Does anyone else really want Iron Fist to be Asian?

Might have a show coming up, and I know he wasn't in the comics, but come on. He's clearly influenced by Asian design and history, he's only a rich white guy because Marvel wanted readers to care about him back then. It's 2015 now and there's still almost no Asian superheroes, and that's completely ridiculous.

I know some of you will say making the martial artist an Asian dude is just playing into stereotypes, but I think at this point, when there's basically no established Asian characters in comics, it would be appropriate.

What do you think Gaf?

It's a lose lose situation.
You make him white, people will scream mighty whitey.
Make him Asian and it's a stereotype.
They should just base hi off the source to at least please the fans.

He's only a stereotype if they limit his character to "I dunno... he's asian and does martial arts."

I'm not opposed to it, but I'd just like to see Iron Fist adapted on the screen perfectly. Iron Fist got me into comics, and Marvel better not fuck this one up. All you Shang-Chi lovers can wait until Phase 2.

Does not matter if he is latino, black or white, he should not be asian, because part of Iron Fist's basic concept is that he is an outsider to that particular (thanks to geographical locations, mostly chinese) group of people who know where the powers even come from.

Or he can be japanese, but I do not think that a Netflix-show is ready for japanese-chinese cultural clashes quite yet.

Don't know enough about Iron First to really care. But normally I prefer it when they stay as close to the source as possible.

He could simply be a Asian American unaware of his heritage or the country his parents came from (where Kunlun also resides).

I would have been so down for Owen Wilson like 8 years ago

now I can't think of anybody, should be any race tbh. Get some good auditions in.

wasn't he always white in the comics? I wouldn't mind if they made him Asian. they might be a bit old but Daniel Wu or Donnie Yen would be sweet.

Doesn't matter to me, I wanna see this come to fruition and done well.

The strength of a character doesn't just come from their physical description, but how well they are fleshed out and written.

That's not a bad idea. At the very least Iron fist should be a woman.

They shouldn't force a character's race or gender simply because "that's what the comics version was". Gender & race should be chosen (or excluded from consideration, maybe as V_Arnold suggests) for reasons important to the character when appropriate.

...and from there it's a weighted dice roll, maybe? Like if 5 of your last 7 new characters were girls, then maybe the new one you're putting together is a boy (if the weight on that choice is otherwise 1:1 from previous steps). I dunno.

Half Asian would make it perfect.

Fits both the "he is considered an outsider at the temple" and avoids the "white man comes to save the minorities who can't fight for themselfs" cliche

I say go all out and make Iron Fist into a female Asian.

Then, cast Emma Stone in the role.

Then what about Bride of Nine Spiders and Tiger's beautiful Daughter:?

We really want to go down "asians are only allowed to do kung fu" route

I'll always err on the side of how the comics are given the choice but I really want an someone that can act and can do the action justice. I want the full on mystical stuff not just "a really good fighter". Get all the that and still have the choice between Asian and white and then it might matter.

Why ask for the Kung Fu hero to be asian? I mean wouldn't you rather break the sterotype and have someone else? Seems pretty silly to me.

I did and still think making him a mixed Asian American would be a good idea - but either way, there's going to be a negative reaction to both choices regardless that will be swept under when the show arrives.

Asian-American (culturally American) is definitely the better option of the two, because of all the issues with the white savior trope in the modern day. Biracial would probably be the best option, but finding an actor for that would likely be difficult. You can always have him pull a Ken and dye his hair blonde.

Gender-swap would actually be terrible here, specifically because Asian men tend to get underrepresented relative to Asian women on screen in American media.

I would like Asian comic book hero in MCU, right now we only have... yeah.
Would be a good break from a white dude named Chris.
