Final Fantasy VII Remake is a multi-part series

If they don't condense it too much it could be a great format. Reactor raid episode, shinra hq episode, Nibelheim flashback episode, etc. A decent amount of the original game is filler that wouldn't really fly in a modern context.

;)

Wasn't it $50?

If the changes to the gameplay hadn't already completely deflated my hype for the remake this certainly has. Unless this turns out awesome I think I'll pass.

Thinking about this, could it be that the game will be cut up into different parts, to have great focus on some characters?

-Part I: Focus on Cloud and Avalanche
-Part II: Continue Cloud's journey
-Part III: Backstory with Zack (Crisis Core re-done?)
-Part IV: Vicent and Yuffe focused
-Part V: Conclusion to Cloud's story
-Epilogue: Playable version of Advent Children

They could mean that through the FFVII Remake, they want to retell EVERYTHING that is part of the FFVII world. If that is the case....this isn't too bad then.

It allows focus on elements not covered in the original game alongside re-doing elements that people wanted to see more of (Zack) or want to see fixed up/expanded (Vicent).

Either way, this is both good and bad news, so they better explain this in more detail to us at some point :l.

I just can't believe it. This better be some kind of FF7 is one part and the other installments are Crisis Core and the like.

FUCK.

This is one of the most awesome threads I've read in a while. A lot of responses are fantastically hilarious.

"with each entry providing its own unique experience."

This could effectively allow them to omit sections of the original FFVII experience. Not good news guys.

I can see it now. Text based written story to fill in the player on what happened between episodes.

Aaaaaaand cue the internet overreacting. We have literally no clue what that sentence actually means for how the game will be delivered. Its a long ways off. Im going to wait to see what they actually mean before I get pissy.

You know, this is probably going to be a great set of games, but I think it's time we start accepting that this is not going to be what many of us were expecting at the start.

Enjoy the FF VII re-release on PS4 and look at the Remake as an entirely new interpretation.

So basically they're pulling a Starcraft 2, partially because that means it'll at least start to come out this fucking decade and partially because it makes them more money and they know people will buy it. Kind of curious as to how many parts it'll be and where in the story they'll start/end episodes. Will it be something like a third of the game as a full-priced disc per year for three years, or something more granular where it's a $15-20 episode every few months?

To be fair to Squeenix here, you have to keep in mind that with the level of presentation they want any given piece of the original game's content will not only cost more to make but also take more time to complete (because cutscenes that consist purely of text boxes take much less time to get through than voice-acted ones, unless you're a ridiculously slow reader.) A faithful recreation of the original in a $60 package would have at least twice the runtime of the original (so most people would probably not even bother finishing it) and most likely not make a profit. So either they do this, they cram shitloads of DLC and similar horseshit in there, or they just cut major parts of the game.

Honestly, I think I'd rather see big budget JRPGs go in this direction than the route WRPGs have gone in of padding a 15-20-hour game to 50+ with lots of cheap open world filler busywork.

I'll obviously reserve complete judgment until the full details are revealed but I'd be lying if I said my heart didn't sink a bit when I read that press release in my email.

I am glad to see most of NeoGAF is against this idea. I can't believe how can anyone defend this garbage practice.
What practice? Honestly, what practice? I'm embarrassed by all the "fuck this I'm out" posts over a quote that could be interpreted dozens of ways.

If this turns out to be "splitting the game in parts" and not the whole "connected universe thing", then I sure hope we can deliver the biggest twitter shitstorm the internet has ever witnessed to SE.

I've now entered Stage 1 of grief.

What if the "Final Fantasy VII Remake" is like a second Final Fantasy VII Compilation? You have the remake of the base game as the first release, then we start to get sequels like FFVII-2 and spinoffs like Dirge of Cerberus 2 (lol)?

It could explain what they meant by "told across a multi-part series, with each entry providing its own unique experience."

Until I see otherwise I feel this is clearly cause they can't make the overworld. FFVII is too huge a game for the graphics we want, so instead of coming up with a way to put the overworld they will remove it.

This will be like FFXIII a, linear chunks of the story across the many locations of FFVII but you don't get to explore or control where you go like you did in the original.

I hope I am wrong but I don't see anyway they can recreate FFVII episodically, it's impossible.

Good points all around.

I share similar sentiments.

I've been watching some FFVII Let's Plays and I'm assuming tons of cut--Bestiary, Scenarios, even some Towns.

FFVII is a massive game in terms of assets, even back then.

They're gonna focus very much on the main story and cut a lot of the fat.

Maybe it will be done a la RE: revelations 2 where all the episodes can be purchased at the same time in some kind of retail package (single or multiple discs).

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO JUST NO !!!

Take your time and make it right or don't make it at all, damn Square is so full of shit sometimes.

Dude if that is the pace that they decide to release the game at, most of us won't live to see the ending. If Shinra HQ was a single episode the game would need to be at least 100 episodes....

Gentlemen, we can rebuild it. We have the capability to make the world's first enhanced store. Steam will be that store. Better than it was before.
I don't mind it being episodic, but as someone who has already pre-ordered I think SquareEnix needs to clarify a few things with this statement. Does the $60 I already spent give me all of the "episodes"? Did they mean VII, VII-2, and VII-3, all with separate full length stories?

Funny how Square said some years ago that they didn't want to remake FF7 because they don't want to mess it up and the first thing they do when they start the remake is mess it up.

Currently polling second in Australia's federal election (first in the Gold Coast), this feral may one day be your Bogan King.
Valve announces episodic series to end critically acclaimed game arc. Third and final entry never releases and never spoken of again.

Frequently requested remake of classic RPG announced 18 years after the original. Will be released episodically.

Man, I'm with a lot of people (haven't read this thread) that this DOES fuckin' suck. But things have to change on both sides, there has to be a way to make a game disc with all of its content on it valuable. A variable game pricing scheme would be ideal, although it could cause more shit then it is worth.

But the truth is, these games ARE SO FUCKING expensive to make nowadays. Just look at comparisons between the remake and the original, it takes huge teams to do even the smallest of things now and charging the same price (if not cheaper) just doesn't cut it.

With that said, there is literally nothing that could be done to fix this issues and everyone is going to be annoyed on both sides until everyone gives up and the industry dies. The end.

Stop with the apologism.

Few are excited for FFXV. If you are gonna blow out a budget on a game, 7 would be it.

It was too good to be true...

So what would you guys prefer, that they take 10 years to remake the full game or release an episode every 2 years? If its the former, just wait to play it all in 10 years!

It's not the length of time that's the issue, it's how the story gets hacked up in order to make the episodic format work. It doesn't take a genius to see where this is going. You won't be getting the full FF7 spread out over time, you'll be selections/highlights. And paying more for it in the end. It's bullshit.

Except Midgar is like 5 hours of the game, if that. There's an entire overworld and dozens of locations to explore that make up the rest of it. Plus mini-games etc. I mean any way you slice it (.....) this is going to be gutted mercilessly.

Also sayonnara Overworld Map-san.

But like I said, they flesh it out. So Midgar is much bigger. More things to do. Like, they can add a whole bunch without fucking up the story.

Midgar was just an example as well. They can go past Midgar obviously.

But I'll be honest, I'm kind of coming around to this idea if it is the way I think it is. Each part being able to have more meat on it now that they aren't forced to cram everything to fit into the time/budget.

Could not be that bad of an idea.

Oh and people who are defending saying it's a long game lets release witcher 3 in episodic release too. Since you know its a 200+ hour game with world 2 times maybe 3 times the size of FFVII. I mean it's clearly too long to release it in one disk. Freaking no talent hacks at SE. Maybe they run a game past 30 fps next time.

If you stop and think about it, it makes sense and is actually a good thing.

No one wants to wait 6 to 8 years for this.

BUT, if we get part one Holliday 2016, part two Holliday 2018, part three Holliday 2020 and the master collection plus all the extras, in 2021, perhaps with a new console release, we all can all enjoy it as it comes. I personally would pay $200 for this remake. And if every release comes with an LE version, I'll put down more lol.

I'm confused you say no-one wants to wait 6-8 years for this then lay down a schedule for 6 year wait for the full complete remake anyway. :/

Ok, actually, they said "multi-part". I doubt this is going to be episodic. They'll just release more games to tell the FF7 story.

My speculation:

Final Fantasy VII: This will be the main game
Final Fantasy VII-2: Crisis Core: Yep, a remake of Crisis Core
Final Fantasy VII-3: Maybe a post-Advent Children game?

I can only hope right now. If they actually are dividing the main FF7 story into many parts, I won't buy this game. Such bullshit will never see my money.

My God I hope you're right. Anything else is a disappointment :(

It will be fine. This is just the usual overreaction but it will all be good upon release and afterward. Especially if it means it will be coming sooner rather than later.

Hype still intact!

I find it funny how SE has been explaining it for years and years, that FF7 remake would not be feasible financially. If this was true for the PS3 days then it is even more true today.

Did people magically think that somehow they'd manage to make this on the cheap or on the quick?

Nobody should ever react to anything unless they have all the facts.
But how do you know if you have all of the facts? Better keep waiting.
It's safer to just not react to anything at all. There might be more facts you don't have.

Could we at least update the misleading thread title? There isn't any confirmation it will be episodic, just that it will be multi-part.

Man, I'm kinda okay with this. We've all played the game before and know how the story goes. Do we need to play the whole remake from start to finish in one go?

If this means I can start playing the game sooner, I'm all for it. Not to mention, it gives them more time to polish each episode to our impossible standards (with any hope). It would also explain why they could show so much of the opening area in the most recent trailer, perhaps?

The reasonable response – but, alas, this is an FF thread.
