As has been said already, this is a no-win scenario in some respects. In fact, the inability to make everyone happy no matter what routes they take with this project has been cited time and again as one of the main reasons it was seemingly never going to happen.
I'm lucky -- I don't much care whether they stay traditional or go action-based. I do care how they handle the flow of the narrative though. FFVII isn't my second favorite video game ever because I really, really like chocobos. (I really, really like chocobos, though.)

I'm okay for overhauls of the battle system as long as it keeps with the spirit of the original.
Action? No maybe not. Not KH. But some sort of real-time system on the overworld that still allows for command selection, I'm ok with.
I definitely don't need random battles and a strict ATB to be happy with this. Though if I got ATB, I wouldn't mind that either.

They'll never make everyone happy.
Personally I could go for something sorta arpgish but i'm not sure how it would work with Barret + Gun Arm, Tifa + Fists etc...something FFX-2ish but allowing the player to move around a combat area as they please while switching between characters etc could be cool.
Actually I'd love that. I want the PS4 release of og VII (can't believe we can say that now) but if i wanted strict ATB/TB then...we have like 10 games in the series for that, a few spin offs and Bravely Default carrying the torch now.
Edit: As for a world map...either a modern version of classic world maps or do something DQ8-esque.
if they do that I'm afraid it won't be "more interesting". I really hope that they don't make any drastic changes. just don't Nomura, fucking-don't. put your emo idiosyncrasies in KH3 and leave FF7 alone.
I'm excited, but I have a hard time believing that this will be a true remake. FF7 is a pretty big game, and to make a 1:1 transition would be a costly endeavor; surely they're going to be taking many liberties here, if not changing the story in any significant way, at least "cutting" the fat.

Please for the love of god SE take this serious. PLEASE. This game is a huge part of growing up for many of us, and was and is a huge part of our lives. The reactions everywhere prove this.
God please SE deliver. I have never openly begged a developer not to mess something up but I feel this remake is too important. I hope for the love of god they are giving this thing the time and budget it deserves

I am so stoked for this game to come out. I heard rumors serveral months ago that ps4 was strictly getting the PC port of FFVII. Does anyone know how long the "timed" release will be? I will be getting it both for PS4 and X1

Along with the obvious visual style change, I think we'll have to accept a lot of changes to the pace, events, mood and gameplay.
20 years will have passed by, I feel like this'll be more of a re-imagining than a straight remake.

From the sounds of things it's not timed. It's multi plat in as much as it'll be PS4 first then PC but Sony are (probably, given the costs involved) co-financing this, and SE are 99% co-developing with CyberConnect2 (.hack games + ff7 mobile game) to get this done.

Agreed completely. This is going to be a different game in some respects, I think, and for some that's going to be a dealbreaker.
Likely won't be getting an XBO version.

It needs to be the full thing. If this thing is going to sell, and is going to live up to expectations no fucking corners can be cut.
This thing NEEDS to be Final Fantasy VII. That is what gamers want. Not some spin off, not some "best of moments" it needs to be the 100% complete experience.
It needs to be a AAA budget massive launch.

Please leave the game close to original. Do not change combat please. Please don't. Just update the graphics.
I'm in if they keep the art direction with HD sprites.

Tbh I think changes in pace are needed. The game feels dated now, as good as it is.

I'll be OK if they make some changes to the combat system. Frankly, it doesn't matter to me if they keep the ATB system (though I really hope it will be something more nervous than the sluggish system of the Final Fantasy games from the PSOne era) or if they make it an Action-RPG.

i was thinking what about all the spin offs and the movie? Crisis Core, Advent Children, etc
they need to add in those elements to the game, since we know just FFVII by itself is not the full story anymore.
also, does anyone know who the voice actor is and if he is supposed to be a character from somewhere?

The shock is that its happening NOW. Yes we've known at some point it would happen. Its always been SE ace up their sleeve. But we've been teased, and trolled so many times people were kind of numb to it.
The shock comes from its real. Like, its no longer some thing that will happen one day who knows when. Its being built NOW

As much as I love the original...what would be the point of them spending 10s of millions on the game to basically upgrade the graphics rather than fully remake it? It probably won't be as "faithful" a remake as ResiREMake was but y'know.
