They took away a selling point from FF15 for me when they changed directors and redid the gameplay. This could be a chance to bring it back in a different game.

Was this also when it turned from Versus 13 to 15? Because dropping the 13 name from the title was a selling point for that game, in my opinion

Regarding combat, they should update the tutorial text for this boss fight with the Hashimoto gif too:

That was my first thought, but I could see them being Shinra soldiers too.

I think they're just soldiers, which is fine, it's the realism art style from Advent Children. No doubt people will complain that the art style isn't the same as the original, but that just wouldn't work for a modern remake.

Same way the Lord of the Rings films made so many departures from the books. It was better for that interpretation. The originals are still intact for enjoyment, nothing is being replaced here, it's just a second way for people to enjoy a fantastic story/game.

Just realised, this is gonna sell PS4's in Japan isn't it?

maybe it will bring back a much more older audience. FF fan groups are filled with people born after FF7 was even released. If anything let it bring back the fan base it once had.

They had to do something, am I right?

A reason to get back into video games. They haven't forgotten everyone.

I love FF, but some people don't treat it like Disney or Bugs Bunny either.

FF7 was a gigantic game, how the hell are they going to remake this? This will be multi disc blu Ray release with a crazy high budget

I can't fathom it

Hey guys, maybe this thing will fix all of the crap introduced in the FF7 Compilation shit, like by announcing that crap is no longer canon.

I hope they will develop the game just like FFXV with a lot of feedback from fans.
That's the only way to go imho with this giant of a project.

Also, I wonder how many PS4s will be sold by the end of this gen. Insane.

are there any examples of remakes in the past few years where they've completely changed the gameplay mechanics/battle system?

Not exactly recent but the Tales of Phantasia Narikiri Dungeon remake went from a turn based system to one of the best iterations of the series trademark LMBS with a job system added.

Also Tales of Destiny went from this

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rUnyWj2AT3g

to this

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vpRP75baBYE.

Maybe in that case you couldn't say it was a complete change but its still an evolution of the battle system based on the most recent games in it's series. So if the FF7 remake followed that pattern it would follow up on the recent games and not what it was back then.

More Kitase than anyone. It's a damn shame the man has essentially retired (i.e. producer).

I don't blame him. I have to imagine the Producer (and Exec Producer) role is a bit more comfortable.
The guy absolutely busted his ass directing FFVI, VII, and VIII - and if my memory is correct, it took a toll on his health.

I do hope he gets back in the Director's chair again, but I won't be surprised if he never does.

I like how SE acknowledges the delays/waiting and pokes fun at itself in the trailers, similar thing happened with XV. Feels like they're turning things around.

They should totally do a commercial targeting salary men who have left gaming due to adulthood. Pile on the nostalgia. Have an ad that starts with a kid playing FFVII on a PS1. 20 years later this kid is now a salary man with a family, tired and spending too much time at work. One day he steps off the train and sees an advertisement for VIIR. Next scene has him enjoying the game, with his young children at home. Have lots of narration about going back to a better, enjoyable time.

I never read about the health thing but yeah Kitase originally didn't even want to direct video games, he wanted to be a film editor.

No because even after the name change they still talked about how it was supposed to have a similar feel and essentially be an evolution of KH gameplay. Not sure when the switch actually happened but they didn't mention it until almost 2 years after the name change/

Maybe the catch for this remake is that it's actually a trilogy! One game separated into 3. To be released every year for three years! That's how they're going to meet the 2017 deadline!
#BadIdeasThatYouDontwantsetohear

I have to keep toning down my enthusiasm because SE might disappoint so I keep coming uo with possible ways that they can screw up, in the spirit of anticipating for the worse. And I'm not even as enthusiastic as most of you guys. I didn't cry nor scream out loud

The red goggles lead me to believe they definitely might be Shinra troops; maybe President Shinra's direct special force unit?

I see it now. They are just lacking the helmets. Though, seeing them, they look like a cross between Shinra MP and Corneo's lackeys:

One thing I hope is that they aren't above in including some of the more stranger monsters in the FFVII universe. Stuff like the Ghirofelgo, Hungry, Ghost Ship, Devil Ride, those Russian egg dolls and evil Jokers that ride on spinning card platforms.

If they made aeris/aerith dead contextual, would that please everyone?

Like in a defeat sephiroth as a boss right now/ at least dont die instantly kind of way?

If you do badly in the fight she dies, if you do decently she survives.

*shrug* I dont even know

first page nailed it!

so do we what engine this game will be using????

The speculation is that this is one of the three games that CyberConnect2 said that they were working on. They described one game as

- UE4
- RPG
- Large scale development
- Developed for a worldwide audience
- Photorealistic
- Physical based rendering
