Rare to announce new game at E3

You're getting a light-hearted game from them like it should be. There's enough "mature" titles out there.
Never say never. Simon was the creative director on Call of Cthulhu. :p

...but yeah. It's most likely a colourful game.

(unless it's Banjo-Cthulhuuie!)

Kameo was 2005 - Urchin is canceled 2008

maybe Kameo did not sell well enough
One of the things that I always find funny is when people always quote Kameo and Perfect Dark Zero as being flops at the launch of the 360. In the industry if you break even you're lucky, you're in the minority. If you make a decent amount of money you're really in the minority. You're in the top percentile. Those two games made a lot of money. For the install base they sold phenomenally well. Kameo is still selling now.

Both games featuring female protagonists, and they sold more than enough to make up for their costs and then some.

I'm sure it will be some garbage like Kinect Sports: Shit Edition or Nuts & Bolts 2 because making an actual Banjo Kazooie game makes too much sense, I mean why would they actually make the game that fans have been telling them we want for 15 fucking years. Obviously the best business move is to leave free money on the table and ignore your consumers. It's cool though because Playtonic is picking up all the free money that Rare didn't want. If Rare had approached a project in the same size/scope of Yooka Laylee they could have certainly turned a worthwhile profit while generating good will from all the fans they lied to and fucked over with that misleading trailer for NB that implied it would be BK3. Everyone claims it wouldn't be worth it for Rare to make a game like that but nobody forces games to either be small indie projects or AAA multi million budget investments, as evident by games like Grow Home.

Jesus lol

OT: My guess is a new platformer IP. From what the Tweets suggest, it won't be Banjo 3.

Uhhhh, seriously, can it really be Battletoads ? Maybe as an minor, indie-budget game, but i couldn't see it being an big, system seller, AAA
call it how you want lol
game, it's just too simple, not that it's a bad thing, but i couldn't see much coming from it. I would bet morwe on a Banjo Kazooie game, and tbh after Yooka Layle i can't get much hyped for it.

Castle Crashers is the 13th best-selling XBLA title of all-time (and in the Top 10 if you remove the free games) so I could definitely see the logic in them wanting to revive Battletoads as a mid-budget 2D game as a low risk, moderate reward strategy. However, honestly, I think it's more likely that this is going to be a new IP.

The problem is that this is Ms Rare not Nintendo Rare so they will try to use The IPS better suited for Xbox audience. I doubt banjo will be that, after perfect dark and killer instinct Id say battletoads would be the next

You need to think bigger!

Downloadable sidescroller: Battletoads Neon by WayForward (followed by Battletoads & Double Dragon Neon)
AAA character action game: Battletoads Reborn by Platinum Games with Kojima as a consultant.

What you're saying makes sense. I think that Rare is working on a new IP.

Why would people even want Banjo 3 from current Rare? They had the chance to do it and chose to go a different direction entirely.

Heck, Greg Mayles who's designing the new game Rare will show at E3 was the man who said -

Some fans look back fondly and want more of the same, but the Banjo of yesteryear has no real place in tomorrow's market on the Xbox 360.

So why would anyone want them to work on a game that they didn't have any interest in making when they had the chance?

Perhaps he's wondering why someone would shoot a man before throwing him out of a plane.
If this does turn out to be Battletoads, all that I ask is that the game better make me hate myself (and my friends) while playing it.

Looking forward to it, whatever it may be. Whether already existing ip or new. Always love banjo, and hope we see more from kameo and jet force Gemini one day. Would have loved to have seen urchin too. Maybe a new game for Joanna dark but played from third person could be good too.

I have enjoyed all their output on Xbox apart from grabbed by the ghoulies (main character didn't really appeal), kinect sports (didn't seem to have much rare flavour) and nuts and bolts (really loved seeing banjo and kazooie again but I wanted to go on adventures with them, not spend my time creating vehicles and then seeing how well they drive).

I think you're right about the Battletoads with how long they've been hinting it, but it seems like such a strange choice when noone ever really liked the game, I mean it's a decent/hard beat em up, but there were way better games in that genre that I'd rather see rebooted like Streets Of Rage. There always has been and still is massive demand for collectathons so a true BK would be a no brainer considering it's the king of the genre, but based on how out of touch some of their past decisions have been I'm not very confident they'll do the smart thing. I mean, look at how they treat the Conker I.P, they totally could have made it a real game and gotten both the people that grew up playing Conkers: BFD to buy it as well as kids buying it that are into the cartoony art style. I agree that obviously the player base on XB1 is more likely late teens/adults but with the success of games like Skylanders it proves that games aimed toward different ages can still sell well, and that you don't need to try to imitate them (Project Spark) to be successful. I think that Conker: BFD most likely attracted people of different ages when it launched and that a new title could capture that wide audience again if handled properly.

They havent made a good game in years, my opinion is perfectly acceptable.

There's still longtime people there, but it's just a shame MS had them doing Kinect and avatar shit for years. The audience for their kind of games was never on the Xbox platform really though.

Viva Pinata was great, and BK Nuts and Bolts was a fun game concept itself, although a disappointing Banjo game.

I enjoyed Kameo quite a lot and it was my first game on the 360, and my favorite one on the 360 thank you very much. I'd certainly like to see the old transformations back (Ash was my favorite, it should come as no surprise for someone who always uses reptilian avatars, his self-healing trick was rather handy).

I'd just run around as this guy in the hub world wasteland for shits and giggles.

GOD I do remember how much I loved Kameo and its art style and effects.

As much as I would love for it to be Banjo...

It's going to be Battletoads they've teasted that waaaay to much lately for it to not be Battletoads and that just makes me sad as there are more then enough co-op beatem up games around already, I want more 3D Platformers damn it.

Yup, that is a platformer with a female protagonist. We got one. Pack it in, everybody. That's all we needed.

Yeah, that's not the context of that post. At all.

Rare has had no issues releasing games with female protagonists, which is what the poster I was replying to was claiming as to why the game was cancelled.

There are? Like what? Which of them has the challenge of the original Battletoads?

They can do a smaller thing with battletoads, I dont think it'll be the huge fresh project they've been hinting at.

It's just funny seeing the battletoads nostalgia since the game was shit with poorly designed difficulty and there were certainly better games in the genre at the time.

Wait why aren't people excited? I thought hyping up unproven studios who have only produced good designs and pretty art was "in" right now.

Sounds good! Even if I still have no plans for purchasing an Xbox anytime soon...

Seeing the Battletoads in 3D would be pretty neat, tho I hope such game will be more along the lines of Battletoads VS Double Dragon. More sidescroll beat 'm up, less frustrating minigames.

New Banjo Kazooie would make me turn my head pretty big too. Bonus points if they stick with the blocky Nuts 'n Bolts designs, I really liked those actually.

I think that's probably my most wanted Rare IP, but I'd love to see it as a 3rd person stealth game a la Splinter Cell instead of as a FPS.

I feel like me and you would be good friends. No love for Hololens, stealth style Perfect Dark... genius.

Yeah, would love that to happen too. Get to see Joanna as you play rather than just another fps.

Kameo was one of those rare games that got better the more you got into it. I can remember hating the controls, only to realize as i kept playing the controls became much easier to use as your form changes were upgraded. I played it all the way through and really enjoyed it. It was really a visual treat on the 360.

Sounds like a new IP, don't know, I always welcome new IP but they have such a great boatload of old IP they could use, maybe they will farm out old IP to different teams smaller or outside teams and the main team creates new IP? I would be okay with that.

Notice how he says--quite specifically, mind--that to HIM Rare is about doing new things. My understanding is that he's more involved with another project that is separate from Gregg's. Soooo.... That doesn't rule out the possibility of Banjo and/or Battletoads!

That quote is pretty out of context.

...but our aim is to take the 3D platform adventuring game into the next generation and do something more than just adding polygons. Some fans may want more of the same, but the Banjo of yesteryear has no real place in tomorrow’s market on the Xbox 360. What we want to do is retain all the elements that made the first two games so loved, but also try things that breathe new life into a genre that has sadly been neglected for many years.

If they succeeded N&B would have been amazing, I get the feeling they were too ambitious and had to scale things back a lot.

Imagine instead of just completing obviously placed challenges around a barren map, the vehicle creating was used to help you explore and find secrets in the levels just like learning new moves let you do in the first two games?

Whatever the case he didn't achieve his goal, lol. Good game though

I'm also a huge Battle toads fan. I never beat the original, but i got damn close. The combat what great for the time. it did so many things that other games didn't do or attempt.

So one Mayles brother works at Rare and is leading the game everyone is hoping returns Rare to their N64 dominance, while the other brother is working for a clone of N64 era Rare and making a spiritual successor to Banjo Kazooie. That has to make family dinners interesting.
