But honestly, a big reason of why I can't stand to play the original is the battle system. Having a honest-to-god remake that allows me to get the admittedly ridiculous story beats without suffering through days of grinding, random battles, and chocobo breeding is pretty much the only thing I want from this.

You can remove random battles without removing turn based combat. Heck, you do not have to have a separate combat screen for it, it could all talked place in the world. But I do expect there to be time bars and menus for me to choose everyone's attacks.

You can't please everyone. The story, characters, art and environment are what made this game what it is and it's all I care about.

Whether they go turn based or something like XV (assuming full party control), I don't care. Pre rendered or 3D, don't care.

Just give us that world and story in a modern package, whatever that means for you Nomura.

I'll be honest, I would prefer this to be nothing but a graphical update. I love the ATB and and I love how VII plays. Really psyched either way though. Hoping they don't mess with the story! Keep the camp moments in too!

I take it as the following

PS4 - YES. No brainer.

PC - Maybe, let's wait and see how XV performs.

XB1 - Maybe, lets wait and see how XV performs.

It's pretty clear that the game will launch first on PS4 before going anywhere else. Hard for Sony to give an exclusivity window when no one has an idea when this may come out. Also, the game was not announced for Xbox one yet. For all we know, it could just be PS4 and PC.
This is what I mean, though.

Is it a wait and see? Are they making an XBO version, just later? Is there no plan at the moment?

I don't have an XBO but I hate this kind of stuff.

When I heard remake, I'm thinking about a total new experience. It means change in gameplay and story. It will not be the same game

What the heck lol. Change the gameplay AND story and it's simply not a FF VII remake anymore, it's a new game taking place inside the FF VII universe. Makes no sense.

I'd rather they keep things mostly the same - ATB battle system, same (though maybe re-localized) story, etc. Just add new stuff. New quests, new monsters, new items and materia and so on.

Final Fantasy VII Remake will be completly different from the original. I don't see it turn based and I don't even know if they will be able to make a worldmap with an airship etc.

The story will be the same (or somewhat), but thanks (or not) to spinoffs, it will be a little bit different. About the gameplay as I said, I don't see it turn based. I think it will be something like FFX2 with FFXII

Think of SE's insane sales expectations. A turn based combat game isn't going to captivate a large enough audience, not going to happen.

Probably going to be another Street Fighter deal. I see it coming to PC, but Xbox not really.

That won't be the case. They spent the entire conference highlighting "console exclusive", "console debut", "first on" etc. They would have made a big deal if it was, but instead it is just "first on" while the other FF World thing is "console exclusive" so they are out on other platforms

I really don't think even Sony or square know the answer to that. Maybe Sony is trying to work out a full exclusivity deal but square insists on other platforms. It may just be caught in limbo for now until they decide more finer points.

Think of SE's insane sales expectations. A turn based combat game isn't going to captivate a large enough audience, not going to happen.

But completely gutting the original game and changing too much will create some huge backlash. If this is an action RPG, square messed up big time. BIG TIME.

They will handle this like they did with FF13.
Finishing development on the lead platform and then port it to the other systems. But this time the sales of Type 0 and FF15 will decide if this game gets ever ported to another system. Chances are right now very small though.

The public won't care, they've moved past turn based. This has to appeal to people that don't know FF7 also.

And yet Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster seemed to sell well enough, and those games aren't nearly the fan favorite that FF7 is.

Then why even do a remake? Don't we all sit here and say that the best final fantasy games where I the past (turn based) and the modern games are lifeless? If they remake FF7 and make it just like ff15, that's a problem. This remake should be for people who want a beautiful version of FF7 the GAME, not just the world and story with completely different gameplay.

Gutting all the original games gameplay defeats the purpose of remaking it. Also, when it comes to dev time, it would be more cost efficient and timely to do a turn based battle system.

There's no way it'd be the exact same battle system, surely. Even if they go with ATB it'll be different.

I agree with others who've said it's more about the setting, atmosphere and characters for me. I'm interested to see how they handle the gameplay regardless of how they do it.

I want the classic combat with additions and balance tweaks, and I don't mind random encounters but the one thing I think FFXIII did really well (I think that XIII did a lot well, but let's ignore that for now) that its sequels missed out on is the seamless transition from cutscene to boss fight (Palumpolum spoilers). Just picture when the guard scorpion turns up, fighting Rufus on top of the Shinra building, the final fight against Sephiroth.

It'll be delicious.

That is probably more of where they will go. Cut scenes done in engine, tweaks like the summon animations will all be there and glorious but also skipable. , w-item dup and the pandoras box bug will be fixed. Combat, encounters, and material system will all be basically the same, although a few new things and a few nerfs. The minigames like snowboarding, bike, and everything with the golden saucer (esp chocobo racing) may be much different though. I wouldn't be surprised if they add multiplayer to golden saucer events.

This is a remake, not a reboot.. the core of the game will stay the same.

Shit not that simple for legacy title, its potentially anger the fanbase thus making bad press, a lot less impulse sales will impacted with negativity across social media..

Making it super awesome God of War clone game wouldn't resulting bigger sales too with fanbase bad mouthing it.

The fact of the matter is that if you want to play 3rd party Japanese games on consoles then you should own a PS4 because that's where they'll be. I wouldn't hold my breath for an Xbox version of a game that has always been on PlayStation and PC.

Anyway, I really really hope Nomura keeps the battle system turn-based and Uematsu returns once again for the soundtrack. They played the "Beyond the Wasteland" track in the trailer before the FFVII opening so I have high hopes of him returning.

Hi, I'm nortonff. I spend my life going into threads to say that I don't care about the topic of the thread. It's a really good use of my time.
Isn't that the point of a remake though? To reimagine it in current generation. I'm happy they're doing it at all as long they keep story and setting the same.

Maybe we'll get a tiny smidge more updates at the SE conference later? after everything that has happened, I'm now a believer.

Totally forgot about the SE conference. Hyped again. They have so many great games to show.
DX will be amazing.

The SE press conference is today right?

Maybe we can get some clarification on what "First on PS4" means. First on PS4 then other consoles and PC? First on PS4 then only PC at a later time?

I interpret "First on PS4" as it's the only console receiving the game when it launches a million years from now. Other consoles/PC are to get it on a later date. I mean, releasing it on the first PS4 makes sense since that's where the FF sales are with the evidence of Type-0 HD's 80/20 split.

It's hard to imagine them releasing it on Xbox One a set time later after. Especially since the lion share of the console market is on the PS4 this generation.

Part of me feels like I woundn't be surprised if it's only PS4, then a year later PC. Another part of me wants to roll my eyes thinking "ooh Square is gonna be Square" and release it on Xbox One a year (or whatever the time frame is) later thinking they are gonna sell gangbusters.

Square was dumb enough to take the MS money to make Tomb Raider a "Holiday Exclusive"

I need to see the receipts that people have moved beyond turn-based combat. I also would like to see them for "the game has to appeal to people who don't know one of the biggest selling video games of all times that has also had ports to several systems since then."

If your game needs to appeal to more than 20 million people, you have made an unsustainable game.

Not that it will show again, but everyone don't forget to watch SE's conference today. They could at least talk about it. Remember that hype video had a lot of spoiler tags in it? Just saying.

At the same time, if it's too far away from the original's combat then fans are going to get pissed. The people buying this want FF7, not FF15 with FF7's story/characters.

I'm guessing it'll be menu/turn-based with battles happening on the same screen as exploration, like Chrono Trigger or FF12.

It's great and all that the remake is happening but I don't get the massive fan fare over a cg trailer, as far as we know, there might be only the slightest graphical upgrade.

I think it's a wait and see thing. Like, didn't Type-0 HD completely bomb on the XB1? They could just be waiting to see how the tides go with FF15 and their other RPG properties before committing to it.

I'm so glad they're making a remake. After all these years, when even SE said it would be a lot of work. Boom! It is coming. It was inevitable. All I hope is that it comes within this decade. lol

I will definitely watch, maybe they'll show some FFXV and KH3 as well.

what did she said?

It's kinda weird they named it "PS4 first" and not "PS4/PC" only like SF5.

Maybe SE is trying to get MS put some money on it?

Or possibly, the PC version is indeed launching later, so the only place to play it for a while will be the ps4. SF5 on the other hand, may be launching simultaneously on ps4/pc (and if not simultaneously, maybe they didn't mention it because they gave emphasis to cross-platform play)

Pretty much this. I bet Type-0 was an eye opener for Square.
