Mafia 3 Reveal Trailer (Hangar 13/Take-Two, 2016, PC/PS4/XB1)

Even if it was called Italian Mafia, they could still tell a story involving other ethnicities. They don't have to be made men to be the protagonists.

And if you're really disappointed and wanted something different, don't buy it. There are a million other games you can play. You are entitled to nothing.

A million other games about the Italian mafia hardly? . I think that's why people are down about the reveal these games seemed like Italian mob movies in game form. I know I was excited at the thought of a more modern mafia game in Ny or Chicago In The 70s. this is out of left field but as long as the writing is good I'm all in.

I didn't really have a problem with the new protagonists race games need more diverse protagonists. I'm still hyped for the game as I enjoy any good crime films regardless of the race or crime family it features.

Have never played a Mafia game but this looks VERY interesting to me!

I like that it is about the Black Mafia, seems different lol I'm gonna keep my eye on this game.

would you feel this way if it was a white character distinct from the one we played in Mafia II?

just poking fun, lol.

Id rather continue to play as Vito yes. They set up a good story for him, I wanted to continue that.

If he was like a newcomer who had to work his way up from the ground up into the italian mob Id still be dissapointed.

But some people are just happy to label other people as racist if they dont conform to their views or opinions.

What was the line about family? It sounds like "Do you wish us a goddamn last name" but that doesn't make sense to me.

Oh, well by all means that settles it then! Would you like your pass emailed, or a laminated card sent through the mail?

Vito is in the game. If you're that unhappy about a black protagonist and not continuing the 'Italian' story line as you see fit, make your own damn game. This is such a thinly veiled argument
Well!

I thought I was edgy in my earlier 'instructional perspective' comments. You might have just made me blush.

Not my cup of tea. Looks too much like an open world shooter instead of a real maffia game.

And yes to italian mobsters please. Not interested in the black maffia.

I agree with Red Hood here. Does everyone need to be excited? Nope. I was hoping they would explode the options they gave us with Vito and make it into a full fledged game instead of just story stuff.

vito sucked
morty sucked
franky sucked
italian mobster cliches are rote as fuck. you mad.

Re: Black Protagonist

In the interview video in the OP, you can see one of the themes of the game is moving past the romanticized image of the Mafia, because by the 70s it had been exposed as a corrupt organization willing to hurt anyone and do anything. They specifically mention the heroin trade, for example.

Well, one of the key facts of the heroin trade was that the Mafia was frequently trafficking and handing off product to the Black Mafia and other black criminal organizations, on top of whomever else they dealt with.

The title of the game is not "The White Mafia", it's "Mafia." Why not the Black Mafia or focusing on how the Mafia deals with its extremely volatile and racist relationship with the black community?

The negativity on display in this thread is unbelievable. So we have a black protagonist in a mafia game, big deal. The Italian mafia will be in this game. If you guys are paying attention they are the driving force behind this plot. It's not like they are doing away with them. I can't wait to see how this game turns out.
Black man in Italian mafia, has no much sense to me. Really I don't get this choice. Mafia people are quite racist/elitist in the choice of their men, just for their original roots, if I'm not wrong.

I loved the second game in the franchise. The gunplay, the driving, the story. Sure, the city was empty, there was nothing to do outside the missions. Still, the short look into the new setting is exciting. And that soundtrack...

did you even watch the trailer?

To comment on something about the actual game and trailer. That was a well done trailer cgi or not which I can't say the same for Final Fantasy XV. I got a good sense of tone and the setting. The gameplay that was shown piqued my interest just slightly. It does look too much like other games in the genre, but I'll keep a tab on it. Also, this is one of the few games out there with a light skin brotha in the lead role. Usually on the rare occassion when we get a black character he's always medium brown or dark skin. Light skin dudes exist too.

This game isn't based on the Italian Mafia, it's based on the Black Mafia.

That it has no much sense to you (and others) should be something that makes you want the game even more. A side that not many (if this thread is to go by) know about.

That right there made the title even more captivating to me, we now get to see a different angle of the mafia. Black people were also a part of those type of movements.

Hahaha I aint mad. Dumbasses itt who are clearly out to label others as racists are mad.

i wont label you as anything. italian mafia romanticizing is corny, and well worn ground. mafia 2 has many sections involving high-key racism

mafia 2 had an opportunity to tell a more tonally accurate story and instead doubled-down on lame stereotypes

and this is why actually reading about or viewing the aforementioned content for context is essential folks

Are we sure he's black? He looks like some kinda Spanish..I'd be ok with that.
He does look more Spanish than black, to be honest. But we still have comments like "I have no interest in playing a black people Mafia game", which is a racist thing to say either way.

Racialized and thereby politicized identities will unfortunately do that. :(

And that is really too bad, because the concept of the game is so fresh and amazing
It's embarrassing. I doubt I would have been as interested if it was just another same old same old Mafia. Mafia 3 went from "eh.." to "I'm hyped" for me. This actually looks like it's going to be fresh and new, and if it makes these people feel any better, he's about as light-skin black guy (if he is black) as they come.

Edit: So he is mixed.

Really? They've re-branded 3 times now, but I can't find any mention on their website. And as far as I know Daniel Vara and a lot of 2K Czech fled the company after Mafia 2.

EDIT:

Hangar 13 is based in San Fransisco

http://www.hangar13games.com/studio.html

I found this

2K has finally revealed the name of their new studio in Novato, California today as Hangar 13. Formerly 2K Czech, developer of the Mafia series, the studio at Novato was created after 2K shut down their offices in Prague and relocated the team at 2K Czech to the new studio.

Mafia 2 was probably close to, if not the biggest letdown in my whole time gaming. Dramatic shake up might be just what the series needs.

If you want Italian mafia so bad nothing is stopping you from popping in a movie or boardwalk Empire or the sopranos or playing older gta titles dealing with mafia. I am completely ignorant over black mafia and I'm excited at a game to explore them. Now all I'm missing is a proper colombian cartel game/movie.

Thank you, this premise has me extremely interested. The setting and time period is ripe for a great story if they put in the work. I'm from New Orleans so that's icing on the cake.

I cant tell if you mean actual Mafiosos or Mafia fans. ;)

He's talking about Italian mobsters being notoriously racists and I'm sure that will play into this story line. The more I read about this the more interesting it sounds.
It was a commentary of supposed fans of the genre showing their bias while at the same time failing to understand the culture they pretend to be fans of.

Its funny that people cant picture minorities in Werewolf-infested Victorian London, but connection between the Sicilians and the black community is an actual docummented thing.

How is it corny and well worn in games? There have barely been any good games about the italian mob like ever.

Even those shows BE especially showed the mob interacting with the black mafia.

Heck one of the best charcaters in BE was Chalky.
