Splatoon character design

They just look so hip trendy and cool. The game is just oozing a sense of fashion and individuality.

Sorry for the picture overload.

I totally agree, the design is fantastic. I think it's mostly down to the heavy fashion focus. It also helps that the renders are fantastic too:

Phew just posted in the IGN splatoon voiceless chat, had to get out before unesseccary mess came lol. Anyway I wonder who will be the villains in splatoon 2 the adult squids maybe?

Splatoon is an example of a perfect synergy between gameplay and art. However I'm not sure the character designs are timeless designs.
They may end up being too much of a product of their time, partly due to them having such a strong emphasis on (90's) fashion. Just like the current 90's fashion revival, it may not be here to stay.
Concept-wise I think the game does have potential to see a return on future consoles. Maybe they'll evolve the inkling designs.

I agree with these fine folks.
They remind me of Xbox 360's avatars but with an angry face. I don't think I like them.

Nothing about this game appeals to me at all and yes I did play the stress test.

FWIW I didn't care for Sunset Overdrive either, which IMO shares the "90s aesthetic".

Maybe frantic TPSs just aren't for me anymore.

This is a weird IP for me, I know I should like it, but its not doing much for me. The design and art style feels like its right out of 1994. It could be my overall enthusiasm for Wii U, but there is so much else coming out I am willing to miss out on this one. The strange times of the global testfire didn't help, I wanted to play, but not at 4am.

Should have made that the spoiler. But still, you're forgiven.

I just think that the Smash DLC costumes for them look funny, that's all! But them existing at all shows that Nintendo is aware that people want them and they know that people take a linking to the designs. I do hope that Nintendo doesn't consider this enough and look further into it, some cool play styles and move sets could come out of the Inklings for Smash (paint slows your opponent down, Yoshimitsu style disappear and reappear behind opponent when in ink etc), but I'm obviously getting off topic here. Yes I hope that they make it into Smash!

I know.

I'm just trying to convince myself that there's still a chance.

;__;

:( Hopefully the votes on the Smash ballot help :)

I don't know why but I get huge Jet Set Radio vibes from looking at them; and playing Splatoon reminded me of the Dreamcast as well. It just 'pops' I guess.

Their design perfectly complements the gameplay. They aren't overdesigned. They're defining feature (squid tentacles) is beautifully integrated into their design.

Also, GAF Gold, huh?

It's a bit weird, usually Nintendo doesn't release bullshots (cf. Mario Kart 8), but for Splatoon they all have anti-aliasing when the game doesn't.

I don't like the hair design of the boys, but the girls look nice. I'll probably play as a girl inkling while I usually pick male characters in games with gender choices.

I want an hairstyles dlc or the male inkling will wear hats forever

I think the Inkling Boy hairstyle is awesome! Nintendo did a phenomenal job with it, because you have to think about the fact that they too are squid and so have tentacles drooping off of their humanoid head form. So for the girl, it made sense to give her long "lady-like" tentacle hair.

But then look at the boy, what do you do to differentiate them from the girls? What to do with those tentacles? You can't just cut them off, lol. So you give the boys the "Surfer" treatment in order to keep their tentacles in check. I love the thought that went into the designs!

Nintendo should recreate some of the clothing in the game and sell them on Cub Nintendo or something haha...

I get sad at the chance of this game being a one time thing only because it's released on the WiiU that will likely not give the game the sales it deserves.

I like it very much, it's modern (their clothing style), stylish and unique. Nintendo once again created some very memorable characters.

I'm thinking Nintendo already set their expectations fairly when making the game due to when it was announced in the Wii U's life time and the knowledge of how much their games are selling.

I'm thinking if it makes at least 500k, which isn't unreasonable, it ought to give Nintendo a good incentive to try doing a future sequel. The constant support should hopefully give it some good legs.

Just to clarify, do you see a distinction between looking concentrated and looking angry? How do you reconcile everything about their face looking 'angry' while always either smiling or smirking?

Angry / evil / plotting? They look like they're up to something to me.

I just really don't like their eyes, some of you see concentration while they look angry or annoyed to me. What's even with the heavy black eye liner?

Is not that they didn't released artwork where they look happy but without the competitive/attitude smile...

Sorry I've not seen every piece of promotional artwork for the game? I'll try harder for you next time.
