Yeah its kind of crazy to me MS didn't just stick to that after the huge success they had with the 360. PS4 basically took the 360 strategy and just swept in and dominated the market.

MS focused too much on what caused the 360 to boom after 2008 instead of looking at the period that caused the 360 to get praise from the audience that buys consoles during the early part of the gen (2005-2008).

Losing 90 million potential costumers is troubling. Unless you think the industry consolidating even more and being even more focused on fewer but bigger than ever titles by a handful of companies is healthy. It may be sustainable for a good while catering to the core but what the industry thrives on is the casuals.

There are still PLENTY of casuals, again its an off base argument.

The Wii sold millions of consoles to people that have never bought a console and will likely never buy one again.

I'm not saying the industry is GROWING at scale because it isn't. I'm saying its in no danger to the people that come to NeoGAF.

If you are an individual posting on this website and reading this thread, the games you are interested in are in no danger of going anywhere.

The 1m unit WW number very likely legit based on previous math some of us did and the mins we needed to see in Dec for a certain title.

Sorry I missed the context here. Are we talking about TR or something else?
Edit: Seems like it's TR.

Btw, with Halo 5's decline... Does that pretty much make Nintendo really the only 1st party who really has much sway using exclusives (looking at 3DS here mostly, although Wii U was pretty much only exclusives as well)?

I won't be here for long, and probably I won't get an answer till tomorrow morning here in Italy, so...my personal numbers requests :p

- Xenoblade Chronicles X
- Yokai Watch
- Zelda: Triforce Heroes
- Yoshi's Wolly World

+1 to these requests :).

The industry will have to adapt or should i say the companies .
Make games on every platform to target each consumer base.
For eg like SE is doing now and other western companies .

Yep if your a fan of AAA games they not going anywhere .
And companies making a good amount of money on DD and DLC.

R6 Seige looking good at #7 if entry into the top 10 is > 625k. Doing better than the UK. I remember the bomba thread for its debut at ~76k on the PAL chart.

The UK doesn't like Bloodbourne. But they don't like The Order 1886, either. It kinda balances out.

Going back to the US and NPD, I'd like to know if RotTR did better than November's ~200k?

There it is.

They lost completely when designed Xbox One around the "all-in-one home entertainment system" idea. Plus they thought that Kinect default was a great idea, so great that sell the console for $500 made sense.

Is that sold to consumers, or shipped through?
Does that include PlayStation plus copies , bundles and promo copies?

I need to be 200% sure.

Those are sell through numbers, they don't include PS+ copies, but bundles & whatnot are always included.

I would say plenty of casuals are buying PS4s and Xbox Ones. Now from my own POV the 3rd party software on Wii was mostly trash so as long as the games I want keep getting made the industry is fine.

And mobile gaming is going strong so those shovelware makers are still thriving, just on a different platform

Yes but that is offset by DD and DLC .

I don't think this is even remotely close to being true. Game budgets have went up an order of magnitude and I can't see that being enough to make up the difference. There is a reason why you see the money being poured more and more into a few select franchises.

They definitely have a lot of work to be done still, but I think too many people are hung up on being number 1. The Xbox One is putting up great numbers regardless of where the PS4 is at. Yes, they still need to grow the install base because that brings all the other avenues of revenue to them.

They're going to end up losing 20 million or more HW sales in just one generation. Meanwhile their main competitor is making huge gains. They may well up being outsold 2 to 1 this generation. In isolation the xbone isn't a complete failure. It's the general trajectory they're in that has to be a concern.

I don't think Sony's rebranding was the thing that allowed it to start catching up, I think it was a slew of incredibly highly critically acclaimed games, on top of more aggressive price matching.
I think it pretty much comes down to price and the fact that playstation simply has a lot of mindshare going towards it. They have the history of the PS1 and PS2 behind them. If anything they were just getting back the customers that were already theirs. MS don't have that sort of history in this industry and as such I think it will be much harder to turn things around.

One of the biggest complaints about the Order was its recycled boss fights and werewolf encounters. Apart from completion time it was the single biggest complaint leveled against the game. My comment was in regards to the fact that despite Halo 5 being just as much an offender on this front it is hardly ever mentioned when referencing the game. Considering the massive uproar about one and not the other I find that odd.

Also *sensible chuckle* at your appeal to authority argument for coop split screen. 343s misinterpretation of its importance does not diminish its importance in any way.

Sure there were some people that wanted it and were disappointed perhaps it caused them some sales I didn't dispute that but even if they misinterpreted its importance, I personally didn't find it that much of an omission really and I know plenty of others that are the same.

As I said about TO though, that campaign was all there was, no co-op, no multiplayer, you cant skip the cut-scenes (which annoyed people) among other faults, that impression of doing the same thing multiple times over is something that sticks much less in a longer game which also has multiplayer modes and offers you more. Perhaps people thought the recycled content was better in Halo?

Generally speaking Halo just had a lot more gameplay variety even with the Warden fights re-appearing, I would say.

MGSV was just the fastest timed exclusive we've seen so far. 4 whole minutes.
Heh.
I mean, that was during the E3 conference, he sends out a whole bunch of tweets in a short time frame, I'd give him the benefit of the doubt that it was a mistake.
But then again he's an Xbox employee, so...

Yeah, just a total misunderstanding of what was driving their brand. They seem to be getting much better about learning where they went wrong so hopefully the next Xbox won't launch in anywhere near the state the Bone did

But PS4 had more exclusives through out the year. Argue what you want about how big they were, tons of niche games do the same as a few big ones.

Sales don't back this up. The games that are pushing both consoles the most are the popular games that are available on both.

If someone took all of the 2015 PS4's exclusives away then I would still feel very confident in saying that the PS4 would have still sold similarly (NPD).

can we please have a succinct statement regarding the non-inclusion of bundled software in the OP please?

every thread, every month is brutal with the surprise sale exclamations and then explaining of 'not including bundles'

And that NPD is United States Only...That has to be repeated over and over as well...it gets old..

I'm going to take a moment and commend Sony on turning their holiday sales around this year. Back in Q1 2015, I thought(and it seemed many others here on GAF as well at the time) that MS had this holiday season in the bag, especially as the months kept moving forward & things kept getting moved out of Sony's Q4 2015 & into 2016. Once E3 came & we saw the landscape of co-marketing 3rd party deals vs. 'The Greatest lineup in Xbox History', I started to think 'maybe Sony could at least close the sales gap & not lose as bad as it did last November'.

Up until August/September, Sony was absolutely the underdog in terms of sales potential for the holiday season imo. Even though the potential gap kept closing in my mind between the two for Nov & Dec, I still found myself thinking MS would be too hard to beat in NA off the backs of Halo 5 & the FO4 comarketing/bundle. And yet, here we are. Sony played the hand it was dealt masterfully.

Looks like an honest mistake to me. Something like that wouldn't last long on the internet so I don't even know what the purpose behind doing something like that intentionally would even be.

Halo 5 vs The Order 1866
Greenberg vs GAF
Tomb Raider vs fact that it's sold 1 million worldwide

Is the NPD thread always this much . . . fun lol

Is it too late though? The PS3 was a huge step backwards by Sony and gave MS the chance they needed to get a foothold in the market. Now Sony is back dominating and there is no guarantee they will make a mistake like that again. I think if Sony plays things right it will be very hard for xbox to gain much ground in the market.

Spencer at the helm, Nutella support, new Microsoft attitude, new Microsoft approach towards hardware, desperation to get back that market share, possibly launching one year earlier... should lead to great things for the next Xbox.

Man, GTA V is something borderline ridiculous at this stage.

#6 more than 1 year later.

It does also include sales of 360 and PS3, which will certainly help with the unit figures. The game is the 2nd most played game on Xbox (after COD)

...lacks reading comprehension.
They lost completely when designed Xbox One around the "all-in-one home entertainment system" idea. Plus they thought that Kinect default was a great idea, so great that sell the console for $500 made sense.

Well, at that point where they designed the system 50 % of all Xbox Live useage came from media consumption apps like Netflix and Youtube and sales of 360 had just exploded because of new SKU and Kinect. Of course by the time they presented Xbox One everybody knew Kinect sucked but they didn't have the balls to delay their console and give Sony a headstart. So we got what we got.

How much more have games budget gone up comapre to last gen ?
We know that companies make over 2 times the profit on DD and that not counting DLC .
The reason for that is simple making 5 or 6 different AAA games ( since they cost so much )and 4 of them failing make no sense.
That is why companies are now investing into 1 or 2 new IP and putting everything behind to get better returns .
We were seeing that since last gen which why companies like EA cut down on the number of games they were making .

God of War and Uncharted have never been big sellers in the grand scheme of videogames , they are critically acclaimed and are held in high regard by the hardcore but always struggled to sell more than a couple of million.
Didn't Halo 3 famously ourself uncharted 1/2 GoW3/ Killzone 2 , resistance 1/2 combined?

The last of Us is the first Sony AAA franchise since Gran turismo to play with the big boys.
Over 6 million for UC3 and more than 21 million for UC franchise are not big? It's rather good for an exclusive on a platform which was the worst selling during most of the timeframe these games were on the shelves, don't you think?

Halo 3 sold around 15 million and as such it's unlikely to have outsold even just all UCs let alone the rest of PS3 exclusive franchises.

It's a combination. Not just exclusive and multiplat games. His sentiment about exclusives, helping, however, makes total sense.

What Top 10 selling game launched in 2015 wasn't on PlayStation? Halo 5?

That is a great spin.

lol actually Halo 5 is not there

Call of Duty: Black Ops III (Activision Blizzard | Xbox One, PS4, 360, PS3, PC)
Madden NFL 16 (Electronic Arts | PS4, Xbox One, 360, PS3)
Fallout 4 (Bethesda Softworks | PS4, Xbox One, PC)
Star Wars: Battlefront (Electronic Arts | Xbox One, PS4, PC)
Grand Theft Auto V (Take-Two | PS4, Xbox One) 360, PS3, PC)

Yeah I know, I was talking about the Gears comparison.

I see.

Well I also agree that at this point the UC franchise may be actually bigger than Gears, given its meteoric rise in popularity, but UC4 will really be the proof in the pudding regarding this imo.
