I just did the 100 Mario Challenge on expert. I only made it to the 5th stage using all my 100 lives.

Basically the stages I've played are troll/trial and error stages. Not only were they're troll stages, they also required near extreme skills to make certain jumps and what not. It drove me to the brink of insanity. I'm not going to lie but, I did have some fun. If that is what in store for me when playing on expert, I have no idea how I'm going to complete 16 stages on 100 lives.

My best on expert is stage 10. Is the reward just a single amiibo costume for expert?

Yeah, but I read that you can only unlock 20 costumes from easy mode and something like 40 from normal, so I think if we want to unlock all 99 or 100 or whatever we'll need to complete expert like 40 times.

Since part of the appeal is shells doing rube goldberg stuff, try to keep the shell in the player's sight in the second puzzle. If you walk into the trampoline area at the spiny hat section before getting the spiny hat, it can be pretty hard to get back out, and I don't think the wall jumps you have to make there are very fun. The way Mario keeps losing his grip on the wall makes it feel janky. On the shell surfing section I couldn't read what the coins spelled out fast enough since I ended up collecting them while standing on the shell. Thought it said "hold B". At the part with the thwomps, the reward is a spring to reach the next area, but I think a lot of players might bring one of the springs from the previous sections with them since you don't need it for the second to last jump before the skull platform. Since I was holding the run button and not down, the surfing section actually ended with the spring already in my hands.

Hope you don't mind all the criticisms. lol. I still enjoyed the level, there are just a lot of little things that could be polished up pretty easily, though as you said this is an experimental level.
Ahh shoot, the spiny helmet trampoline section is definitely something I overlooked. The arrow would make someone go that way before waiting for the shell. I think I have a fairly easy solution for that part.

And I fixed it before posting this reply lol. Solution right here:

Allows for you to get out of there easily if you go there, doesn't require janky wall jumps to get out of there, and you can easily break the blocks blocking the path.

Those springs were just left over from a previous shell jumping thing I did, I just kept them there to make getting to the skull platform faster, but I never even thought that people would bring that over to get to the next area. I'll have to remove that. Thanks for pointing that out.

What it actually said is "Hold ↓" which would let you keep your spiny helmet. If you didn't, then you would get a beetle helmet to replace it. This was alluded to with the whole beetle helmet destroying the spiny helmet that was on the ground next to the cannon.

This one is based on the Mystery House concept from Super Mario 3D World. Essentially, you have to quickly clear small rooms based in one challenge to reach the end.

In Mystery House Bounce you have to clear 4 challenges based on bouncing on top of cannon balls. The first one is super easy and it ramps up from there, but it's not super hard IMO. The timer is set to 100 seconds to add pressure. Fail a challenge and you have to start over, just like in 3D World. There are also 2 hidden 1-ups.

I hope you guys like this level, I think it's a fun idea! If it's well received I'll make more Mystery Houses.

I think I'm getting close to wrapping up my 1-1 level for the contest. Pretty proud of it so far, but I might make further edits. Hell, I might start from scratch. We'll see how things pan out over the weekend. :)

Just getting started here. I've made a few levels. Mostly I try to avoid gimmicks and make levels that I feel wouldn't be out of place in a standard Mario game. Here's my first airship level, which is not autoscrolling. My goal was to have multiple paths throughout the level, but to have those paths interconnect, so you could traverse it any number of ways. Not terribly difficult, but so far only one person has beat it.

Finally completed my first World...now I need to think of the theme for World 2.

An autoscroller! Not my favourite type of level but let's check it out. Camera can get a bit messy if you go to the top airships, forcing some blind jumps... Not sure if that's the player's fault. Nice way of making the boss battle obligatory. This really felt like a 1-4 level, easy but not ridiculously easy. One small suggestion is that if this is indeed meant to be 1-4 then maybe the boss should be a enemy of lower rank than Bowser Jr., but it's your call!

Well I guess I'll post my first level here. This is a rough draft for my 1-1 submission. Don't let it turn you off that it's seemingly so easy, there is an expert challenge too. There is a way to beat it in 20 seconds (fastest possible AFAIK), so 480 left on the clock :)

Making you go backwards in the second nightmare is a cool twist. I had no idea you could surf on shells. That's a very neat concept. Very fun level!

I defeated your stage. Took me 30+ tries and I consider myself a moderate experienced player. I did have fun, it felt like a real good stage. Pretty challenging. The reason I died was most likely to poor decisions or lack of skill when I should've known better. Despite my many deaths, I really enjoyed your level design.

Couple of things I want to share... After I defeated Koopa, I was trying to figure out what to do next. First I thought
I had to go under the falling donuts using the Koopa Clown Coopter, but the donuts would just reappear. Then I figured I probably had to jump up to the top, and your design pretty much points to that. Then after jumping to the top, I decided to run to the left where the flag is at. For a second, I was about to catch a stroke because I thought I screwed myself over. But luckily there was a 1up. I was able to jump back around and finish the stage.

I suppose I should just let the level speak for itself and not ramble on about the design process as much as I want to, but I will say a few things just as an introduction. This stage is built around the concept of layered level design. Every Mario stage will have some form of layered level design, that's what the games are all about after all. So I just wanted to take that concept and apply it to everything, including the aesthetics. So basically, the level has layers. Beginners should be right at home, learning the basics at their own pace, but peel back the layers and experts should find some stuff to enjoy as well.

Hope you all like it!

Win or lose, I'll be making an in depth post over every minor design decision after the contest is over. So look forward to that. : p

Thanks for playing! Second is kind of mean since it's hard to time the jump but I have more trouble with the third.

Yeah, throwing things is one of the ideas I've had for a second one. There are many possibilities for small challenges so I think I'll make more of this, but I'll wait until more people play this one though.

I was messing around with it trying to make it impossible for it to mess up the flow but I gave up (temporarily). Anyway, glad you liked it and glad it felt like a 1-1!

EDIT: I just realized that you can go in both the entrance and exit of a pipe. I have a little puzzle in a level that gets ruined if they just go inside the exit pipe. Is there any way to change this or am I just going to have to put the exit pipe high enough in the air that it is inaccessible?

Bowser Jr. is the closest to having a traditional Mario boss requiring 3 hits to take down. If there was alternatives, I would have used them, but I don't have much choice if I want a proper boss fight.

Haha, my first level idea was "Yoshi Genocide," but I'm not skilled enough to make a decent level yet and I don't think Nintendo would appreciate the title. I'll give it a whirl in a second and post some feedback.

EDIT: Fun level that utilizes the yoshi ditch well, haha. My only critique is that I'm not sure the majority of "expert" players would be able to complete it on their first try, which of course isn't always a bad thing, but it relied pretty heavily on trial and error. I would suggest using a normal bone thing (what am I supposed to call those things?) instead of the blue one because that would give players enough time to assess the incoming enemies/obstacles, but I'm not sure those would be fast enough to catch mario after, say, jumping over some saws. Anyway, very enjoyable level.

Nice to get some visual Feedback, I was wondering why some people where having such a hard time, I totally failed to convey how much of a run up is needed to make the jumps.
The jumps don't require much of a run up, you don't have to hop back and forth between flames, you can largely gun it

Ah, maybe a winged enemy? They take two hits but I have no idea if you can put them in the Clown Car.

The pipe has to be sideways with no ground at the very entrance, kinda like how a door needs to have ground just under it. You do not then need to have it inaccessibly high in the air.

For the waves, go into the telephone sound effect in that frog menu, and give it a shake.

As for the ghost things, they're called stretches, and you get them by simply placing a Boo on the ground.

Erm... Why does it have bowser exactly ? That seems strange and there's a giant pit near the beginning too, but the rest of the level seems like an honest (if somewhat underdeveloped ) attempt at 1-1

Think of all the fun stuff you can do in a Mario game (finding secrets, kicking koopas into weird places) and setting up easy opportunities for players to find them.

As is, it's too empty, also don't have a bowser and giant pit at the beginning

For the waves, go into the telephone sound effect in that frog menu, and give it a shake.

As for the ghost things, they're called stretches, and you get them by simply placing a Boo on the ground.

If you ever do another one, I think shaking the heart will give you a desired effect

I like the level, but you can't have Mega Bowser on level 1-1! Haha. I would suggest removing him and possibly adding a power-up to the level, like a Fire Flower or even just an invincibility star and some enemies to knock out.

The pipe has to be sideways with no ground at the very entrance, kinda like how a door needs to have ground just under it. You do not then need to have it inaccessibly high in the air.

Hmm, I'm a bit confused. My exit pipe is sideways and level with the ground, and it also feeds green koopas (which you need to solve the little puzzle). Yet when you run into it you go to what I wanted to be the exit of the underground zone.

EDIT: Ohh, are you saying the pipe coming out sideways has to be one notch above the ground, thus rending it impossible to get inside?
