Media Create Sales: Week 48, 2015 (Nov 23 - Nov 29)

That's as long as the game is actually good. With Net High's aesthetic, I doubt it will perform significantly better in the West like Zero Escape.

Impressions were pretty good, and seemed like that if you were into the style of game, you'd enjoy it.

Shinriji's demo impressions.

Offsite impressions:
finished Net High

The game was pretty much an extension of the demo, same flow, same pace, same difficulty (that is to say, none at all). Famitsu said it takes 40 hours, but normal clear is probably 20 at most. Maybe they were referring to that 21-hour trophy.

My biggest problem is when it loses momentum after Chapter 4, about 2/3rds of the way in,
that meme where a comedy always has to get serious for some reason. Chapter 5 was the turning point, and the game got less and less funny until the end,
though it was still interesting enough to finish. There's an eyebrow-raising twist, and a nice little
NTR
bad end.

It's a shame because Chapter 4 was incredibly funny, having Sugita and Kakuma (Ion's VA) in the same scene was a riot, I thought I was going to die when Sugita started imitating her, and it's going to be hard playing a nosurge game again without remembering gyaru-mode Ion.

Overall, decent and really entertaining.
The last scene says to look forward to a sequel, but who knows if they're thinking that now.

Now that I saw next week's releases again it will be another week of bombs.

The only interesting thing for hw this December is if there will be a single system that will be up YOY.

I am not sure there was a lot to negotiate. MH was going to Nintendo by default considering the success of DS and the increased power of 3DS. Only Sony offering some kind of huuge moneyhat would have prevented that.
Agreed.
It was a natural platform shifting.

Many forget 3DS is the only system this gen which performed as a market leading device (it's going to easily cross 20M soon).

I guess Media Create will count the Pokémon OR:AS (and the other 3DS packs that came out this week) separately from their respective games?

About Net High: damn, Marvelous hasn't been lucky in the past year or so.

Many forget 3DS is the only system this gen which performed as a market leading device (it's going to easily cross 20M soon).

The game also propped up the PSP on its own, so it wasn't like there was a large incentive to jump in for the inbuilt audience Sony or other third parties were going to provide.

Capcom even tried to go all in on the 3DS before paring back to what was working. They felt it was a good fit for them across the board given the struggles they were having overseas.

Hot debut for MHX - with more stocks it could have sold north to 2m, which is crazy considering it's not a mainline entry. Hw boost is super-nice, too.

Small drop compared to the previous entry (33k units) - it will sell well during holidays and is almost assured to reach the 100k mark.

Nintendo holiday legs at work.

Lowest debut ever for a Neptunia game (overcrowding?) and also a drop from Criminal Girls 1 and on par with the remake - seems NI cannot catch a break.

Seems a terrible result.

MHX is surely going to do even better than MH4G if u ask me here.^_^ Does anyone remember how much Capcom hope for this game to sell here?

Nintendo games is having a really nice buffet there.^_^ HHD, SMM, and Splat is all having good increase.

For the third party too, Yokai is also increasing and what surprise me here is that Disney magical Castle also increase. It is going to be very nice to see how far the leg for this one will bring them too.^_^

18./12. [3DS] Sumikko Gurashi: Omise Hajimerundesu <ETC> (Nippon Columbia) {2015.11.19} (¥5.184) - 6.012 / 18.892 <40-60%> (-53%)

Let's see if it can reach the 100k mark as the previous one. 3DS has been a nice platform for this small projects.

Ohh boy. ^_^ I really hope this one will do as well as the old ones so that i once again can go crazy and ask for Kuma Tomo 2 here.T_T

Wasn't there also some policy that PSP remasters had to be part of a bundle, not standalone? I'm struggling to think of another PSP remaster that didn't come with another game...
Yes, Remasters had to be bundled to pass SCEA cert. They also needed trophies, which presented another problem.

The big issue was SCEA/SCEE not updating Ad-hoc party, but there were really multiple issues at play that prevented Capcom from doing a financially viable 3rd HD localization. You'd think Sony would have their regional offices bend some rules and lend some support for their most important 3rd party exclusive but I guess not.

I dont know why Capcom didnt bothered with the PSP game. Not sure if i've seen any mentioning of that from Capcom themself. I guess maybe the previous games didnt sell THAT much, so MHP3rd wasnt a priority for the west.
By the time 3rd was up for localization pretty much all major publishers had already abandoned PSP in west. Capcom wasn't alone; Sega, Square Enix, Konami, Level 5 and Bandai Namco all skipped key potential localizations in 2011+. It wasn't really a surprise and Capcom USA was talking up 3rd HD early on anyway.

IIRC Capcom was expecting 2.5m for MHX.

Yes.

These were their two shipment goals for the year: http://www.capcom.co.jp/ir/english/data/pdf/explanation/2015/2nd/explanation_2014_2nd_04.pdf

We plan to launch “Monster Hunter X (Cross)” on November 28 in Japan. Our sales goal for this fiscal
year is 2.5 million units. We have received a very positive response at the Tokyo Game Show and at
events where people could try out this new game. Orders are climbing steadily and I am becoming
confident about reaching the sales target.

The global launch of “Street Fighter V” is scheduled for February 18, 2016. We plan to sell two million
units. The second closed beta test that took place in late October was successful. Next, we plan to use
promotional activities incorporating e-Sports and other activities with the goal of generating popularity
from this title for a long time.

---

Considering right now it already reach 1.5m with digital download, i feel it is reachable especially in holiday here.

Any time frame? Like till when is target there?
By the end of the fiscal year, so March 31st.

Animal Crossing Amiibo Festival is almost out of the top 20.

I know the game was rushed and starved for content, but Splatoon and Mario Maker got sizable bumps, and the Wii U reaped the benefits accordingly. You'd expect it to do a little better.

Hmm... thats seem reachable but it highly depends on how well the legs is in this December.^_^ Really interesting time to come.^^

3DS is also doing exceptionally well. I also think that 20 million this year for 3DS is going to be a definite lock here.

Quality matters. it is not only IP which is important. That's why HHD can do really well while AF is doing badly there.

Already done!

Though yeah it was a limited release intended as a pre-order bonus. :p

I just noticed they started selling these at Best Buy in the past week.

So I notice that Capcom actually put up the call text in English into their presentation materials this time instead of just the slides.

Here are a variety of notes from it. I think we know some of this already.

http://www.capcom.co.jp/ir/english/data/pdf/explanation/2015/2nd/explanation_2014_2nd_04.pdf

I also added some notes from the Q&A: http://www.capcom.co.jp/ir/english/data/explanation.html

1.) Capcom is very pleased with Monster Hunter 4's overseas sales.

The first strategy is strengthening the Consumer business. In this fiscal year, we are focusing on
expanding the lineup of new titles and increasing digital download sales for both full-game and add-on
contents. “Monster Hunter 4G (including Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate)”, which we launched in the
previous fiscal year, is continuing to post solid sales. Cumulative sales passed 4 million units on October
21. Furthermore, the overseas version of this game, which we call “Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate”, has
topped one million units. This is the first time a title in this series has reached one million units in
overseas sales. I believe this is a very significant accomplishment with respect to the future overseas
growth of the “Monster Hunter” franchise.

2.) Capcom is notably optimistic about Dragon's Dogma Online.

The second strategy is to step up the Online games business. For some time, we have been working on
enlarging the title lineup in our Online business. Near the end of the first half, we started operations for
major titles of this fiscal year in the PC Online and Mobile Contents. On August 27, we started services
for the online game “Dragon’s Dogma Online”. The launch was very successful. There are now more than
one million downloads and more than 100,000 simultaneous players. I believe this title is about to
become one of Japan’s leading online games.

3.) Monster Hunter Explore is exceeding expectations.

In the Mobile Contents, we started distributing “Monster Hunter Explorer” in September. The title
immediately generated a very good response.

...

In the Mobile Contents, the operation of “Monster Hunter Explorer” is the most important item
concerning the Capcom brand. Performance is surpassing our expectations with downloads now
approaching three million. We plan to strengthen ties with other Capcom brand titles and take other
actions to attract even more users.

4.) Capcom feels mobile gamers are growing accustomed to "full-scale games" (aka stuff like Monster Hunter Explore or White Cat Project) and will be taking this approach with more of their mobile games and IPs.

What is your strategy for Mobile Contents starting in the next fiscal year in response to the good performance of "Monster Hunter Explorer"?
Our analysis of "Monster Hunter Explorer" indicates that casual users who enjoy games on mobile devices are slowly beginning to grow accustomed to full-scale games. Starting in the next fiscal year, we will study ways to use titles that incorporate our own content while utilizing experience gained from "Monster Hunter Explorer".

5.) Capcom is sticking to their plan and hiring more PC Online and mobile staff.

Do you plan to increase the number of developers in the Mobile Contents sector?
Mobile Contents and PC Online are important business segments where we foresee more growth. As a result, we believe that we need to increase the number of employees in these areas.

6.) The Resident Evil 2 "remake" is referred to as a "remaster". It's not entirely clear what it is at the moment since they seem a bit loose with the way they use those two terms.

In addition, we continue to make progress with our digital download strategy and with re-make of older
titles. In the fourth quarter, we plan to start selling a remastered version of “Resident Evil 0” as both
packaged software and a download. We have also decided to create a remastered version of “Resident
Evil 2”.

Wow, look at those Nintendo holiday bumps. That's not a good drop for Animal Flopping: amiibo Bombstival, too low. Needs to drop more.

Kind of crazy how the Wii U software situation changed b/w the same week in 2014 vs. 2015....

03./08. [WIU] Splatoon # <ACT> (Nintendo) {2015.05.28} (¥6.156) - 23.823 / 825.940 (+35%)
04./11. [WIU] Super Mario Maker # <ACT> (Nintendo) {2015.09.10} (¥6.156) - 18.639 / 410.432 (+41%)
(w/ Taiko actually charting this time and selling slightly better... AC: AF is a complete bomb though).

13./15. [WIU] Mario Kart 8 # <RCE> (Nintendo) {2014.05.29} (¥6.156) - 12.742 / 734.626 (+46%)
14./10. [WIU] Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker <ADV> (Nintendo) {2014.11.13} (¥3.996) - 12.211 / 54.053 (-12%)

Now that I saw next week's releases again it will be another week of bombs.

The only interesting thing for hw this December is if there will be a single system that will be up YOY.

Isn't it very likely the Wii U will be up YoY even in December?

Amazing hardware sales for 3DS and Monster Hunter X. I guess folks were upgrading to the New 3DS/XL with this game.

It's reached over 1.6m with digital going by it's eShop chart position.

Nintendo really fucked up with amiibo Festival. A half hearted Wii U New Leaf conversion (a la City Folk) probably would've been nearly as cheap to make and sold significantly more.

It bombing so hard hopefully makes them reevaluate both their franchising spinoffs and milking amiibo strategies going forward.

I think pricing was a significant problem with this title. I think it could have done decently as an amiibo complement (like buy an AC Amiibo, get a free game via DL) as opposed to trying to sell it as an actual $60 retail title, which is insane for how little "game" there is. Plus, Nintendo really needs to learn that for Amiibo related titles, you should never have to place the Amiibo on the GamePad every turn... not sure why they did that in both Mario Party 10 and this.

I actually feel that Amiibo festival is even more cheaper to made than New Leaf port here after all, they already had all the assets in Wii U. They just need to use them. And of course the profit gain from Amiibo is going to be the biggest point here.

Then the correct is over 1,7m.

Wait, it already reach 1.7m? Won't this made that 2.5 million..... very modest expectation then?

Square Enix also has updates as of November 24th.

http://www.hd.square-enix.com/eng/ir/library/docs/151106/page01.html

1.) Square Enix Japan really wants to get into eSports, even though their titles have struggled so far. Expect lots of eSports, including eSports games on consoles in the future.

Square Enix said:
In the PC browser game space, we have begun offering several ambitious titles to meet e-sports demand in Japan. We posted valuation losses on games of that nature that were struggling to produce adequate earnings. We are less-experienced in the new genre of e-sports, which prevented us from gaining player acceptance in some cases. While we need to work to develop e-sports offerings over the long term, we wanted to recognize the valuation losses on our books earlier rather than later. Because of the strategic value of the e-sports genre, we will remain tenacious in our efforts in that space, including considering offerings for consumer game consoles, as well as global roll-outs.

2.) Square Enix seems very happy with Mobius Final Fantasy. They also called out Final Fantasy Grandmasters, Dragon Quest of the Stars, and Final Fantasy: Brave Exvius as strong launches (they're in Q3 though so there's not too much here).

On the whole, our Games for Smart Devices/PC Browsers delivered a strong performance in both 1Q and 2Q. 2Q saw the launch of MOBIUS FINAL FANTASY, which is performing very well thanks to a great reception from players.

Among our recent launches, we have had great feedback from the market on HOSHI NO DRAGON QUEST, FINAL FANTASY BRAVE EXVIUS, and FINAL FANTASY GRAND MASTERS.

3.) They will be making more new IPs on mobile again, with several releasing in the second half of this fiscal year. Alice Order (from the Million Arthur people) is presumably one of them, and that loli waifu collection game another.

This slide shows the main titles for Smart Devices/PC Browsers we currently offer.

Many of these titles leverage existing IP, but going forward we would like to be more proactive in offering games featuring new IP. We plan to launch several such titles in 2H.

4.) Square Enix did a bunch of write-downs across their various products. They wrote off their less successful mobile games, their eSports titles (even the ones they're still updating), and I believe some console and MMO related expenses. They also wrote off Shinra (their newest cloud service company). I think there might have been arcade expenses too? Basically expect to see their results a bit inflated going forward since they went and took all the losses up front last quarter.

---

As a side note, both Capcom and Square Enix note that the arcade scene is doing badly, though Square Enix is happy with their personal results.

Yeah, I feel that Capcom simply saw a much more 3D-friendly (in more ways than one) handheld from Nintendo and was going to spend less on Sony handhelds no matter what. Any deal with Nintendo about Monster Hunter was like icing on the cake.

Resident Evil: Revelations is still at least on a technical level probably the best looking game on the platform; yet it came out at the beginning of 2012! Capcom put an insane amount of effort into 3DS even early on.

So we are going to see S-E version of Umbrella Corps here?...... Wait Shinra Corps FF. That is a good one.^_^

So far they've made a mech shooting game and a Lord of Vermillion MOBA as far as Japan goes.

There's also the PC version of Gunslinger Stratos unless I'm imagining things.

Good. That project deserves to burn.

And yet I bought it still ;.; I haven't opened or played it yet. I needed Isabelle amiibo, Nintendo was holding her hostage!

About Capcom's Monster Hunter 2.5 million target, does it include overseas as usually MH titles are released in Q4?

Just asking, i Know is at least over 1.62 million since, if i remember correctly, Ultimate sold ~140,000 digitally.

I may be wrong.

It's #10 on the eshop rankings, maybe more depending on if the official site is up to date.

My cousin bought it and has generally enjoyed it with her son but its not worth the price.

What are the odds Nintendo will try to position a Monster Hunter game at NX' launch?

There will most likely be a Monster Hunter game, weither it be an enhanced version or new game, you can count on one to launch the first year of the NX launch if history repeats itself.

Well, looking at the Monster Hunter release cycle:

2004: Monster Hunter
2005: Monster Hunter G, Monster Hunter Freedom
2006: Monster Hunter 2
2007: Monster Hunter Freedom 2
2008: Monster Hunter Freedom Unite
2009: Monster Hunter Tri
2010: Monster Hunter Portable 3rd
2011: Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate
2012:
2013: Monster Hunter 4
2014: Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate
2015: Monster Hunter X

It would be improbable for there to be no traditional Monster Hunter for Fall 2016.

I still say that Stories is launchies cross-gen.

I'm thinking it will release in the late Spring or early Summer to take advantage of children being on vacation.

It could still show up with a port or enhanced edition at launch under that scenario.

This way it also gets out of the way of whatever the Fall Monster Hunter game is, assuming it exists.

I know it's an enhanced port, but you forgot Monster Hunter 3G HD Version in 2012.

...Which is also what I think it could happen right at NX's launch (if there's one NX device released next year; in case both SKU are released and not at the same time, right at one of the two launches): Monster Hunter X HD Version, with more enhancements than what happened from MH3G and MH3G HD Version. MHX hasn't been announced for the West yet, despite the MH4U's big (and continued) success over here, and that's another factor that makes me think about the possibilities of MHXHD being a thing.
