The trailer for this month's update is out and it looks like the new area we're getting this month will be Escha - Sky.

Could have posted the link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oeqOvP71M_0

I guess it also has some hard mode Adoulin mission fights, and in addition to job twaks and new Adoulin quests, looks like the new Rhapsodies missions have references to the missions (or mission girls...) from all the major previous expansions.

I wonder about that Balamor scene... I pretty much finished Adoulin already, but am yet to flag the last cutscene, as I'm unsure about which ring to pick (Adoulin ring for my MK, or the one with BLU magic skill for my infrequently-used BLU?...). I may need to decide before the update lands...

noooooo what have i done, i reactivated my account after years, updated the game for 14 hours straight and im now on my way to windy (sylph) wohoooo :)

atm im totally lost, ls is dead :(, lots of new content... it will take days to get into the game again xD

Just found this on reddit, which isn't in the official patch notes: Now all the RoEs for the final missions (three nations, RoZ, CoP, ToAU, WotG) come with +10% CP bonus attached. So while we didn't get any rhapsody KIs with CP bonus this time, we can get an extra +70% if your missions are up to date.

Speaking of which, time to get off my ass and finish up missions!

EDIT: They added new rings that have the same bonus as Echad/Trizek Rings, not sure how many charges they have or where to get them, though.

I'm reading online that you can't start up the next Rhapsody mission if you haven't finished CoP yet, and there's a break point about halfway through where you need to have cleared WotG. There might also be a point where you need to have finished ToAU. So I guess this next week for me is going to be mission week.

I'm actually most of the way through it, thankfully. (those 'wait for JP midnight' breaks are awful) I got up to the BC where Naja fights that blue mage with you, but couldn't clear it in MNK or SAM since I didn't have AoE and Naja dies super fast. But I just got BLU leveled up a couple days ago, so I'm gonna grab some good AoE nukes and bull rush through the rest of the missions.

I had gotten up to the Chimera BC fight with Shantotto helping you before I quit the game all that time ago, so I don't remember the start of the storyline too well, but the stuff I've played through since has been good.

One thing that disappoints me playing through and looking at the missions on wikis is that SE never gave us a cool area unlock like they used to. It was such a great feeling to make it through a tough mission fight and finally get Sky access. Ditto for Sea. But later expacs don't have stuff like that. I was looking at the mission descriptions for the Adoulin stuff and saw 'unlocks Leafalia access' by one of the missions and got all excited, but when I finally got there I discovered its just a room inside a tree.

How big is FFXI world compared to FF14+expansion or even WoW?

Is the game going to drop PS2 support anytime soon? will there be any benefits?

I always wanted to play this game but never got around it, it seems the game is in its twilight now :(

What kind of experience can I expect from starting now?

Haven't played XIV for more than 15 minutes and haven't played WoW since launch, so I can't answer those.

Is the game going to drop PS2 support anytime soon? will there be any benefits?

PS2 and Xbox 360 support ends next March. There's going to be no benefit. The game is made with PS2 development kits. The final update to the game is going to be in November. After that, it's just a wait until they shut the game down completely. The game is in its last days. It's not going to be around much longer. If you want to play it, you better do it now while you can.

They're dropping console support in March of next year.

The game is incredibly solo friendly now. EXP boosts are all over the place, and you can summon NPCs to party with you, so you can hit max level in no time flat. (about a week for experienced players, it would be longer for someone fresh as you have to do Limit Breaks and quests/missions and stuff) If you're looking to experience this game's (awesome) story, then you'll be able to solo all the storylines except for the Seekers of Adoulin one.

Bigger than FF14. Smaller than WoW.

Be prepared to look at a lot of wikis. There's basically no guidance on where to go and what to do. No quests for leveling really, so be prepared for lots of grinding. The game is way easier now though and can be soloed for most of it.

Zilart isn't that great story wise. It's pretty basic. But after that, you'll get (in my opinion) the best MMORPG story available.

Looked through the dat mining on BG forums, and there's some stuff that stands out:

-There's some new SMN gear that looks completely fucking ridiculous.
-The +1 version of the ilvl W.Legs has +18% move speed. The NQ version is still just 12%. Get ready to get gouged.
-What I assume is the upgraded Dalmatica gear looks interesting for WHM. Set bonus enhances Cure Potency II. Depending on how that bonus plays out it might totally redefine WHM Cure sets.
-New Club with Cure Pot. II +2%. Goodbye Ababanili? Would have to fill in Cure Potency in a bunch of other slots to make up for it.
-Upgraded Abj. gear with TA+3 or +4 in almost every slot. Could be good, although it looks like it loses accuracy over augmented Taeon.
-Refresh +3 body pieces that don't take up your head slot? Yyyyyyyup.
-Sneak/Invis/Reraise Rings. Here's hoping they have infinite charges. Or at least a lot of charges and are easy to get.

I think the Dalmatica set is now SMN only (wut), the thing you're seeing with Cure Potency II is probably the upgraded Paean/Iaso set.

There are also a couple new exp/cp rings that have the same values as Echad and Trizek. Wondering if they're a limited charge version of them.

Also, finished the entire set of new Rhapsodies missions last night/this morning. It's really compelling, and a lot meatier than the first set. Now I get to slog through work on about 45 minutes of "sleep". Woooooo.

While I'm betting they are 1/1, they come from getting Mog Tablets so "Easy" is relative.

Not sure if the set bonus would outweigh the Eber's Briault cureskin bonus. Not that it matters, considering how obnoxious it's going to be to try to +1 that stuff. But hey, more stuff to profit farm now! :D

Bleah I need more WotG missions done to progress through the new Rhapsodies stuff. How long does it take to get all the way through to the end, assuming 3-4 hours per grinding session?

Someone cheer me up by posting the effects of the new KIs.

I think you can hammer through it pretty fast if you really want to, and don't care that much about actually watching the cutscenes. Not that I'd really recommend doing it that way, of course. At least it's not weighed down by tons of JP midnight waits or something.

Since you've finished it, what kind of items do the moogles start selling after you get all the KIs?

Are they all from rhapsodies?
I got up to the Lilisette part by accident
Would've missed her entirely if I just went by available walkthroughs
That makes me worry though, cuz based on the list's order, I should've gotten abquhbah already

Better not be permanent missables!

Edit: oh good, got abquhbah
I guess the list is not just rhapsodies reward

More ninja tools and ammo, a couple new food and med items, etc. Nothing very interesting tbh.

About half of those are from rhapsodies part 2, a few are from the new Sinister Reign event, and others will be login points or seasonal event rewards.

In general, there are some trusts that are only available for a limited time, but they do cycle them back in later. For example, many of the trusts available in the current login campaigns were originally from older login campaigns and then not available for a while.

Is there a "best" order to do the expansions in from a story perspective? I finished up Zilart and am starting CoP now as I heard they are intertwined in some way.

Technically that changed a bit with Adoulin - IIRC quests there give Exp, and coalition assignments certainly do.

As mentioned, release order is best, but Zilart and CoP in particular must be finished to unlock a quest and fight that ties them together, Apocalypse Nigh.

I started doing the new missions, but it was getting late so I stopped last night at the Temple of Uggalepih section - is it all soloable until the current end?

I soloed it all on dancer with trusts. The fights are not necessarily pushovers, but it's doable.

Start ToAU as soon as you're able, and start Adoulin as soon as you're able.

ToAU: Progress blocked until 12AM JST quite often.
Adoulin: Progress blocked by not spending enough imprimaturs, plus they take a long time to replenish.

When otherwise blocked, do them in order of release. The expansions do not tie into each other very strongly.

So, returning to the game a few months ago, I am only now getting around to SoA missions (figure it will be a requirement for the last Rhapsody chapter). Between these missions and the Rhapsody missions I am quite disappointed. Endless cutscenes with the very occasional fight. All the past expansions felt more lively, like you were actually part of the story, not just reading it. It's like the second disk of Xenogears, but the story isn't nearly as engaging.

SoA is just countless running back and fourth between the guy at the Pioneer's guild and the Library.

Rhapsodies is just endeless "Go to _____ -> Return to Norg"

These missions aren't fun.

I feel like at some point in this game's history the mission designer must have changed. Back in CoP, we have a single mission that consists of just tons of stuff to do, and then fast-forward to SoA and a single mission is just "talk to Levil, he'll tell you to talk to Arciela (which is a separate mission)". Seekers might have 50 missions, (or whatever the exact number is) but most of those missions are just talking to one NPC in town for a short cutscene. It wouldn't feel as much like filler if they just combined a bunch of these 'talk to this NPC' missions into a single mission. Maybe I'm just mis-remembering what CoP and RoZ was like back in the day.

CoP and RoZ had their stinker missions as well. The escort quest at the end of CoP is one of the worst missions in the game, as is Headstone Pilgrimage. "Move a little bit, fight a little bit, then move a little bit" is horrible. The location for some of the fight missions were also a bit difficult to put together in your head (why is a magic pot buried under Altepa?)

ToAU had the best mission structure. Good mix of cutscenes, exploration and fighting, with good tie-ins to almost all of the side content like Salvage/Assault. The main problem with them is all the JP midnight rollover waits.

The Adoulin structure was probably to counter the vague quest/mission descriptions from the past.
It used to be that the game would be very vague about telling you where to go - when Adoulin was released, its quests started providing actual coordinates.
The single-step missions is to help counter the previous implementation, where if a quest had multiple steps and you stopped working on it and wanted to resume later, it was very easy to forget what you were supposed to do next.

Any tips on the Rhapsodies
Balamor
fight?

Went in mnk/dnc, with trusts Trion, Kupipi, Mhili, Cherukiki and Ferreous Coffin, but the guy kind of abused AoEs, from what I could tell.

Maybe bad choice of trusts, maybe I'm getting undergeared?...

Drudgery that is "Seeker's of Adoulin" missions continues. I am now halfway through Chapter 3.

And for a change of pace I have to wait a game day, and speak to Levil again...

The story is pretty good, but I maintain that the presentation of the story is terrible compared to earlier expansions.

I have a decently geared SMN, and it seemed a normal fight. Little more difficult than the previous ones, but not overly so. That AOE spam does suck though.

For trusts I had Zeid II, Apururu?, Coffin, and I can't remember the other two. DD trusts.

I was on DNC/SAM, and went with Apururu, Rughaudjeen, Prishe II, Arciela, and Tenzen II. (I think?)

Was pretty straightforward, but dancer is rather survivable to begin with.

Ended up buying the game again. Ended up rolling on the Sylph server. Name is hoojy.

Let one of us know when you're on and we'll get you a pearl. I'll keep an eye out for you myself.
