So it will be a while before the Blu-Ray drops in price. Oh well, no disaster, still expecting that I have friends that want to go see it in cinema.

I think it's for the best, honestly.

Remember that the OT wasn't entirely directed by George with an iron fist like the prequels were. The OT was directed by a different guy each film.

A lot of people complain that Abrams relies too much on references and stuff from other films so it's probably for the better they have another director come in with some more originality.

I don't think that's entirely or mostly Abrams fault. Disney probably wanted to get back the old fanbase and play it save due to the high criticism of the prequels, but on the other hand Star Trek Into Darkness was basically a remake of Wrath of Khan.

And TFA really isn't a remake of ANH. I think that belief is rudimentary and wholly misplaced. It has thematic similarities, homages perhaps, but it's still a very different movie with greatly differing characters, narrative, overall sense of pacing and spectacle.

It's a remake of the whole OT with a large of A new Hope, like I said it's basically to get rid of the bad after taste from the prequels.

Technically, 12 days, since it opened in some foreign markets on the 16th. But it could be 11 days if it broke $1 billion yesterday -- we need to see the daily International breakdown for Fri/Sat/Sun to know for sure.

Jurassic World did it in 13 days, and it got pretty close at $980 million in 12 days (but it had China adding $168 million).

Yup, I saw it on the 16th. I just couldn't be arsed to count the exact days so went with about 10 which is close enough

Really? It seems about right to me.
With as popular as its been and with how well it's been reviewed, I'd expect high 7s at least. That would be more in line with similar well reviewed blockbusters. I wonder if there's just an influx of spiteful haters reviewing.

I wonder if this will break Gone With The Wind's All time ticket number, that is the most impressive stat in all of cinema history. I think that's a better way to judge a movie's historical place. With that being said, The Force Awakens will still slaughter every domestic recored that Avatar owns.

7 is still "good" just not great.

It will something something just as impressive. It will probably make it to top 10 movies adjusted for inflation just on its initial run.

Gone with the Wind was re-released many times and ran forever.

I'll die happy when people stop regurgitating "ANH Clone" anytime TFA is brought up. There are more ways it is different than the same anywho. Or are people grumpy it made a lot of money and they don't like it?

Once the initial swell of nostalgia washes over, you come to the realization that TFA didn't have much of a story, had so-so VFX, was all just a setup for the next two Star Wars saga films, and is an overall mediocre film.

Haribi

Why isn't there a Star Wars RPG? And wouldn't James Bond make for a pretty good FPS?
How did The Revenant make so little money?

Wants the largest console games publisher to avoid Nintendo's platforms.

It's not a clone, it's a remake.

I have never seen this type of split

Domestic: $544,573,329 49.9%
+ Foreign: $546,000,000 50.1%

HOLLYHELL. Domestically this movie is killing it
Close to 50% split? That must have happened before (or am I missing something?).

Nice results. The film's essentially a "play safe" retread of best bits of OT but to be fair after the prequels that's just what I (and clearly the market) wanted and to see enough of original crew while passing on the torch. Next one will be the real test because that's gonna have to continue the story forward again with more originality.

I wonder what the % of Avatar dropped in it's second weekend.

38% isn't nearly as high as most movies, but it still feels higher than I expected. The theater I was at yesterday was still packed, we preordered tickets and still had six seats to choose from with 4 people. And others were being turned away from selling out still.

With Oscar buzz going for that film, I think it might save it.

Remember that Star Wars obliterated the opening weekend record. A 38% drop from THAT is incredible.

For comparison.

Avatar opened Dec 18, 2009. After 12 days, the totals were:
Domestic gross of $250,419,951.
Foreign gross of $476,192,825.
Total gross of $726,612,776.

TFA opened Dec 18, 2015. After 10 days, the totals are:
Domestic gross of $544,573,329.
Foreign gross of $546,000,00.
Total gross of $1,090,573,329.

Of course Avatar had crazy legs and insane overseas takes.

Creed still in the top 10, lost about 900 theaters, only dropped 8.2%

Gonna cross 100 mil on a 35 mil budget.

One of the best movies of the year.

Yeah, I don't think there is any doubt that part of the reason that he got the nod is because he was taking the story exactly where Lucasfilm and Disney wanted him to go.
