Star Wars Battlefront: PC Performance Thread

Not Spaceghost

Spaceghost
I got it to work at 1366x768 on all medium settings at a range of 30-43 fps which is fine by me considering my hardware.

So I play on a laptop

Which has an 2.6ghz i7
A geforce GT 750m
and 8 gigs of ram

Seriously though DICE are goddamn wizards of optimization, how a game runs on all medium settings on hardware as crap as mine as solidly as it does is honestly beyond impressive.

I hit a few snags upon trying to get the game to work. First when booting the game up i would get a please update intel integrated video drivers. Second, at the start menu my keyboard wouldn't respond and I couldn't proceed past the press enter to start screen basically.

So I updated my intel drivers - Nothing. (it was still asking me to update)
Updated my nvidia drivers - Nothing.
Set my nvidia card as the one to be used with battlefront - Nothing. (in fact when booting the game it was still telling me to update my intel drivers)
Tried various command line things for the game, like starting in windowed mode and administrator - Nothing.

So what did work?

After disabling UEFI Secure boot in the BIOS under security settings. I restarted and the game started up perfectly. No intel update required error at the beginning, no problems getting past the title screen and then the game just work right after that.

So yeah if you're on a laptop with an nvidia dedicated card and an integrated video card, and you have similar issues, just disable UEFI secure boot, nothing else will work.

Decided to toggle FXAA off and ramped the resolution scale to 125%.
Whoah, looks much, much nicer. No blurriness, but no noticeable jaggies either.
And figured out why the FPS cap was 79, i had capped FPS to there (well, 80) via Catalyst Control Center for some reason.

So, what kind of performance can I expect from my rig playing at 4K?

I am playing on PS4 at the moment, but I want to double dip just to see this game in native 4K.

3770k
2x 970 FTW SLI
16GB Ram
W10
SSD

Can I expect relativity stable performance at 4K?

Nice, I would be more than happy with that level of performance at 4K.

Now to wait for a price drop, or just bite the bullet now...

Well, the Season Pass will be mandatory if you want to keep on playing this on PC. So keep this in mind as it raises costs dramatically. Not worth to double dip, imo. If you just want to see how the game looks on a 4k display. Visit the PC screenshot thread or the endor thread, there are some 4k screens there.

I double dip on many of my console games just for the 4K/PC experience. MGSV, The Witcher 3, Battlefield BC2/3/4, Alien Isolation, ACII, Bioshock, Mass Effect, Ground Zeroes, GTA IV/V, Tomb Raider, TitanFall, etc etc.

That said, just want to see if I should wait, or if I want to experience the goodness right now.

Screenshots are nothing compared to native 4K gameplay. That said, the game already got 30 bucks from me. Could throw another 60 at it and call 90 worth it....

Decisions.

One could argue the reasoning behind buying console games and then rebuying and replaying it on PC a couple of days later. But it's your time and money, do whatever you want with it.
That said, no idea how I, or anybody, can help you with the decision if you should do it. If you got the time and money to do so and you feel the hunch, well there you go. It's just a hobby.

SLI users using 60 hz monitor/tv, to achieve smoother gameplay is a must create a user.cfg file in game folder with this command

GameTime.MaxVariableFps 60

frametimes problems otherwise.

Also, using 0x09C976F5 sli bits it's possible to avoid some kind of performance problem every time you die that occurs with default bits. Surely not every flag in those custom bits are necessary but I've not tried every flag one by one, this way it works.

instructions for the sweetfx are great but what about fxaa - seems to be only focused on turning on txaa right?

Guys what is resolution scale and why does it look so dam good at %200? Literally looks much better then 1440p with normal scale

Supersampling. Basically the game is rendered at a higher resolution.

I play with 1080p at 125% scale, looks really good. I could push it higher probably and keep good framerate but, ah... *shrug*

Playing on Ultra with TAA 1080p and Vsync with solid 60fps no drops or hitches on this rig:

i5 4690K 3.5GHz overclocked to 4GHz.
Zotac mini 970 GTX overclocked +100.
8GB DDR3.
128GB SSD for OS (Windows 10).
2TB 7500 rpm USB3 portable drive for everything else.

I thought I would suffer with 'just' 8GB of RAM, but nope, all good! I have Chrome open with 50 tabs and Photoshop in the background too.

I start to see frame drops on some maps/modes if I res scale over 125%, so I keep at 100%. Not bad at all though. TAA so beautiful when in motion compared to FXAA or no AA. Not a single staircase stepping artifact or jaggy to be seen when running around playing properly which is where those artifacts are most obvious.

Then raise it to 120% or 115%. Improves your overall IQ and your framerate will still be above 60 fps. It's worth it in my opinion.

Absolutely fantastic SLI scaling on my 970s. Huge props to DICE!

Vsync is quite stuttery for me though. Might be a mismatch between my monitor's actual vsync and what the game is actually trying to lock the FPS to. Still, not much tearing without vsync.

Thanks! I'll try this.

EDIT: Seems to help, though I do get some screen tearing in the upper third portion of the screen.

I just experienced the weirdest glitch I've ever seen while playing a multiplayer game. I was literally god mode out of nowhere and was kicking ass while being immortal without even realizing it. It was only when I got the expected "CHEATER" in the chat that I realized something was up.

I couldn't even commit suicide with a grenade. I had to quit out.

Know glitch. There is even a Gaf Thread about it somewhere.

For some reason menus and everything absolutely craps on itself but playing in game it runs very smoothly.

Audio sometimes also has static.

Anyone getting weird sound issues? I've had the game give this weird screeching audio and at times no sound effect/music unless I exit out and restart. Very bizarre.

The TAA in Frostbite needs more work. It has ghosting on speculars or alphas with speculars. Its actually quite visible how image gets progressively more better with accumulation of more frames, similar to something like real-time raytracing demos getting less grainy after short while.

TAA on Endor looks bad. The foliage does not suit it well, even with sharpening. I usually switch to FXAA just for Endor.

FXAA is shimmering galore though.

Honestly, both aren't perfect and have their pros and cons. I still can't find the perfect solution for me.

I had some sound issues during beta, updating sound drivers fixed them (very often people forget to look for newer sound drivers).

Anyone had any luck getting Steam In-Home Streaming to work with this game? I get 3 seconds of black screen then exits back to Steam. All my other games seem to work though.

So just a .cfg file with that line in the folder with profile settings file?

2550k stock, 970 modestly OC'd, 16GB RAM.

I'm holding 60fps at ultra at 1680x1050 with no drops that I've seen yet. Solid.

1080p - 110% res scale - Maxed Out
Average ~72FPS [Supremacy & Walker Assault]
Lowest peak 65FPS [Endor tutorial]

One thing that I have to complain, the little to no destructibility. That's really annoying after 2 years of Battlefield

which option can I reduce at 3440x1440 to improve fps with a reference 980ti? getting lsight drops in endor.

In order to reduce aliasing and shimmer without TAA I blur I went to 1440 125% (equal to 3200x1800) and to achieve at least 60 fps 99%+ of the time I went with these settings.

ZSm7dP5.png

I personally found these to improve FPS with little noticeable loss in quality. 3440x1440 is a lower resolution so you wouldn't even have to dial it back this extreme (and I have a Fury, which is generally slightly slower). It's up to you what you notice and care about, but this is what I went with.

I have 60 fps minimum with ultra + taa on every game mode and map, even that rainy blast map, with my 980ti hybrid (ref pcb) overclocked to 1490/7610 at 3440x1440. If you don't want to overclock, you could drop just shadows to high or AO to high, they cost the most. When I was using a 970 I had to drop shadows and kept everything else at high/ultra for 60 fps at this res.

Thanks guys. Tinkered around with AO since it is what I notice the least and seems I only ever drop to 58fps now.

I do have room for some OC and don't mind doing it. What do you use to OC?

Thanks for making those videos, they'll be useful in the future to show the type of artifacts TAA methods can cause.

I use MSI afterburner to OC and monitor.

Yeah, I get sound crackle as well with my creative Titanium HD in this game.

do you use headphones? Which ones do you use?

AD 700s through a sound card. Tried it with speakers and various sound card settings: same issue.

It's a bit weird on my end. Like audio suttering and popping? Only certain things trigger it, like music, maybe some explosions.

Only game to do so.

Thanks.

I was getting crackling in Surround Mode with my Logitech G35 headphones. Rolled back to 8.4 drivers and that fixed the issue.

Do NOT turn in game vsync on for this game. Massive input lag.

But that's expected. General rule is

* Ingame Vsync ALWAYS OFF
* Driver game profile Vsync ALWAYS ON (adaptative if you don't have locked framerate)
* Driver game profile Max Frames ahead = mininum value that doesn't affect your vsynced framerate (usually 2 for 1 gpu, 3 for 2 or more gpus)
* Always use Exclusive fullscreen mode if available

+ RTSS if the game has frametime inconsistency.
