Thats not what I said lol. Thats not why Im bummed about the game cause he is black.

Maybe I cant relate to all your accusations of racism cause im not from the us. Shit seems bad over there and maybe try being not so defensive and think that anyone who doesnt think a black mc works well in a mafia game or whatevs is a racist asshole.

Being disappointed in the reveal means Im not allowed to respond/post?

you said you were disappointed because you weren't interested in the black mafia. do they have black people where you live?

Actually the point is you have 50 million games to play as a white lead character..... but one game with a black character pops up (Dude light as hell too! Look like Drake skintone) and it gets skipped overall because "My Italian Mafia" reasons....

God people make this country so shitty with their mindsets

I think the most annoying thing to me are the people who refuse to accept that forms of media based around the Mafia don't have to have Italians be the main focus/characters. Like I said earlier, it's not like the Italian Mafia are the only Mafia that exsist.

The Godfather movie are the story of one family. The Mafia games are just about organized crime groups in general, whit extremely slight connections between the games. I think
you kill the main character from Mafia 1 in Mafia 2 and that's it.

This is a setting I didn't even know about until this reveal trailer so I commend 2K Czech for that choice alone. It's something that could take a very new and fresh look at an era of the Mafia most people probably don't know much about. Classical era Italian mafia has been done. A lot.

Should have renamed the series Gangsters just so people would shut up about Mafia = Italian.

"But violent black man out for revenge is sooooo cliché"

giphy.gif

This gif pretty much suggest where we might be going, though not 100%.

I mean, when I clicked on the thread for mafia 3, yeah, I expected it to be about a white dude in the italian mob, as that was the subject of the prior 2 games. That didn't translate to outrage however, though I won't say I was particularly attached to the traditional "godfather" italian mob setting in the first place. I'm just happy that a series that in my opinion was pretty boring is trying to shake things up, even if we've yet to see that translate to the gameplay in any way.

There is a Black Mafia.
The game deals with things like the end of the romanticizing of the Mafia and things like the heroin trade.
The heroin trade had an extremely prominent Black criminal organization element to it.

So far, the actual problem is that there is no reason anyone has given yet why a Black protagonist would NOT work. History says not only does it work, but if they're going to deal with this element of Mob history it's essential.

Because I personally was looking forward to continue playing as Vito and the inner workings of the italian mob.

I never said black mob didnt work, just that im not as interested in it as Italian mobs.

Im.not denying there was a black mafia. A game centered around it could be cool. Im just disappointed that they made Mafia 3 that game.

There were plenty of different mobs. I have no interest in playing russian mobsters either. I find the italian mob culture the most interesting of the mafia's im familiar with ( next to yakuza )

Oh well guess im just a racist to some. Whatevs.

" Hey, let's make The Godfather 4 a romantic comedy about an ageing man who is a young teenager's godfather and they all go on silly adventures, because, you know, the word "godfather" means the same thing here as well "

I couldn't come up with a more silly comparison, but it's basically the same thing.

criminal mafia doing criminal mafia stuff = criminal mafia stuff doing criminal mafia stuff
godfather =/= godfather (alt. definition; archaic)

I know they are set in totally different eras and areas, but any homages to Hoolum would be great.

I got high hopes for this game. Hopefully Hangar 13 exceeds it.

I'm siding with the people being heavily disappointed in this. Mafia is about Italian Americans and specifically the actual mafia/costra nostra Goodfellas style. But now I'm seeing a white guy that stereotypically looks like a redneck, a black woman with an afro and a black man. I can't exactly make out the fourth person, but he looks more "regular" Caucasian than Italian. Unless the story is about the Italian that got killed in the trailer and the main story revolves around his family hunting down the four people in the trailer. But otherwise heavily disappointed and definitely not "Mafia".

I love quotes like this. Makes me realize that for all the so-called progress that's been made, there's still a long way to go. Hell, you could take the San Andreas reveal thread pull quotes and place them in here, the salt would be just as tasty. Vito is still in the story, it would appear - so your ties to the previous Mafia games are present.

tl;dr - stay mad

I really hyped for this, but people being disappointed because it's not the expected Italian Mafia doesn't equate to racist mindset.

I was interested before, but the trailer certainly has this game on my radar. NOLA is such a great setting for an open world game.

The racist comments remind me of when GTA:SA was announced and no one "could relate to being a black gangbanger". This is the exact reason why I have to "relate" to the same muscle bound, strong jawed white guy in every game.

The game is dealing with the Italian Mafia too. Vito is in the game as far as I can tell.

Look you can not be interested in it, that's your right. But everyone needs to really stop arguing it doesn't make sense or that it's somehow not "Mafia" or whatever. I mean, odds are the reason you're not interested in the Black Mafia is because you have not the first clue what they're all about. You probably have never even touched on any of their history. You have as much experience with their story as you do, say, the extended history of Aboriginals.

So how do you know you're not interested in them? They can and have dealt with many of the same things as every other major criminal organization, and many of the same themes can be adequately addressed by these groups as well.

SQUAD RATINGS
- Redneck (too stereotypical! white people can have their feelings hurt too! we aren't all rednecks)
- Black man (nope)
- Black woman (and with an afro? wow this game is so racism)
+ Normal guy (definitely the whitest of the bunch)

Final evaluation: 1/4, would not play

Promising tidbit, but I'm being a bit cynical in also reading it as "don't worry, we won't focus too much on race (for those of you made uncomfortable by that)"

I see it more as they want him to be more than just 'the black guy'. This is more than likely their attempt to make him a multi-faceted individual.

This thread is making work go by so fast. Some people are upset there expectations weren't met but at least give the game a chance. I think we get some amazing games when series break away from some of the per convinced notions people have about them. As a mixed black person people have no clue how you get it from all sides. I hope this game has the balls to show the racism from all sides.

Or...some people wanted another Italian mafia game.

I'm fine with this but people wanting another La Cosa Nostra game aren't bad people. Of course they worked with all sorts of people as associates, allies, etc. but if people want another game about the most popular mafia, I don't blame them. I'd like to think most of them would be upset with an Irish mafia game as well.

I'm excited but I'm not going to call others racist for wanting the game to continue focusing on the Italian mafia instead of featuring them. Hell, I want a game about Chalky White.

If you're a Mafia fan, you were gonna play Mafia 3 anyway and would be happy to get a sequel announced like this.

Dev changing characters for sequels happens everyday. Every damn day. Why is this game the sole harbinger of doubt when it comes to not keeping the main character?

Nobody kicked shit about Dishonored adding a female character.......

But nah, I need that Italian Mob though

What made Mafia for me was the serious take on mob related stories as a contrast to games like GTA set in a great city. Even though I really like the Italian mafia as a setting, if they make this game as serious and deep as the original, I'm looking forward to it.

As an Italian, I gladly pass up this opportunity to be marketed as a people associated with organized crime again. *passes the torch*

If Vito is in this, it's going to deal with the Italian Mafia though...?
