Digital Foundry - Witcher 3 performance analysis XO/PS4

DA on ps4 was higher resolution and featured a bit of extra tessellation. That's why it likely drops in comparison. The XO would not handle it nearly as well at the same settings. I do kind of wish dynamic resolution had been used there as it seems like a perfect case for it.

Dunno about Witcher 3 since I haven't actually played the xo version myself.

Ah, I see. Thanks!

Been playing the PS4 version and although it's not without it's faults, I've been very happy playing it and do think it's quite an achievement technically, can see myself losing a lot of time to this game.

I'd be surprised not to see both versions improve over time. I haven't played the Xbox version and I don't really have any interest in which console "wins" the face-off but if I didn't have a PS4, I wouldn't hesitate in buying the Xbox version of the game.

What do you mean by 'better optimization'? Would you be ok with reduced quality and effects in order to consistently hit the 30 fps target?
Optimization can give you even better image quality or effects holding a solid 30fps.

This game needs to be optimized in the parts where you get sub-30fps... it is a fixed platform so it is not hard like PC... if you optimize you will reach solid 30fps.

Everyone has an opinion I guess, but people opting for the XB1 version instead of PS4 is baffling, most people take the DF articles way to seriously, I know that is their job, but they always make things look worse than they actually are. Sounds to me they are 1-2 patches away from having a very stable version.

Going by that logic then why not have the PS4 @720p, master of versions!!

Ok, so what makes you think the game is unoptimized?

Lol what?

You know that PS4 and X1 have the exact same CPU?

Well, I give up explaining stuff to people in this thread

They have the same CPU, except the Xbox One has higher frequency and allows developers using 7 cores (well, more like 6.7) rather than just 6. The advantage usually translates to very little, but it is there.

It sucks, I am sitting here with the game on my external hdd on my Xbox One... but I cannot play it until it's patched. I know there are plenty of people not bothered by the stuttering (or just don't really notice it), but it's far more then just distracting for me. I hope a simple 30fps cap pretty much eliminates the stutter, because that should be a quick patch.

Interested in seeing Digital Foundry's Face Off in the near future.

I'm playing on the Xbox One version atm and think it is one of the best looking games I've played on next gen, but if you read these articles/ this thread you would think that you are watching a flip book. It is almost embarassing the way these articles are construed.

Unless you are hyper sensitive or used to high end PC games then these are fine to play.

Think I'll wait for a patch or two to drop before getting this. I'm in no rush and I'm confident they'll improve all versions with launch out the way.

I have had a few little dips on PS4, but nothing has taken me out of the game at all. It is pretty smooth for the most part.

I played about 10 hrs of The Witcher on my XB1 yesterday, and overall, I found it to be quite enjoyable. I took a break about halfway through to get something to eat, and I couldn't wait to get back to the game.

I have the game installed on an external HDD, so IDK if it makes a difference in performance, but I must say, I felt the performance was generally good. I did notice the infamous stutters in the opening cut-scene, but oddly, I only saw maybe 2-3 stutters out of the many, many, cut-scenes or conversations to follow.

Game-play wise, I felt like it was pretty solid. I didn't notice any stutter in game-play, but I did notice some lower frame-rate in a few situations, particularly when I was fighting the Griffin.

Overall, I think the game looks & plays well on the XB1. Is it perfect? No. Do I think CD Project Red could do better? Yes. I have patch 1.01 installed, and it seems there may already be a 1.02 on the horizon. Hopefully the next patch will smooth-out some of the roughness, but for now, I'm enjoying the Hell out of it.

They should release an option for PS4 to have 900p and a better framerare (or at least a consisten locked 30 fps), if possible.

I think the janky animation and weird camera panning make the framerate seem worse than it actually is and people are responding to that.

so basically both of these consoles are struggling, this is probably going to be a short generation, lol.
Game looks and runs much better on consoles than most were expecting and performance is substantially better than most last gen open world games.

Consoles don't have unlimited power. To get the whole game running solid 30 concessions would have to be made. That's "optimization".
That is not optimization lol

Optimization is when you get the a software and make it runs better without any sacrifices... there is a lot of that in gaming or any other software... just a change in the code can make some part runs way better than the old code.

That is optimizations... the hardware and software quality won't change...

I wouldn't mind if they targeted 900 on ps4. On a monitor it's no so hot but on a tv, I like the look of 900 and 2ms or fxaa. I find it pleasantly soft, but not blurry. Without some kind of full screen aa tho, 900 looks not so hot.

The camera panning issue is not something I have noticed. And I am panning it often as I take in the jaw dropping world.

I mean..... Thats not really how this works.

Its down to the developers to make a game within a consoles abilities. Every gen, devs could have made games they can't handle at stable locked frame rates (and they do).

Been playing on xbone and it runs surprisingly well imo. There were a couple cutscenes that really stutter (notably the first one) and there is a good amount of expected open world rpg bugs and jank but performance has been solid and it looks gorgeous imo. Was playing Witcher 2 on 360 beforehand and man that was such a mess in comparison. lol Seems a lot smoother than GTA5 next gen ver as well.

Yeah I think this is the main issue, the frame rate itself really isn't that bad, but the slightly erratic controls and camera movement really exacerbate things. Hopefully CDPR will continue tightening things up, this game is amazing and just needs a spot of polishing.

I'm also really glad they got 8x AF in on PS4. I think that's probably the sweet spot for IQ/performance. 1080p with a solid post process AA solution and 8xAF definitely creates a much more pleasing image than most open world games. Hope more games follow suit.

Where are you getting 8xAF from? The texture filtering looks pretty bad to me.
