So I'm finishing up an Ys Origin Hugo Nightmare run, at
Zava
currently. I was having some trouble doing damage to her in the first phase of the fight, so I looked up a video and the first thing that struck me was that Hugo had a dust trail behind him when he ran in the video.

Wait a second. Hugo can dash?

I checked a walkthrough, and it does indeed seem I missed the Silver Bracelet, which allows you to dash. For some reason I didn't find it too weird that Hugo couldn't dash, since he's a magic user, unlike the two other melee characters.

I feel really dumb now, having gone through almost the entire game without being able to run quickly.

Speaking of YS 1, I finally started the PC version, and...is it normal to be addicted to grinding for the money to buy the best equipment? I did find a better shield on the 3rd floor of the Shrine. But so far I'm loving this game, simplicity included. First time playing any iteration of Ys 1 for that matter. Finished Ys 7 earlier this year (Final Boss on Nightmare was extreme!), and was going to start Memories of Celceta, but I'll hold off till I finish off what's been translated in order of release (series wise).

Think I'll get around sometime later tomorrow (er, uh... today I mean) and update the OP. Official English version of Napishtim is out, list what we know about Ys 8, etc.

This will probably be GAF's only Ys community thread for quite some time yet, I think. I want it to look nice and feel up-to-date, even if no one reads the first page anymore lol.

eh, I got rid of that whole section. Maybe a simple link to a dedicated music channel will suffice as a suitable replacement? Not sure if I know any comprehensive enough (wasn't there one that was recently shut down?)

Even better. Whole Sound Team jdk ~ jdk Band confusion makes me feel mentally exhausted. ;v;

You mean FalcomJDKSound (the source of the Celceta video), yes. The account got terminated due to copyright strikes from Chara-Ani, because of the Falcom Character Song Collections albums.

It's okay though - I got you guys covered with my own channel devoted to Falcom music. ;)

Didn't falcom come out a while ago and say it was ok to use any of their music so long as it was credited? Wonder if these are false DMCAs.

Falcom does have a "free music policy", but they have nothing to do with this. AFAIK, Chara-Ani controls those two albums (Falcom Character Songs Collection Vol.1 Estelle Bright & Vol.2 Olivier Lenheim).

Looks like Chara-Ani has control over the ones with the "オリジナル" tag.

Weird. Sucks to lose an account over something like that though.

This underground cave in Ys 6 can fuck off. Bats with laser beams that knock off 1/5 of my health, invincible bat crabs, oi vey.

Ys 6 has stuff i like and stuff i dislike
Sadly the stuff i dislike are worse than the stuff i dislike in other ys games :(

This alone trumps everything anyone can say is bad about Ark of Napishtim:

Mighty Obstacle

I'm not being cute. I'm deadly serious about this. This is my jam.

Worse case scenario; the game's only redeeming factor XP

...but all things considered the game's overall concept and elements are fine.

If I were to list the stuff I dislike about the game:
Much like Ys 2, you're gonna need gridning, you need this JUST to be able to survive some of the more annoying enemies in a dungeon.

Invincible enemies, well not really invincible but taking the enemies in
Limewater Cave
for example, a ertain type of enemy can't be killed without finding an accessory...which I never even KNEW about it until I read an FAQ, and while it was mentioned by NPCs, you wouldn't know you can get it unless you trigger a specific line of dialog and even THAT can be missed!

Jumping attacks. Just jumping attacks, either I'm slow or the game will usually thinK I want the diving stab attack. Cuz this was a pain in the ass against the boss in
Limewater Cave
. I had to grind SPECIFICALLY FOR THIS BOSS.
Got my FIre Sword to Lvl. 9 and, lo and behold: Special attacks can do critical damage which is how I killed the boss while my health was like under 50%
Seriously if they made this boss' arms get stuck on the ground with a certain attack, the fight would've been more bareable.

Oh and in this final dungeon? I GET ENEMIES WHO HAVE BUZZ SAWS ATTACHED TO THEIR FRONT AND I CAN BARELY HIT THEIR BACKSIDE TO SAVE MY LIFE. WHO THE FUCK THOUGHT THESE ENEMIES UP?!

i Don't mind that the game's slower compared to origin and OiF, but geez are some concepts irritating. I will not be ashamed to say that this game can really go for a remake or for a fan mod to alter some stuff...

Tizoc

Member
I dunno about you guys but Napishtim could totally use a rebalancing; remove dash jump and replace it with double jump, cut down on the need to grind EXP making it like OiF, alter how 'invincible' enemies take damage, make the sword dive attack come out by HOLDING the attack button while in the air, make damaging the limewater cave boss a little easier. Maybe add a minimap option, cuz memorizing the limewater cave is a pain in the ass.

Other than that I'd say the game's fine, I like it's 'slower' combat compared to OiF and Origin, and the setting and dungeons.

Remake or bust. Hope you like party-switching. Playable Olha and Terra might be worth it, though.

Actually if they do remake it, add in a Geis and Olha mode where you can play the game from their point of view-
Olha could play like Hugo for example.

So I've been playing Ys I on Steam. The only other Ys game I played was Oath in Felghana, which I beat on Normal with great difficulty (harder modes would make me curl up in a fetal position and cry). But it felt awesome when I finally did win.
So I picked normal in Ys. So far as good. Stupid bat boss was a pain in the ass, totally random and luck based and shitty, but w/e, it didn't take me that many tries in the end.

But now I'm at Dark Fact and... I almost wish I could say that I just can't, that I have to quit trying because this game is too hard for me and it's impossible. That way I could take the easy way out.

But then this happened:
gy1X0te.jpg

And now I can't rage-quit. I can't say it's impossible. I have to win now. Because I know I can. Somehow.

Dammit.

Any reason for not playing with the Complete frame? I personally think it's wayyyy better, plus it has a nostalgic feel.

I think that fuck/shit/damn gif posted above is a bannable offense, you may want to edit that... (but I agree that I probably looked like that after dark fact)

Anyway, just finished celceta, enjoyed it, but sometimes the conversations went on for too long, or you were forced to talk to the entire town before being able to proceed and it kinda messed up the flow of the game.
I started a nightmare run, but the fish boss is so annoying, I'm going to take a long break before trying again.

Can't wait for ys8 info :)

Welp just beat Napishtim, as is my ranking is

1- OiF
2- Seven/Origin
3- Ys1/2/6

As I said 6 has some good stuff and some bad stuff and I mentioned them in a previous post.

For that matter, what exactly was the whole point of the pirate crew? All they ever seem to do is just...help save the Redha people, not like they do much in this game @_@

I think Hatsuu figured out the answer to this during editing, actually. The pirate crew exists to show how well-traveled and accepting of other cultures Ladoc is, since it's pretty obvious from their names and appearances that they're all from very different parts of the world. This is something we did a bit differently in this version than has been seen in any previous version of the game, too, as all previous translations have given these characters names which, while still accurate enough interpretations of the katakana, seemed a bit "whitewashed" by comparison.

i enjoy the party system and using multiple characters, so the idea of playing only as Adol isn't exactly thrilling

Have you played a non-party-system Ys game before? If not, you might be surprised! It plays very similarly to Ys Seven, except instead of switching characters, you're switching magic powers. Same in Ys VI with swords, and Ys Origin with artifacts -- the only real difference in Seven and Celceta is a visual one.

nope, i only have Seven and Celceta under my belt

Was Seven your first Ys game?

Most fans of the series WANT more solo Adol adventures.

Celceta was my first

I'm interested in your opinion of the other games in the series considering you've only played the 2 "modern ones", 99% of the fanbase considers Oath and Origin to be the best games, so I hope you enjoy them.

I also think everyone should play Ys 2 but that's just me. :p

Has anyone played Ys 4 PCE with the fandub?

Haven't played it with the fandub, but I have played it, and I can definitely vouch for it -- it may be the single greatest 16-bit game I've ever played (if one is to believe the TG16 to be a true 16-bit console, at any rate). Absolutely exceptional Ys experience all-around.

Too bad magic is way overpowered (at least in the chronicles version) :( .

I really liked Ys I & II Chronicles, despite their shortcomings.

Why does everyone keep hyping Magic in Ys 2? You only ever get 1 useful spell, and it's the very first spell you get: The fireball.
It's the ONLY offensive magic you get...

Time stop and barrier

Also that first spell evolves over time

It's a super-effective spell, though. And I disagree that it's the only useful one -- every single spell you get in Ys II is *incredibly* useful. Some, like Light magic, are used sparingly, but most can be used strategically on a regular basis to add a whole lot to the game (Alter magic, for example, lets you talk with monsters and get some background info you'd miss otherwise).

I dunno what that is. I was offered a choice between Complete (2001) and Chronicles (2009), and I figured the 2009 version would be the better one. Was I wrong? What are the differences between the two?

Keep in mind I'm an Ys noob, only ever played Oath before that.

Defeating Dark Fact gets you to Ys 2, so it's worth it.
Huh? Are they not separate games? In my Steam library they're separate entries. What do you mean?

6 tries?? Jesus I suck. I must have retried like 25+ times (including some reloads after having bad starts). I don't even know what I did "right" on that time when I almost won. It's just too fast and frantic and my reflexes are just not that strong. I mean I'm no stranger to challenging games, I laugh when people say Rom is a hard boss in Bloodborne, but those bullet hell things are just too hard and I have no idea what I'm doing. ;_; I need to git gud but I dunno how...

That's just for soundtrack. There's a setting in the .ini that allows you to switch between classic Ys frame mode or stretched and full-screen like your pic (resembling the PSP port HUD):
EDIT: oh wait it's actually in the game's config, under Display Mode: Complete (4:3) and Chronicles (30:17).

Peeps like to consider them as one game, forgetting that you can just ignore 1 and go straight to 2.

You... are wearing the Silver equipment, right? This is actually pretty important.

I like to run alongside when he's traveling diagonally to inflict multiple hits, but that's best for the corners because it will very likely leave you with little room to maneuver.
