's still OK by me though because it's easily recognizable.

I think its more of the fact that the Naughty Dog of today is a very different company than old Naughty Dog and the name just doesn't hold up anymore to what they are serving now.

They're not called it any more, but I hated the name Artificial Mind & Movement, or rather it's abbreviation 'A2M' for short. Whoever came up with that obviously was not familiar with certain parts of the Internet.

I think they're called Behaviour Interactive now. I wonder if this factored into their decision at all.

yes it did. The company was called a2m before a2m was commonly known as referring to ass to mouth

Yeah, that's fair enough. Though I feel like that keeps them a little honest and humble rather than trying to say "we're super awesome and think we're God's gift to gaming."

what is pretentious about having a name that is supposed to be pleasing to the ear?

Everything? It's fine if you don't mind how pretentious it is, but it can't be argued that it's not pretentious.

If GAF was to launch a game company, what would its name be?

B-WARE
Tagline: We Delayed MGS V And It Wasn't Even Ours

I personally like Monolith Productions or simply 'Monolith', and hate Monolith Soft - because of Monolith Productions, and stopping it at 'Soft' grinds as bad as the bizarre structuring that affects From Software.

I actually like location names like Sony Santa Monica or the 2K/Rockstar [Location] names etc. It's usually the bullshit made up words that I hate. As an odd example, I do actually like Psygnosis' phonetics but it grates for being a made up name, even if it's simply a pun in comparison to some other outright nonsense studio names.

Anything that attempts to have a sense of humour just smacks of non professionalism and I hate deliberately long studio names. Should be two words max. I hate it when foreign studios go for English names and fail in translation. For example, if you're a Japanese studio, just go with a Japanese name if you're going to fuck it up. As much as I hate Konami now (i.e. the management), it's still probably my favourite studio name and I'll always associate it with PS/PS2 output.

RedEye Interactive, what 989 Studios/Verant/SOE/Daybreak (Everquest devs) used to be called. I can't even find the logo anymore on the internet, I remember it being a little silly. Damn that studio had a lot of name changes.

By saying "everything" you're saying nothing at all. And of course it can be argued that it's not pretentious, that's what I am doing right here right now. Saying "it can't be argued" strikes me as somebody who is convinced they are right without actually being able to back it up. Having a name that is regarded as pleasant sounding is pretentious how exactly? I can't argue with you when you haven't even given any reasons for it's pretentiousness

Pretentious literally means "attempting to impress by affecting greater importance, talent, culture, etc., than is actually possessed." Calling yourself something that you're not simply because you know it is regarded as important or beautiful by others is de facto pretentiousness. It cannot be argued otherwise.

You know saying "it can't be argued otherwise" only makes you look really stubborn to a fault, don't you?
They aren't calling themselves anything, or showing greater importance. Having a name that is pleasant to the ear and might catch people's attentions doesn't imply that they think everything they makes is pleasing to the senses.

I'm pretty stubborn about facts. There's no shame in that.

22Cans has to be the dumbest. It was called that because there were 22 employees at the studio. Let me reiterate, when 22Cans was created, the founders fully intended to limit their workforce to 22 employees. I mean, what? Why would you ever plan on having a fixed number of employees anyway? And now they have more than 22 employees anyway, so the name doesn't even fit anymore.

there were no facts but ok man . Keep on getting needlessly offended at all these "facts"

I'm not a man and I'm not offended. I'm irritated that you think the dictionary definition is not a fact, but it doesn't offend me. You're welcome to like Cellar Door's name; clearly some people do. But you're wrong if you don't think that it's a ploy to bank on the prestige those words carry, which is pretentious behavior.

ughhh
I thought it was pretty obvious that I meant it wasn't a fact that they were being pretentious ( the supposed pretentiousness is what you were offended at) by using that name. And for the last time, just because you keep on saying it doesn't make it true.
Nothing else to say here, this is going in circles
