Xenoblade Chronicles X - Review Thread

Like I expected back in the preview thread, it should settle around in the 80s. Pretty good showing overall.

The stuff the reviewers are saying about the story is a bit disheartening, but pretty much expected based on what I've seen and heard even before the reviews. I really wish they had just went with a regular main character instead of the player created one. The story might end up surprising me, though - I really hope it does as my expectations are fairly low on that side of things.

These are very high scores for a niche, highly Japanese game. Very, very promising. Not only that, but the outlets I trust (Eurogamer, for example) are reviewing it far better than those whose word means nothing to me (Polygon).

Doesn't affect me as I was buying it anyway, but I can't help but smile at what's in store. After the Japanese impressions I was quite down on the game (and I still have major problems with some of their decisions) but this picks me back up nicely.

Where have you been for the past two decades? This was at its worst circa 2004-06, when any decent game would get 90+.

Nowadays 80+ is a good score but a lot of people haven't adjusted to the new reality.

Review threads are kinda dumb by default since people are talking about other people's opinions without having any basis to form their own opinions on other than second hand info. So I'm not sure you can actually derail a review thread since it's about nothing to boot. :D

Doesn't really make any difference, Elma pretty much acts as the main character.

Xenoblade was a new franchise in a troubled genre, came out of nowhere, seemed completely impossible as a Wii U game, and had a strong narrative.

This game was always going to struggle to live up to that. Anything above 85 would be a great final result for them, imo.

Mhmm..

I'm trying to decipher this, seems artificial.

From my understanding there wasn't a lot of hype for this as there were several previews that didn't shed the best light on the game, so expectations were tempered.

I've been around since the Twilight Princess 8.8 scandal, gamers are a fickle bunch and one must wonder if there was ever a time gamers thought a 5 or 6/10 was considered the gold standard for mediocrity

TBH, this is also partially the fault of reviews. Seldom do you see scores below 5, and at the lower end scores have been inflated upward at a higher rate than the scores at at top being compressed downward.

The 3DS version is a port/re release. Those almost universally perform worse score wise than the original title. I think you go with the original score when you compare. Its not like 84 is bad or even low.

I recently bought the following games during black Friday sales:
Wolfenstein: The Old Blood
Witcher 3
Starcraft II: Complete Set (all three entries, haven't played any of them, will be playing the campaigns start to finish, starting with WoL. Probably won't touch multiplayer since my APM is about 10)
Pillars of Eternity
Halo MCC
Borderlands: The Handsome Collection

And I also have several games-with-gold titles waiting to be played on my Xbox One as soon as I find the time for those too, and more being added every month.

But Xenoblade X? I must make time for this. I don't have the time, but I must find the time. If I start now I can finish all these games by the time Black Friday rolls around again next year.

Go to Amazon or Best Buy and search for a "desktop" hard drive. That's the key word to find one with an external power supply. Then just buy whatever usb2 compatible drive you find. Even 500gb would be enough.
