That all sounds very legit now.

Short end of it: Male protag only "during the story" but then at some point, you can switch genders after the story elements.

I think that Bethesda fucked up here. They should have done both male/female voice casting.

This is what I don't get. So what if I want to be female? Do I have to play through the story as a male first while ignoring all the side content or will I have the option at the start of the game and it just throws me out into the world with all the story content locked.

Both options sound horrible, I hope this rumor is false.

Despite that the leak is more likely to be fake but I'm going to make small list of information which would be easier for everyone to read.

  • Fallout 4, you are in Boston, and it takes place in the year 2287, exactly 10 years after Fallout 3.
  • In Fallout 4, mixing things up, we are making the game more "Story Based" and the player character will finally talk, and narrate his storyline.
  • At the beginning of the game, you create your character (You can only be a male in the main story),

  • DEVELOPERS: Fallout 4 is being developed by Bethesda Game Studios, the same developer behind Fallout 3.
  • GAMEPLAY: Fallout 4 plays similar to Fallout 3 and New Vegas. You can play in Third Person or First Person, or on the PC version, a new "Classic Mode" that will put the game into birds eye view and play similar to the classic Fallout Games. (Although by my experience, it actually looked and played more like the PS2/Xbox Fallout: Brotherhood of steel.)
  • Unlike Fallout 3 and Fallout New Vegas, you can only play as a man. This is due to the storyline requiring it. However, after the main story is over, you can have a gender change. BGS did not rule out Females for possible standalone DLC, however.
  • Additionally, full support for Trophies/Achievements are present on all console versions, and full steamworks support is present for the PC version.

Basically, the roadmap is this:
  • June 2015 - Fallout 4 reveal at E3, trailer only
  • July 2015 - First gameplay trailers
  • August 2015 - More information
  • October 2015 - PS4/Xbox One/PC release
  • November 2015 - First DLC
  • December 2015 - Second DLC, as well as PS3/360 version release
  • January 2016 - Third DLC
  • March 2016 - Forth DLC
  • April 2016 - Fifth and Final DLC
  • June 2016 - Fallout Spinoff revealed, in development by Behaviour Interactive.
  • October 2016 - Fallout Spinoff released for PS4/Xbox One/PC

I don't find the dlc coming out so early with the main release that big of a stretch tbh.

Fallout 3 had dlc lined up pretty quickly and they churned that stuff out quick.

I'm going to guess that while we play as that father character for a chunk of the game, we eventually find his family and you end up playing the rest of the game as one of his descendants. That PC is the one you get to create.

9/10 NeoGAFfers don't understand statistics. The other 3/10 don't care.
I am looking forward to a more seamless world, not having to load individual buildings, towns and cities.

Higher NPC counts would also be nice, dynamic weather and a less fiddly interface.

I like the idea behind the pipboy interface, but having to go to separate menu for every little bit of information was a chore on console.

Oh and a bigger song count on the radio!

There's no way Bethesda ever makes a main fallout or elder scrolls title without create your own character. It's one of the cornerstone elements of why people like their games, freedom to do whatever. Sure they'll make npcs unkillable because they can't write around it, but they wouldn't remove character creation.

Leaks really shouldn't be discussed here unless the op and title are changed. There is a clear distinction between speculation on a trailer and possible actual leaks or spoilers.

The first Fallout 3 DLC came out about 3 months after the game released and then the following were released about 2 months apart. And the Skyrim DLC was all spaced out pretty far. I think the DLC in the leak is way too quick, unless it's all dog armor or something.

A more developer authored narrative makes no sense. It would be baffling for Bethesda to think about what made Skyrim and Fallout so popular and then go in the opposite, linear direction.

Well, it certainly wasn't the main quest line, so they're free to do anything they want with that as long as the side quests everyone plays these games for stay intact.

Hmmm.. What if that particular narrative is wrapped up in what constitutes an elaborate, lengthy opening salvo? That it's when you find your family you are allowed to create your character (your child, or.. yourself?) as you please and that is where the 'real game' begins? The equivalent of leaving Midgar for the first time.

I think the idea of the PC being an android is another great way to have a voiced protag in the beginning of the game for whatever narrative beat Beth is trying to hit, but then reach a point where you can transfer your experience/skills, etc.. into a new body (and gender) of your choosing. You'd imagine the Institute would have gear like that.

Erm, the Witcher 3 has a narrative but it's hardly linear. Don't see why Fallout 4 couldn't do somehting similar.

This thread getting me psyched for the follow up done by obsidian.
i doubt the two companies will ever work together again. Obsidian got robbed and Bethesda has seemingly been pissed off multiple times with Obsidian after release (JE Sawyer commenting on Skyrim problems, Obsidian talking about their terms with Bethesda, one or two other events i cant recall atm that seemed to get Pete Hines super fucking pissed).

I hope we don't have to worry about protecting that dog from any ghouls or super mutants. It better be invincible and have it's own inventory so I could unload my stuff onto it. Would be such a chore to constantly worry about the dog, and no way would I be able to let it die just to make things easier.

I thought Obsidian was cool with Bethesda / Fallout. I remember reading interviews before saying they'd love to do another one.

Ugh... I've been so cought up with the exciting news of F4 that I overlooked Baker doing the voice for mc. Does that mean we won't be able to create a female character? ;0 the Samus dream is over.

Maybe im wrong and everything is fine but there appeared to be some resentment from both sides towards the other imo.

I don't think I've seen any confirmation of that being Baker's voice and even if it is, doesn't mean that there isnt a voiced female protag. We're just going to have to wait another 11 days and try to keep the outrage machine in check (not referring to your post, btw) until Bethesda's event.

I'm in camp believe on the leak. Shit just looks right.

And for the "BUT BUT MALE/FEMALE PROTAG"

Well the gender change thing. If the female protag just has basic lines for interaction, I could see it.

If that's the case then I'm not sure I give a shit about the series anymore unless Bethesda magically steps up there quest writing and c&c game.

I don't know about Bethesda, but Obsidian has outright said they would love to do another Fallout if Bethesda would let them/wanted them to. They even proposed they do west coast fallout (cause that's the area they know best) and Bethesda do east coast (since they're more familiar with that side of the country).

Of course, that requires Bethesda Softworks to want another game by them.

This "only male" feature would upset a huge part of the fan base. Can't believe they would make it.

I have seen few to none actually say they are excited for being forced to play a male character. Some have said they're ok with it or that it might be ok (and pointing to Witcher as an example. Except CDPR wasn't trying to make a game with complete freedom to play who you want and that is what Bethesda is most known for by its fans. Witcher and Fallout/Elder Scrolls are not the same game just cause they are both RPGs).

But in general most people are outraged. I haven't even seen the usual "let them make the story they want. You shouldn't enfore your vision on them" BS I usually see in arguments about letting people play female characters. Probably because no one really wants to play a set story in a Bethesda game. The whole point/allure of their games is the complete freedom to make your own story! It's not even like Bethesda is known for good story (quite the opposite really). It's an expected feature of Bethesda games. From what I've seen, I can happily say this would not go over well if true.

Oh, I thought it was confirmed to be Baker. If it's some random dude, then a random female voice wouldn't be far fetched. Most exciting e3 in a while.

This is what happens when you release a trailer to no official information and a sea of dubious leaks.

You'd think Bethesda would learn from what happened with DICE a month ago.

I have this recurring nightmare that they took out VATS.

It needs tweaking at the very least. Crippling legs and arms was virtually pointless unless used to slow down monsters. And human enemies always seemed to have some magic stimpak or backup weapon in their inventory, negating any efforts to take out their limbs or method of attack.

Making precision shots ought to offer more combat variety, but due to a lack of foresight on Beth's behalf, VATS failed, and quickly devolved into a headshot-assist system.

In retrospect they probably should have cut that last bit with the voiced protag from this trailer. We're likely going to get most of our questions answered in only a week and a half, so I get they figured that whatever the controversy, the gap between the reveal and the press event was shirt enough to weather it.
