just finished my third level, 'A Song of Ice And Fire'

ID: AADE-0000-001B-12DD

would love some feedback for this, had a blast working on it.

btw thanks to everyone who hasn't only been posting levels but also critiquing other people's creations, whether it is in here or on miiverse. this loop of trying out a whole bunch of levels, giving feedback and simultaneously reflecting on one's own design philosophy is not something you get to do everyday, i feel, and it is immensely valuable.

Do we have a spot to put all of GAF stuff yet? The nintendolife thing is nice and all, but doesn't seem that easy to search.

My first musical stage, the theme from Super Mario Land on Game Boy!

I'm really proud of it, it took a long time to make.

Also, just for informational purposes...I went through and checked what sort of sound you get from music blocks with each falling object I could test. I might not have gotten all of them, and my ear for instruments isn't always the best, but here it is:

Mario - steel drum
mushroom - square wave (NES style)
spring platform - cymbal
goomba - piano
green koopa troopa - xylophone
red koopa troopa - xylophone with more reverb
piranha plant - pizzicato string
fire piranha plant - low string (sustained note)
mystery mushroom - pipe organ
spiny - brass horn
fire flower - piccolo
star - music box
1up - low vibraphone
bullet bill shooter - kettle drum
hammer brother - electric guitar (sustained note)
big hammer brother - slap bass
buzzy beetle - low bell
thwomp - melodic drum
Bowser - low electric guitar
Bowser Jr. - saxophone
monty mole - asian string
bob-omb - orchestra hit
POW block - basic drum
cannon - another melodic drum
spike beetle - harpsichord
dry bones - flute (sustained note)
magikoopa - synth lead
P-switch - another drum
muncher - electric piano
wiggler - bell
shoe goomba - accordion
Yoshi egg - wood block
Yoshi - synth brass
clown car - rich synth
chain chomp peg - high wood block
chain chomp - electric vibraphone

It's a shame that some of these instruments would be nigh unusable in a music playing level since they behave oddly, would keep triggering the same block over and over, etc. The most functional ones are the ones I used for my level, stuff that sits still like munchers and fire flowers. The clown car sounds really nice but I think it'd be too bulky and floaty to use. Likewise, Bowser Jr.'s sax which you could only ever play 3 notes on.

Yes! Gotta press that P switch really quick. There was a mushroom there? I only made it to grab the left question block and it was only a coin haha. It was cool :)

oh, i wanted to put a 1-up in there but it fell out when i was redecorating that part, whoops! the right block contains a leaf which is the only power-up in the level. while i'm really happy with how the sub-area aka the tetris screen turned out, i think i also prefer doing the level as small mario myself.

Do we have a spot to put all of GAF stuff yet? The nintendolife thing is nice and all, but doesn't seem that easy to search.

my stance on this has been the following: i'll try and put the really good stuff in the community showcase, for the other levels, people can follow gaffers in course world. they have to put in an id of theirs sooner than later if they wanna play a stage so if they just follow the creator, they'll have a complete list of their levels readily available for playing. i'm not sure who would use a complete database of gaffer levels and how such a database would be used, especially if it's just a collection of numbers and letters. also, it'd be more work since you would have to put in the code for every level you played (instead of putting in one and following the creator).

if someone wants to make a google doc, they should definitely go ahead. i'm just not sure what purpose it would serve. a list of creators with a sample level id to search them by and follow them would make more sense, for example!

Bad luck me of only grabbing the left one hah. Yes I was scared the whole level of the flames and I was desperately looking for a mushroom, a fire flower or any item hahah. Looking forward for more levels :)

Return to Subcon: Mario World
018C-0000-001B-9B25

It's more or less a faithful recreation of the first level in Super Mario Bros. 2 (USA). The vertical sections couldn't be done with the height restriction. Went with the Super Mario World skin because the Goombas can be thrown after they're jumped on. There's doors and POW blocks. Everything is close/approximately where it should be.

Two secret areas ... eh, tried to pack as much into the level without deviating too much.

Made my first level.

Let me know what you guys think!

Just beat it
Got an error connection of course -_-
really interesting maze you made there. Although i'll admit it did try my patience more than a few times

Edit: Not aginst you, but this level really demonstrated to me how much I hate the despawn mechanic in this game, had to restart a few times due to despawn

Made a kind of simple stage (my first one), just messing around. This seems super neat.

Now that would be cool.

Yeah, nothing's unlocking for me and I've used all the beginning tools available for the past several hours. Getting kind of irritated, think I would have just preferred doing the clock trick.

Man, I'm glad this game has room for over a septillion levels with the amount of digits in the sharing system.

Really forward thinking by Nintendo.

#1 - Use every new item once
#2 - Once you've done that, spam blocks for 1-2 minutes

Yeah, same here :( I created a whole level and I easily spend like an 1 and a half hour doing it and no notification of new tools :(

I'm gonna try this thanks!

Thank you! Maybe the error connection was because I deleted the level and re-uploaded it? I noticed a flaw in my level that needed to be changed. Did the one you play involve 2 koopas or only one?

I am. One of my levels is in the second post of the thread.

Make sure you've placed one of every item in your level then just scribble in you level with ground blocks for a minute or two to trigger the shipment.

Spam a bunch of blocks or items you can fill up the level with.

Then your next shipment should arrive "earlier than expected' by truck.

Then use those new items a good amount and the cycle will repeat.

If you play with all your assets long enough, the truck will come early. Usually takes about 15-30 minutes of playing around.

I look forward to playing your mega man inspired courses.

Keep creating and it'll say the truck arrived earlier.

Thanks all!

Just uploaded my first course. I'm rather proud of it! Check it out if you want. :)

Play this and give me some feedback.

I think this might be a think that either only makes sense to me or is super baby easy and uninteresting.

The first part is the hardest actually. I wasnt sure how to deal with the piranha plants + the red koopas in that pattern. The star last long enough to reach the goal, I'm guessing you were suposed to get a hat to go through all the Thwomps?

Here's my first course, "A Crafty Goomba Disguise": E6F5-0000-001B-E015

Mario's facing another castle, and this time he's taking the employee entrance! However, he'll need that Goomba disguise in order to bypass the security checkpoints. Can you make it through without being unmasked?

My first Subworld based stage, "A Safe Landing for Yoshi:"

87E5-0000-001A-3DFD

Combo of grass overworld and lava fortress. I tried to make it tougher with some devious jumps.

I don't get why you can't look for levels made by your friends. Instead Nintendo is opting for friend codes, which they must REALLY hate people for getting mad at them, since they continue to use the concept whenever necessary.

Hm, the star should have run out by the beetle helmet. As long as you got through it, it works, but I wonder how I mistimed that. Maybe I should add some wall-jumps in the intermediate area to waste time.

Uploaded my first level. I don't have all the objects unlocked but thought it was challenging.

Lakitu and Bullet Bill

Please let me know if you try it out.

I'd really like some feedback on mine. No gimmicks, just concentrated precision platforming with multiple paths.

Some constructive criticism would be great. Thanks!

This is insanity. Making a note here to play this first thing tomorrow.

I guess shells can't activate invisible blocks huh? Had an idea with them to put into a level, but was sad that it didn't work lol.

Ok, my stage has only a 6,66% of succesful tries and I don't know why because after all it's not so hard. It's a puzzle-action stage with a particular mechanic that involves a lot the concept of "hurt".

If you didn't see my old post, the code for the stage is 4780-0000-0017-661D, give it a try. I'm really curious about what gaffers would say about my work.

ok I beat it! haha

not being able to wall jump once you commit to a copter spin was messing with me

Haha, yeah I tried to get a bit tricky with the pipes. I'm going to elaborate on those types of maneuvers in a second level like that much more fleshed out tomorrow. That was just a test run for ideas, once I get the trail unlocked it'll be easier to plan a level like that out. I like that Power-Up and it's potential for precision.
