You like steak sauce? Fine, whatever.

But if a steak NEEDS it? Then that's one shit cut of meat. And yeah, they do exist.

This. If you like steak sauce then whatever, that's your preference I guess but you can't try and call it a good steak if you can't eat it without sauce.

Its disrespectful to the cook/chef. Like dipping sushi in ketchup.

You ordered the cheeseburger sushi?

If I ask for A1, something is wrong.
I really like A1, but it's nowhere near as good as a good steak.

Go to Ruth's, order the fillet rare(medium rare if you must). Perfection.

I'm Asian. When I went to America I applied some A1 sauce without knowing what it was. God it tastes disgusting to me, so sour. I have no idea how you guys can even apply that sauce on a fine piece of meat that is steak.

Ketchup or mustard, maybe, but A1 and all the various steak sauces are so overpowering it doesn't even go with the steak. It just overpowers it.

A steak that NEEDS steak sauce is not a good steak.

However, that does not mean that steak sauce cannot improve a steak. I like the flavor of A-1 sauce, personally, but I only use it occasionally. If you like steak sauce, put on the steak sauce. A good steak shouldn't need it, but if you like it, you like it.

Black peppercorn, onions and/or honey are the best.

Steak sauce is what you put on an overcooked rubbery steak at Applebees.

Team NO sauce!!

I cooked a perfect New York for my cousin and the first thing he says is do you have A1?

I took the rest of his steak and ate it myself.

Steak sauce is the equivalent of people asking for Steak well done.

There's nothing technically wrong with it, but like a male adult drinking juice boxes, you look at them thinking they should grow up.

Good job at misconstruing my post guys, I wasn't saying steak and burgers were the same thing. But like a good burger not always requiring ketchup, a good steak shouldn't necessarily require steak sauce.

It's like saying a really good slice of bread being toasted doesn't always need butter, but I'm not comparing toasted bread to steak.

False.

the end result is all that matters. If a steak is prepared so that its fucking amazing with a paired sauce, my compliments to the chef.

Applying some random sauce to a steak prepared to stand on its own without even tasting it is pretty rude. Customer's always right when it comes to their taste buds though.

Imagine a steak that's looks kind of well done. You cut into it and look around the table for sauce. But damn it, you can't find any. What kind of restaurant is this anyways? Then you notice the juice flowing onto the the plate, it looks so damn juicy you figure 'fuck the sauce' and take a bite anyways. Your eyes dialate and you feel a wave of endorphins cruising through your body. At this point you question the universe. Where the fuck am I and what the fuck did I just put in my body? That's right, you just ate a piece of Wagyu beef you motherfucker.

No. That's like saying sushi doens't need wasabi. At some point your taste buds acclimate to the thing your eating and it needs a kick.

Does steak need butter compound?

Do burgers need pepperjack and green chili?

Some people like to treat food like it's a edible fedora. Like people who won't shut up about how they only drink black coffee.

A friend and I both got a filet for dinner last night. Without even tasting it he asks for steak sauce. And thats fine with me because he could put mustard on it for all I cared. He just likes the taste of steak sauce. I always heard that a steak that needed steak sauce wasnt a good steak. Its own flavor is what makes it so great and sauces mean you may as well got a hamburger with some A1. I know gaf is full of red meat experts so I decided to pose this question.

Well, as a red meat expert, if you were looking for a flavorful steak then you made a mistake ordering filets. Filets are bland cuts that you should really only get if you care a lot about tenderness or you get freaked out by the idea of eating fat. It is really not uncommon to eat filets with some kind of sauce or topping to give it flavor, although a more snobbish consumer would go with a red wine sauce or Oscar style rather than A1.

If you want to get a steak with a strong natural flavor, then you should order either a Ribeye or a NY Strip, depending on your tastes for fattiness and texture.

I personally wouldn't sauce up my steak, but to each his own. Some people just love A1 and other such sauces regardless of actual steak quality. Its their food, their taste buds, their stomachs mayne

true. if you NEED it, then that cut of beef has no natural flavor.

I do think you need to season a steak...chinese peppercorn, perppercorn, salt, butter, garlic. but then sear 3 minutes on each side, low hit 5 minutes...let it stand...and it should taste fantastic.

I think this is true... it's probably not a good quality of steak or good cook of the steak if it needs sauce.

However if it ends up being a low quality steak and you use sauce there's nothing wrong with that.

I would say if you're spending above 30 dollars for 6 oz steak it shouldn't need sauce.

I wouldn't say any steak really needs steak sauce, though I guess some may prefer to replace the taste of the steak with the taste of the sauce, for whatever reason. I don't think those sauces are really complimentary to a steak in any way – they're very sweet, and acidic, and heavily-spiced and will overpower the more subtle beef flavours that are part of the pleasure of a good steak for most people.

That's not to say there aren't sauces that are good with a steak. A bearnaise, red wine sauce, mushroom sauce, herbed compound butter, etc. can be good, as those aren't generally as strongly-flavoured and can bolster the actual qualities of the beef (fat, umami) rather than overpowering it.

If your friend had a good cut of steak with a high marbiling would he still use steak sauce? If so punch him in the throat.

If it's organic and rBGH free then it doesn't need that. But if it's American steak then it's like 90% water and needs flavor, desperately. Those GMO's they add make food taste strange.

steak frites among things is a good example of why certain sauces are acceptable on all qualities of meat

IMO, a bad steak can be ok with good sauce. A good steak can be better with good sauce. Rare steak from a good cut of meat, plus hot sauce is heaven on Earth. It makes sauceless steaks pale in comparison.

If you're ordering from a restaurant and you still think a steak needs sauce because it's too dry or not flavorful enough, then they fucked up.

I love me some steak sauce on veggies, potatoes, and even rice though.

A flavorful piece of meat I prefer on its own or dipped in mashed potatoes. I do like A1 though, but only heavily use it when the meat isn't great.

I'm pretty sure that when the OP says "steak sauce" they're specifically referring to A1 and condiments in that vein, not any kind of sauce you might put on a steak.

Why make a $45 steak taste like a $3 sauce?

A good steak is expensive. The flavor of a good steak is by definition expensive. It usually costs $20 plus for the chance to taste a good steak. Why pass that opportunity up to taste a sauce I can put on anything cheap?

If I want to taste A1 I'll put it on some chicken or pork or cheap steak.
