Starcraft II: Legacy of the Void Beta Thread - Will You Be An Archon With Me?

Just to further what I'm talking about, reverting the missile turret to require engineering bay again is a step in the wrong direction. Letting terrans make missile turrets gave them the ability to negate the early toss cheese like proxy oracles and DTs. Not make those rushes useless mind you, but it made it so they weren't game-ending. Plenty of times in pro games I've seen protoss proxy an oracle or two and end the game on that because terran couldn't respond. The protoss proxies a stargate wherever it wants on the map and if terran doesn't scout that, it's basically over because the oracles chew up early marine counts and SCVs. That's never enjoyable to watch. It makes TvP more of a coin flip. But Blizzard seems to think game-ending early cheese is great for Starcraft.

The difference between this beta and Heart of the Swarm is like night and day, I remember there was a great deal of excitement for HOTS(SC2), there were even beta tournaments and such. This beta started with a whimper and not much in terms of fanfare or excitement really going on. :(

Not too worried about the hype generation for launch part of it. They'll release shortly after blizzcon and the WCS global finals. I do worry about the state of the game to keep that interest high though. If it's just HotS with a few more units, it'll die down fast.

Seems to deal terrible terrible damage!

75 single target damage at range 15 wishing that red area, it's not exactly like a siege tank. It's AA attack is 7x2 splash damage and should be good against mutts and carriers interceptors

I actually beat a protoss who was going mass carrier by baiting the interceptors (carrier agro) onto a few units and planting widow mines where the interceptors were swarming, my god it was devastating.

I get that feeling too, which is really disappointing imo. They started out ambitious but they've been slowly patching it back to Heart of the Swarm stuff, often not giving major changes more than a week or two before removing them. Not even trying out TL's proposed economic changes which are hugely supported by the community. It's frustrating. I'll still buy it, I'll still watch, but I was hoping they'd try a lot more big changes because there's real improvements that could be made in SC2.

At least they've promised new social features in the next patch.

I feel like DH has a lot of problems. I don't mind them setting up a separate ladder for instance, but map design has to change drastically to accommodate Zerg (since in ZvP simply denying a base for Zerg is very easy). The other day someone pointed out that with DH you can achieve the same economic state of HotS with fewer workers, meaning you can very quickly reach 3base economic power and then just basically play a game of HotS with fewer worker supply where you don't need to ever go beyond 3 bases because of how long they last.
I do feel that right now Blizzard is being a little cautious, but hopefully once they bring the new Terran unit online we get to see them being more adventurous. 99% of the changes they try don't go into the beta (though I wish they would).

Agreed with this post. I really don't like the missile turret change, especially since the econ makes it so that you can start hitting epic detection oriented cheeses (as protoss) very quickly. I guess they felt that reverting the roach change (for some reason) meant that T doesn't need detection as quickly, but I disagree. When cheeses work I want it to be a combination of 'didn't see it coming' and 'great execution'.

Chat system apparently getting a full revamp in this patch being applied right now. That's good to hear, long as it's change for the better.

Yeah new chat is a nice improvement. It now puts you straight into the general chat channel when you launch the game. Doesn't feel so lonely.

I still wish that it took up more of the screen, but this is a good start.

Now just revamp your Arcade/Custom game lobby to work more like BW.

Quick question GAF....how's SC2's story? I actually liked the first ones story and brood war. Plus the CGI back in the late 90's was so beautiful. Do they still do the same now? I don't play RTS for multiplayer its just not me.

Er well the story is a step or two below the original for sure. Modern Blizzard's corny, predictable, edgelord style of writing is everywhere, and they take a dump on parts of the lore. But I do find it serviceable, not as bad as some people on GAF will say. Apart from that the design of the missions themselves is very good. For me, both campaigns are a lot of fun to play despite the weak writing.

Haven't played a match or watched since the patch yet, probably this weekend. I am glad for another air unit though.

What does everyone think of it so far? I don't like to think that SC2 is ded gaem, but given that I haven't seen any streams with more than 1000 viewers on twitch there really is no hype behind this expansion outside of the community. Sad to see.

got access a week or so ago and I'm still not used to the economy changes. Other than that I really like what I've played so far.
As far as viewership goes, I think that's a result of the beta being unusually early, so most professional/well known players tend to play HoTS instead. I think once ranked play is in we'll see a lot more players streaming void

And they made him a Lord of Cinder. Not for virtue, but for might. Such is a lord, I suppose. But here I ask. Do we have a sodding chance?
"A lot" is not something I'd expect, but rather it'll go back to where HotS was during its launch. Then it'll drop. Again.

So where's the hype for this? Okay so Starcraft 2 didn't reach the highs or epic moments of Starcraft 1/Brood War nor is it a game as well made as its predecessor but story issues and narrative disappointment aside Blizzard still produced a beautiful and excellent game. You would have thought the expansion for arguably the most popular race would have more momentum and interest here. It's not just this thread either. Blizzard announced news on LotV a while back (at Blizzcon) and I recall both previous threads barely reaching two pages.

The proleague in Korea also seems quite strong still. Has Starcraft 2 reduced in popularity? Personally I'm hyped as hell for LotV.

It's a shame, but the game died some time ago to be honest.

I still very much watch and enjoy the proleague/starleague/GSL streams (and I'm subscribed to two of those), because the metagame is constantly changing, and the high-skill cap maked it very entertaining to watch when understood.

I wish the situation would change, but I doubt it.

I doubt any young people in the generation of mobile phone gaming has even touched a RTS game. It would be quite difficult to sell this expansion compared to before.

That aside, I'm still waiting for my Legacy of the Void beta invite from Blizzcon 2014.

I enjoyed it. Fun campaign. Looking forward to seeing the end of the trilogy.

Have they said if Archon mode will be available in the campaign? and hopefully patched into the previous 2 games campaign too ?
Would be a fun way to play the campaign

notice I said 'a lot more', which is not exactly a whole lot considering the amount of people playing right now :)

I'm not sure if there are more cases like this, but twitch gameshows like rocketbeans have segments revolving around Starcraft 2 and around 10.000 viewers during that time.
I sometimes don't see the show correctly labeled as SC2 but 'gameshow' instead during these times, so there are times when the SC2 numbers are deflated by around 10.000 at least...

Edit: To contribute something more on topic - SC2 made me give up on RTSs like SC and C&C, AoE completely. I love planning tactics, but I'm so terrible at actually executing them, I'm losing every game. And the last RTS I played for the story and really liked was WC3 - and the talent at Blizzard of that time is gone sadly.
I like watching good players though, so I'm looking forward to the changes the add-on will introduce.

If you want to play for the story then... better skip it or pretend this is just fanfiction. It is quite disappointing that the story is so boring and juvenile compared to SC/BW.

But the campaign missions are superb, and so far they are my favorite single player campaigns in RTS. Quite enjoyable and entertaining. I give Blizzard a good job for that.

Honestly Blizzard had luck making Warcraft 2/3 and SC (SC 2 for me too). Their previous games where also pretty juvenile and extremely corny/cheesy

Explain please.

They basically slapped Heroes of the Storm chat in there, even the chat window says Heroes lol. Plus no separate chat windows (at least I did not find where to enable them) means tournament organizing is gonna be a nightmare. Also the clock is gone.

They did say it's going to undergo more changes (http://us.battle.net/sc2/en/forum/topic/17604952484#12). I just like that they've moved towards opening up a general chat channel as soon as you enter the game, that's the big feature I wanted for LotV as far as chat goes. Hopefully the rest is added back in as the beta moves along. Leaving the Heroes name there is super lazy though, lol.

I'm starting to lose my patient with Protoss. I cannot beat them at anything, so much that I think I'm going to quit Starcraft 2 all together.

Protoss goes 4 gate mass adept? Can't do a thing since they eat my Marines and SVC like nothing.

Protoss goes 4 gate mass Stalker and Adept? Can't do a thing either.

Protoss goes mass Immortal and adepts? Can't do a thing, eat my Mech army like nothing.

Protoss goes mass air? Can't do anything since Liberators suck against them like all Terran air units.

I can't harass Protoss since they are sitting behind that damn nexus and manage to get out more units than I do in a short time span

Starbow 1.0 is out

Here! Have some hype

What does v 1.0 mean?

This means that we won’t add any new units or abilities into Starbow for a prolonged period. We will still be keeping an eye on balance and playstyle and make smaller changes when needed though, similar to how Blizzard patches vanilla Starcraft 2. (Though our patches will likely be more frequent, especially in the immediate future.)

What is new in 1.0?

Patch notes are here

This is only the latest patch. If you want to catch up on all the patches from the last 6 months or so, have a look here (in chronological order):

Patch 0.500
Patch 0.510
Patch 0.511
Patch 0.520
Patch 0.530
Patch 0.540
Patch 0.550
Patch 0.560
Patch 0.570
Patch 0.600
What else is new?

If you played Starbow last year you may remember a separate ladder client you had to download and install. We realize this was a pain. Now we have an online ladder system which is much easier to set up and use. Instructions are here or here (Korean)

Expansion to Brood War huh?

If you are new to Starbow, but have experience in Brood War, this infographic will help explain how Starbow expands on Brood War.

Stabow is awesome, what can I do to help?

We are still in need of passionate people with programming skills to keep our website managed and the online ladder website up to date. Contact /u/xiphias_ if you have interest in contributing to Starbow as a web developer.

We always welcome constructive feedback on the game balance and design (although larger-scale design changes won’t happen too much for a while). Feel free to share your thoughts on the game in this thread

What do you mean by “for a while”?

If Starbow get’s a decent sized player-base and we see some areas of possible improvement we will work on an expansion to give ourselves room to make these changes. Get ready for “Starbow II: Bow harder!” in the future. ;)

I want to see more cool stuff!

Here’s an awesome compilation of Starbow from the last year. Remember that this footage is from the Beta and may contain things no longer in the game.

The YouTube channel also has an exhaustive library of tournament VODs all organized into neat and tidy playlists. Check those out here.

Thanks for reading!

Starbow would not be possible without the support of the community and the passion of the die-hard Starcraft fans out there who have poured countless volunteer hours into this project. We sincerely hope you give the mod a chance and join us on the ladder at eros.starbowmod.com. We believe all Starbow needs at this point is a committed player-base and some fine-tuning. If you have any interest in the mod at all, now is the time to join in on the fun! Happy Bowin’ everyone!

So I got an invite to the beta recently. But when I start the game I get a warning box telling me that I "don't own SC2 or have run out of gametime". When I dismiss this I am being put on the ingame-login-screen. When I try to login there it tells me "game version mismatch". There are multiple threads in the LotV bug report forum with quite a few people having the same problem but nobody suggested a working solution/workaround. Does anybody here have some insider information on how to fix this?

How is the SC2 Arcade these days? I never got into SC2 because of the travesty that was the "arcade" model compared to the glory days of UMS maps in Brood War, but after all these years I'm left wondering if it ever picked up at all.

Is it still a sorry state of affairs, or is it worth me installing the free version to try out some custom maps?

Lethe82

Banned
It's worth you installing the free version. Hopefully Lotv will overhaul the arcade setup. I mean serious guys, just make the BW USM model the default and then give people separate tabs to do all that other stuff.

I'm starting to really like Liberators. I'm not sure if they are op, but I enjoy the micro based unit interactions, and the Atg attack is fun to see.

also

The Liberator AtG attack will hit larvae - meaning you can plant one (with one or two more for defense) at a zerg production/gas expansion and start impacting their unit production! That and 3 are good for shutting down nydus play since the Zerg units pop out one at a time. Also overlaping targeting areas will make them overkill, useful for killing Ultras (they are great at that)
