Freedom Planet 2 In Development

Nice!

Freedom Planet was so damn good. It felt like something out of the Saturn era.

The trailer threw me off, but the character sprites look a lot closer to the original game.
All of the new ideas and changes sound great.

The main melody has always sounded like it was from another game or song. It's been killing me since I played the demo back in '13.

The closest I can get to is the chorus from "You'll Be in My Heart" by Phil Collins from Tarzan. But I'm thinking of something faster paced and more synthy. Maybe my circuits are looping in on themselves.

I really wanted to like the first game, but god damn the levels were soooooo looooong. It's the kind of game I'd like to play in short bursts, but I have to dedicate a good 30+ minutes to the game if I sit down and play it at all. And that's in classic mode, without the awful cutscenes.

For the love of god please make the stages significantly shorter. Stages dragging on way too long was a huge issue I had with the first. Even the longest stage in a game like this shouldn't reach the ten minute mark unless it's a boss fight you keep failing on or something.

Please make the levels shorter, otherwise I loved the game.

I only played the game once but yeah the level size were a turn off for me

Really? Seriously the pacing is something they need to fix in the sequel, like no more pointless slumber parties.

Something they are working on even for the first game. from the beta patch notes.
"The treehouse movie scene has been shortened significantly for Lilac and Carol. (Unessential filler) "

There's also some other dialogue they are cutting.

That is good to know actually.

All these level size complaints are so bizarre to me. Every stage in Freedom Planet actually has two acts like classic Sonic, only they don't have act clear screens breaking them up, and you immediately go from one to the next, as indicated by the change in music.

That's the problem.

Awesome! Freedom Planet is one of my favorite games and was my personal GOTY in 2014! Based on the new trailer, I can't help but wonder if it'll have some 2D animated cutscenes at parts throughout the game, sort of like Mega Man X games. I hope it does! It looks cool!

EDIT: I'm kind of sad people think the stages were too long. I personally LOVE the length of the levels and detest the idea of short levels in such a game. I want to spend a good 20 minutes in a level, not beat it in like 5. Short levels don't give me enough time to enjoy the music or struggle with losing health over time or take in the atmosphere. It would've been terrible if Thermal Base especially could be beat really quickly, considering the events that transpired before and after it.

Making those screen changes an actual obvious saved checkpoint is the only major change I'd make to the game as it is. I don't mind the level lengths aside from that. At least when you die you go back to that point anyway. I wouldn't want levels shortened too much.

As for story pacing as long as there is still a story light classic mode I don't care.

The level length in the game was a double edge sword. On one hand it was annoying that you couldn't save your progress until you beat the boss. On the other hand the level length has the player immersed in the game and truly make you feel accomplished when you complete a level, as opposed to most platformers where a level can be completed in a few minutes.

FP was pretty much my 2014 GOTY, so I'm excited to see a sequel with a better budget and professionals on board, including Taxman, Falk and Chris friggn' Sabat.

If that's the case then the issue is really more psychological than a fault of the game.

Pretty much this. FP's levels are not really any longer than those in Sonic 3&K, the difference is the way the 'acts' are divided are not as blatantly obvious (I say "blatant" because all the other indicators of an act change are still there, the only thing that isn't is the spinny sign and the act transition sequence itself).

If I understand this right, I'll be playing a SEGA Genesis inspired and visually resembling game by 2018 at the earliest.
What a time to be alive.

Carol still looks way kewler than Lilac

This makes me really excited. My only complaint so far is that Lilac has gone from looking iconic to looking like an anime character. Seriously, get more of her original eyes and some more of that solid purple-pink back into that design pronto.

Brevon isn't in FP2.

Apparently he failed to get the Kingdom Stone to power his spaceship so he swam back to the nearest star system or something.

Torque isn't anywhere in sight either :(

Cool trailer. You know shit's gettin' serious when they start using guitars :P I wasn't the biggest fan of the first game, too many bosses required me to jump around a lot to get in range for hitting them, was kind of annoying (played the green cat char though, maybe that was the problem). Anyways, I wish it the best, I think the series has a lot of promise at the very least.

Oooo this is great news! I liked the first game quite a bit -- it was certainly a love letter to Sonic and I really enjoyed the game play. I can't say much about the story but it was a great little game. It oozes with passion.

I like all the character sprite/character updates outside of Lilac's -- she looks more humanoid than "water dragon" to me. Really, really great news about Taxman working on physics/programming. He's a genius with games like this and this game is sure to have solid mechanics as a result. I like the idea behind burning an extra life for a second chance during a boss fight, that should make for some pretty epic moments in the game. I like how they're trying out new things rather than just sticking to the formula and mechanics of the first.
