Set your expectations really low. Nintendo are in a transition period where all their major resources are to the NX.

Expect spin off games and HD remakes. And more information on currently announced games.

i played skyward sword in august and i absolutely loved the game. It's a worthy zelda title and i think that the controls were great for it. Of course given that not everyone was comfortable with it and i the main controller is the gamepad, i don't think that future zelda titles should have all of the motion controls from SS. But gyroscopic aiming is a must going forward in my opinion and i am glad that Zelda U has it, since the game awards showed us aonuma aiming with the gamepad to shoot some arrows and mark a place with a beam using the gyro aiming.

Another thing is that since some people aren't comfortable at all with any kind of motion controls, they always should give people options for this. Which they do! Wind Waker HD is one of the zelda titles that give a lot of control options to the player. You can even play with the Pro controller. You can play off-tv, you can play using gyro, you can use inverted controls, it's great in my opinion.

It's a wonderful game. My wife and I played it about a year before you did ad were just blown away by its quality given all the flack it gets. (Here's my LTTP about it if you're interested.)

I totally agree about control options, for most Zeldas, but Skyward really wouldn't be the same game with regular controls, as much of a learning curve the game's controls held for me.

That game is like 4 years old

Two years. (You really had me thrown for a loop for a sec. I had to look it up.)

From what I understood of the recent comments from Nintendo, the new format won't be debuted until next year, at which point it might not even be called an ND.

What comments are you referring to? All I've read is basically "Nintendo Directs will continue, we have no further information to share".

This--albeit brief--remark:

Earlier today, we heard from Nintendo CEO Tatsumi Kimishima that at least one new Nintendo Direct will air before the end of this year. Another tidbit about the company’s plans for the presentations has since been made known.

During Nintendo’s financial results briefing, Kimishima mentioned that Nintendo Direct is currently being remodeled. In 2016, we’ll be seeing the new format. Specific details about what’s in store for Nintendo Direct in the future were not made announced.

So despite a new Direct this week, the new format it sounds like isn't ready yet.

At last. The last one being the dreadful E3 offering was difficult to cope with. Hopefully this one can pull something out of the bag.

Twilight Princess HD is a given, I would think. 3DS could do with a pleasant surprise title. Not expecting too many shocks though, I think we really will just see a lot of Mario Tennis and Star Fox.

Crazy thing is, AFAIK they do two full English localizations for every Nintendo game. That still baffles me.

Definitely not for every game. Some NoA localized games come out unchanged in the EU and some get slightly edited (mostly for place or character names, e.g. Fire Emblem 7's Bern nation being changed to Biran). But yeah, they're the only company I know of that does 2 full English localizations every now and then.

Oh, is that right? I'm kinda relieved to hear that. I thought it was a massive waste of resources and time when I heard it. Anyway, thanks for the info.

Also if you watch the Gamexplain discussion video, you learn that Ash Paulson thinks that "segue" is pronounced "sehg".

That is a strange thing to call me out for or even bring attention to here, but all right, I'll bite. Because I was speaking quickly and primarily concerned with getting all my thoughts out there in a timely manner, I purposefully omitted the "way" syllable. It was a conscious decision. I don't know about you, but I've heard tons of people do this before as kind of a slang-ish shorthand way of saying the full word ("sehg" vs. "sehg-way").

It's not proper in the least, and I recognize that, but this is a GameXplain discussion and not an academic presentation so I'm not too concerned about it. My meaning clearly got across, and that's the most important part!

Anyway, how about that Nintendo Direct hype? :p

I'm glad Skyward Sword has been completely forgotten by Nintendo.

Twilight Princess and Wind Waker serve as the representation for the series in Smash Bros/in Amiibo.

Both games are available on the Wii U in new releases.

Zelda Wii U uses the same control scheme as Wind Waker and Twilight Princess.

Just hopefully Demise or Hylia or whatever don't show up in Zelda U.
Uuuuhhhhh, what about all that SS stuff from Hyrule Warriors?

North American Direct

  • The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess HD for Wii U (major announcement)
  • Super Smash Bros. DLC (major announcement)
  • Rhythm Tengoku 3D Localization ?
  • Style Savvy 3 Localization ?
  • Metroid: Zero Mission (VC)
  • More Wii Classics on VC

I don't think any major game announcements are left for the Wii U or 3DS. Just localizations and that surprise HD Remaster of Twilight Princess.

I would be soo happy for any localization announcement of DGS, Dragon Quest, or even YW 2/busters (even though it's likely far too soon for either one of those).

Alright, hadn't seen that one before! Interesting.

Indeed it appears as if this Nintendo Direct will be very familiar, but once we enter 2016 we'll see a somewhat changed Nintendo. New format for one of their biggest marketing tools, new endevours in the form of mobile, membership- and account services, and a brand new gaming platform on the horizon. The key word is, once again: interesting.

Skyward Sword was a control scheme nightmare. Miyamotos botched E3 stage demonstration of the game wasn't too far off from how it felt at times lol

I first started playing Skyward Sword downstairs on my couch and I had zero problem with the game, I then continued playing it in my older brother's room with the TV in front of the bed, so I was sitting closer to it and I still had no trouble with it.

The only trouble I had with motion was at the beginning when I was going through a learning curve and when I got the bow but that was only because I was using it wrong.

They'd have to redesign it obviously. It probably won't even be remade at all if it's not worth the cost. But that just goes back to what I said about being happy that everything about that game is being forgotten. Except like Skyloft as a location I guess.

Skywards sword would need an overhaul to get the control to work, they would be better off focusing on making new Zelda game than remaking it.

Yeah, I respect they did that but still, it's baffling that games like Animal Crossing that are right around the corner - and all they have to rely on as a big holiday game - are getting little marketing compared to previous years.

I agree and I think they did plan to promote it by having more direct but Iwata's death happened leaving Nintendo with footage that was basically unusable.

So instead of recording new footage, they resorted to using their other social media page to promote their holiday line up until enough time has passed that they can restart Nintendo direct with a new face.

Hmmm... haven't seen any wishlists that are too silly, so let me remedy that :D

- Rosalina promoted to playable in smash bros along with new additions/other characters promoted
- Mario Tennis will have free content downloads including new courts and characters... one of which is Rosalina
- why all this Rosalina? To celebrate the announcement of a brand new Rosalinaware for Wii-U of course! :p

Fixed it for ya. ;p

Seriously. It's already gonna be in English...no reason not to bring it over.

I dunno can you guys in the US handle the superior European spelling of Colour? ;p

Crazy thing is, AFAIK they do two full English localizations for every Nintendo game. That still baffles me.

I like it that they do that, I am not American so I don't need American texts in my game.

It was one of the things that I requested a lot when doing the club Nintendo survey.

Set your expectations really low. Nintendo are in a transition period where all their major resources are to the NX.

Expect spin off games and HD remakes. And more information on currently announced games.

There are games that they can help localizes without it taking resources away from the NX.

I will be legitimately crushed if TPHD isn't announced. Like day ruining shit.

This.
I really wish the leak never happened, because then I would have not had to endure this long wait and possible disappointment if it somehow was an error of some weird kind.

And the reveal would have ben soo much more exhilarating.

Yo guys. What are we expecting to see in terms of the actual presentation itself?

Will we get an Iwata mention? Who will take his place?

They really need to put some more of their damn Gamecube games on the eshop. Some of those games are rare, and many have not played them or no longer have the system. They could make good $$.

Fire Emblem PoR, Paper Mario TTYD, Super Mario Sunshine, Melee, Double Dash...

If they do they'd need to support gamecube controllers. I'm not sure how well the controls for those games translates to the new button configurations, though iIm specifically thinking of the analogue triggers when I say this

Cool write-up about the game. I admire nintendo's decision with skyward sword, comitting themselves to make a game as complex as zelda with so many different type of motion controls. So in that case it's understandable that there wasn't any kind of controller options. But i think that depending on nintendo's implementation about zelda U, they should give as many options as possible. Aonuma even said that even if he prefers a certain control scheme, that shouldn't be the only one. So i believe that they will always give us a lot of options regarding controls, UI and even difficulty.

I'm also happy that i'm replaying some other zeldas in anticipation for TPHD and Zelda Wii U. I've just finished OOT on VC and now i'm playing WWHD and it's wonderful to see the little modifications on the game. The cool thing is also that playing these games that i'm much more nostalgic for compared to SS shows me that i truly like SS and it's a game that i will gladly return to in the future just like i do with these other games.

The only problems is that I just don't like discussing the game (or zelda in general, and other long running series like metroid for example) here on neogaf and other places because people have a lot of different opinions about the series and people love to show them with lots of snark and hyperbole.

The meltdowns are going to be spectacular if TPHD is not announced. Or even worse, it get's announced... but it's only the Wii version to download. Hahahaha ahhhhhhhhhhh

Totally hyped.

No announcement for a japanese Direct is rather suspicious thought, especially after all this time. Shouldn't get my hopes up for Pokémon Z reveal...

Dude its totally gonna be the Z reveal :)

But if there’s no JP Direct, you're right, it doesn’t bode well.

November 2014 Direct - first announcement: Majora's Mask 3D
November 2015 Direct - first announcement: Twilight Princess HD?
