Rise of the Tomb Raider: Preview and Technical Analysis (NX Gamer)

BeforeU

Oft hope is born when all is forlorn.
Where has someone shit on the Xbox One version? All I have seen are observations that the game is not meeting the targeted specs right now. That happens for ALL games. You are being hyper-sensitive.

So whats the targeted spec? Were you in the dev team? 900p is disgusting so will you be playing at 4k on PC master race? Or whatever PS4 will do will be godlike for you?

Maybe some GAFers could pixel count it. I doubt NXGamer would get it wrong. My guess is Brian is referring to the output resolution (which is always up-scaled to 1080p), and not the native rendering resolution, which I think is very misleading by the way. Unless NXGamer got it wrong. But pixel counting the difference between 900p and 1080p isn't something that is generally confused.

I've added it for now, and I'll change it if anyone wants to check by counting.

Interesting response….

Presumably the one's the dev's told us they were targeting? Eg, 1080p/30fps. Personally I think 900p would be fine as well.

Pixel counting a game with heavy post processing can be relatively difficult and that's before factoring in compression.

I'll wait for the PS4 version.... I never said. This game looks great. A bummer it's releasing the same day as Fallout but Tomb Raider will get my full attention first!

Man, I remember a recent Arkham Knight DF thread where like two comments about being ok with the Xbox One version blew up into a huge shitstorm about how tech threads should be purely about the tech, and not what version of a game you may be getting.

Good times.

This does not look like 1080p to me, I thought they were going 900p to target 60fps or run unlocked since it's the same definitive edition engine. There are instances in that trailer where the cutscenes/sizzle looks a higher rez than 900p though, but gameplay does not look native as per the playable demo.

There was a bit of dynamic scaling in TR-DE on the XB1, so I'm pretty sure it's the same thing here.

Really excited for this. Replaying TR on Xbone now and it's reminded me how good it was. Definite day one purchase for me, it's just a shame I'll have to balance it with Fallout 4.

Hopefully they'll hit 1080 on launch, but I don't mind 900 really. A fun game is fun regardless.

What was his point ? Enlighten me.

1. Port begging - No its widely understood its coming to other things was how i understood....Maybe I am wrong...
2. Shitting on XB1 version - He did not do that. Game looks fine to me as well.
3. I will get it for Ps4 comments - Cant see what the issue is here, just an intention to buy.

Game looking good. I like snow. Seems more stealth focus in this game.

Remember when tech threads were about discussing the technical aspects of the game?

Good times.

You're crazy if you think 900p would get the game to 60 fps with all the added effects we're seeing here. Also, I don't believe TR had dynamic scaling. It just changed to 900p in cut-scenes.

You doubt a guy that's gotten resolution wrong in the past could be wrong again? OK.

- Dynamic day and weather system
- Certain animals only available at certain times of the day
- Fully deformable snow, snow tracks can be used to stalk or be stalked, but given the dynamic weather, tracks can be covered up

These are the most interesting to me, can't wait to play it.

looks good. Will almost certainly get on xbox one providing there are no terrible performance issues, but it is looking good at the moment. I really enjoyed the previous game and I don't want to wait for a later PS4/PC version. I'm not interested in Asassins Creed or Halo so this is one of my few big holiday releases

I'm hoping they keep it at 900p. I don't want assets and graphical effects to be turned down to get it to 1080p.

In which analysis did he get the resolution wrong in the past?

I do recall one instance, where he said the game was 900p and while it was indeed subnative, just about 900p, he got the directions wrong(1300x1000 something). I want to say Mortal Kombat but i can't say for sure.

Yep, and then he used the lame excuse "Well I wasn't really doing a thorough analysis at the time."

I'm sorry, but when I watched the conference, videos of this game it was obviously 1080p. I've got this video on my big TV now, and it's obvious.

So based on that, taking anything this guy says with a grain of salt.

Yea, I thought the Gamersyde version looked crisp too, but then again, I think the same of Batman Arkham Knight.

Not going to lie, I think the IQ on Batman on the X1 is appalling. I thought it wasn't even 900p when I first saw it. It's a mix of jaggies and vaseline.

Yea, it's got a boatload of post processing dumped on it, but often times, especially indoors, you can see the crispness of objects even with all that post processing. Brick walls, chalkboards with stuff on them, for example, look really good for 900p.

The snow tracks are like another player on an iPad playing make snow tracks for the player in real time with your finger. Looks weird and not in sync with her movements.

I do love snow environments. Hope they have neat game play ideas and less of a similar roller coaster ride of the last game. It all looks terribly similar right now.

True but the snow tracks still look better than in any other game that I've seen.

Well, engines get better, things become more efficiently done with maturity. Remember how taxing tressfx was at first, here it is now on the beard of Tenzin (Jonah) and on animals. TRDE was capped at 30fps on XB1 at 1080p for gameplay, same engine here...scaling it back to 900p they can leave it unlocked just like the PS4 version of TRDE, they won't get a rock solid 60fps, but I really don't think they will want to do 720p 60fps for PR purposes at this point. It's either 900p unlocked or 1080 30fps.

You doubt a guy that's gotten resolution wrong in the past could be wrong again? OK.
He never made a definitive statement, he said it was in the ball park, and he was right. The DF guy for F1 however said that it was 900p on the XB1 and went on a whole apologist tirade about how he doesn't see much difference between 1080p on PS4 and the 900p which he thought the XB1 version was running at, typical really.....even if it was truly (900p), he would have said the same thing in typical DF fashion... but yeah, the resolution was higher than 900p and therefore crisper as per evidence.....the writer was so quick to to minimize the difference between 900p and 1080p that he didn't even bother to think that it was running at a higher resolution on XB1. Hook line and sinker....

As per MKX, it's 1344*1080 on XB1, that's pretty much par with 900p pixel wise, so NXgamer was right in his assumption, his eyes are definitely sharper and better than the F1 DF guy. There are only 11,520 pixels between 1344*1080 and 1600*900. On the flipside there's a 115,200 pixel difference between 900p and 1440*1080p. One is much larger and should more of a noticeable difference.

Somehow, I suspect some people are just waiting in the wings to tear NXgamer a new piehole if he gets a stat wrong, quite funny tbh.

the irony of you posting this when you literally just jumped out of the wings to drag DF in a thread that has nothing to do with them

Facial animation tech is so damn impressive, small muscular naunces really sell her actions, she's doesn't really need to say much with how they're implementing this. And damn it looks pretty, hope I can finish Witcher 3 and Batman before this hits. Day 1 regardless.

Yea, I think he mentioned in the video that the facial animations capture uses that new spray technology instead of those dots placed manually.

Yup its called Mova.
As she explained on her Twitter account, whereas normal motion capture uses dots placed on the actor's face for points of reference (about 90 points, according to Luddington), Mova, a performance facial capture company for feature film and games, uses a fluorescent paint that is sprayed all over, resulting in more than 7000 points of reference.

This allows for a much more realistic capture, Luddington says, and can conveniently also only be seen under a blacklight.

Walking in deep snow is difficult enough as it is, but Lara is dragging her legs through it with every step which would be exhausting very quickly. Snow also doesn't displace to nearly that amount when walking through it, which makes it look even stranger.

But it can't be an easy effect to get right and I'm glad they're doing it. As weird as it looks, it looks even weirder in camp when the effect is missing.

Not siding with either sides here, but DF also got the resolution of the XB1 version of F1 2015 wrong. So I guess we can't trust DF either.

Yea, how exactly does pixel counting work? Do you feed a computer program a direct capture and it tells you how many pixels it sees?

What's funnier are people that feel the need to defend him when he clearly gets stuff wrong, and yet can't wait to jump all over DF when they do. Agendas everywhere.

Pretty much.

You're damn right I don't. I trust my own eyes. I read these to determine if there's major framerate issues before I buy a game. Helps me decide if I should wait for patches, buy now, or pass completely.

Yea, how exactly does pixel counting work? Do you feed a computer program a direct capture and it tells you how many pixels it sees?

It's more basic than that, it's literally getting in close with a native res image on an LCD and counting pixels. Liabe Brave did a post though, which may help.

What's funnier are people that feel the need to defend him when he clearly gets stuff wrong, and yet can't wait to jump all over DF when they do. Agendas everywhere.

Then pull them up directly, or shove them on ignore. These 'ooh, some people... ' posts are just as annoying.

Imagine how boring this place would be if both consoles had identical specs. We'd be discussing the actual merits of the game itself. Actual game discussion.

No we wouldn't. I just got out of a thread where people were praying for the death of Origin... which runs on the same damn hardware.

There's nothing to stop that form happening in the relevant thread/OT/wherever though.
