Project Cars review thread

They aren't the demographic for it, I was expecting more of those types of reviews TBH.

But it really seems like the guy who reviewed it had no prior experience with racing simulators and does not particularly like the genre. Well, at least they did not let their FPS guy review Bloodborne...

I am so surprised by the positive reviews! I mean, I believed in the project from the start because I was one of the early backers, but I really didn't expect the mainstream media to like it this much.

Awesome

Comparing this with driveclub is about as useful as comparing Bloodborne and The Witcher 3. Unnecessary shade being thrown in that DigitallyDownload review.

Are these all PC reviews or are console ports there too?

On this note: I, personally, would appreciate it if the person running the OP could take the time to mention which version they reviewed/are reviewing. Might help, especially when issues can be platform specific and features and performance are usually different on each platform, even more so when a game is also on PC. It's just a little thing that sometimes bothers me about review threads.

Comparing this game and Driveclub seems so absurd. Totally different experiences.

I didnt understand one thing though. In career mode, these events are real events, right?. Because at Eurogamer, it says "most of its series are unlicensed." I am not really following motorsports in real life but still, i would love to play with real drivers in real-world events. Playing in fake series doesn't appeal to me, like playing with fake clubs in PES.

I get that Shacknews gave it a 6, but if you watch their 'lets play' view with Joe at the helm, he seems to really like the game.

Love this quote:

That shouldn't put you off, though. Project Cars is a brave step forward, one that this genre has been in dire need of for some time. When you experience just how well a racing game can work when the training wheels are taken off and you're given free rein to act as you wish, you'll struggle to understand just why the mainstream racing franchises didn't incorporate the idea sooner. Gran Turismo and Forza Motorsport have just gained a new podium partner.

This is the game the genre has needed (on consoles) for a long time. Even though they excel in other areas, I hope polyphony and Turn 10 are watching as they can lead a thing or 2 from this game.

Nice! Looks like a worthy competitor to GT and Forza. I knew this game would be great. All the videos I've seen looked awesome. I haven't played a Sim in a good while, so I will definitely pick this up one day.

The strong reviews keep coming, and I'm mightily relieved. Congratulations, SMS, this really does look like the game I've been praying for over the past decade or so. I'll raise a toast to you at midnight when I finally get to play.

Gaaawd, I was kinda hoping I didn't have to play this right away. I don't have the time. :( Was expecting big bugs at launch, glad to be proved wrong.

Please let this be a successful franchise!

Nice reviews !

Was going to purchase the game anyways since I had a Team member discount code but it is done, the game awaits.

Glad that this seems to be reviewing well, despite the seemingly obligatory comparisons to stuff like Forza Horizons by some reviewers. Might as well compare it to Mario Kart 8, not that I don't love Mario Kart 8.

No unlocks? Having everything available in the beginning is actually a super huge plus for me.

Yep.

I love that you can immediately race any car on any track, and that you can start your career at any level of any discipline.

All the cars feel different enough and are enjoyable enough to drive that it's not like you're progressing from worst to best anyway, just from fun to a different kind of fun.

For the meristation article in the OP, a good conclusion (from the long ass paragraphs that barely make sense even in Spanish, they aren't properly punctuated and uses a ton of sentences that don't really add/mean anything) would be this:

Project Cars is the answer to plenty of petitions, and a collective project that has absorbed all good ideas. It's a perfect equation with an outstanding result. Pure motorsports.

Currently sitting at 87 on Metacritic (yes, I know metacritic isn't relevant etc etc), impressive stuff.

Only 6 reviews for the moment with an overrepresentation of 9+ reviews I think. I suppose it will finish somewhere in the 82-83 zone.

I've not read the whole review yet but Shacknews basically dropped it off the cliff because it's as sim?

Nice one chaps. I'll be sure to give this Pink Lady apple I'm eating an middling review because it's not a golden delicious apple.

I'm really interested to know how the Morpheus support is going to pan out. I guess at this stage there aren't any Morpheus' in the wild for reviewers to refer to at the moment, are there, unlike the development kits for Oculus?

Not that my decision hinges on such things, more a curiosity thing.

Some people just don't like sim games? Why is that so hard to believe?

People say they should have made someone who likes sim games review but then I can just say he rated it too high because he's biased towards sim games.

It's just a dudes opinion, not sure why people get up in arms about.

So it's a review from a guy who don't like sims for people who also don't like sims.

Seems rather pointless.

It does sound like a success. I want to get it but Witcher 3 does take priority for me. Maybe in the summer when nothing else is coming out.

Okay if you want to make things that silly and simple then I can just say a review from a guy that likes sims for people who like sims is also pointless. We both know that's not true. It's just someone's opinion. The game is reviewing well anyways not sure why people always focus on the worst scores in these threads.

I would have no problem with a 6 review giving legitimate criticisms from a sim point of view. But criticizing a sim game for being a sim is all kinds of wrong.

Indeed. It is completely pointless so the review should have never came to light from such a person. It only makes the magazine/media as a whole look bad for no matter what reviewers think, they represent the publication.

What I don't like is how many of the review (not all) are also non-constructive or doesn't highlight their expectations despite saying the game doesn't meet it in certain areas. Very quick to say, "I don't like it they could have done better", but they never really to say "WHAT" exactly is the problem and what exactly could they have done better . I hope more people identify these reviewers and completely ignore them... but hey, what else is new.

There was a good comment about the UI design though from one of the mainstream medias. This element is massively important and often taken for granted; the UI that appears when you win/lose a race along with its music together with the menus within the game all affect the enjoyment and immersion factor. This is an area that arcade games like Ridge Racer, Daytona, Mario Kart, F-Zero and other racers generally got down to a T: when you win you feel good during the UI screen along with the moment you've won the race, and the same applies when you lose as well. Yes, this is a sim but crafting the UI is still an important factor that must always be remembered. Crafted sequences of screens and music all goes a long way when done with care, but when it is not cared about in production it can quickly debunk the the player's feelings of joy with staleness. All studios must remember this no matter what kind of racing game you are creating..

Not really a review as such, more an article.......but opinions are always worthwhile I think.

Some will complain at the lack of licensed cars, but they're missing the point. Project Car's excellent career mode will have you jumping from one racing class to another - learning and re-learning as you progress is all part of the challenge, and it is one that never fails to satisfy. At the game's peak, in a 24-hour endurance race against 30 other competitors, with rain lashing down and darkness setting in, Project Cars becomes something truly spectacular.
