Fire Emblem Fates' localization doesn't have the petting minigame

Well, I'd still like a professionally-done translation, just with the cut content back in. If there was a way to have that and the fan-translated skinship scenes, I'd be all for it.

It seems the fan translation community is trying to figure out ways to add the skinship back into the US special edition version, so we'll see I guess.

well it depends if nintendo wipes it completely from the source. if its left in tact, like kotor's 2 content.. then i'm assuming it could be done easily. But the key thing i'm worried about for the english translation is seeing if content gets altered thats story relevant aka invisible kingdom route. (i'm importing but i'd like to know if this is a localization job or a translation job with the only cuts being that mini game and that issue with sorielli (or whatever her name is)

Don't have a single clue as to how something so insignificant can make people so upset.

different things for different people. Hell it can be the principle of not wanting any content cut/ not buying a product inferior(SUBJECTIVE) to another location's/people dont like touching stuff/and etc. I dont purchase games with cut content (meaning less content than another location ) unless they go down in price, i didnt buy Devil survivor 2 record breaker which had cut content (even though that same licensed content is in another game owned by the same people) and i wont until it gets to the price DS1 is nowadays (aka $10 on sale) . But i know i can import this game and not have any issues since 3ds hacks kinda killed the region lock. and a patch was made for this game so i can actually read it in my language.

This is exactly the discussion I had with a friend today. Not only about this game in particular but the overall of evolution of Japanese RPG. I was a huge JRPG fans in the SNES/PSX/PS2/360 area and for the last few years I can probably count on my hands the number of JRPG I played. I love the Trails of series but Cold Steel had me really disappointed with all the perverted stuff. It also got in the way when I played Danganronpa 2. Some JRPG always had a certain level of perversion but it never bothered me until some studios went full throttle towards this path.

I severely dislike otaku stuff and it gets in my way from enjoying game so I'm buying much less JRPG than I used too. I feel like I'm not the target audience for these games anymore outside of the rare few games where that kind of content isn't prevalent.

I won't shed many tear over this removal either.
You act as if there was that many JRPGs this generation at all (that's not IF/CompaHeart). And the Danganronpa comparison is poor, it was always like that. That's not bleed in, THAT is a part of Danganronpa period.

If you didn't get it because they couldn't acquire the license for some DLC skins, I don't think you ever intended to buy the game prior to massively discounting in the first place. Even if you did import it now, you wouldn't get them anyway since they were given away at the game launch and never again.

DR2 definitely kicked it up a notch from DR1. AE goes even further than 2.

Hmm interesting. So if cut content means you will only buy the game at a decreased price, does that mean you actually have a dollar figure in mind for this specific content? How much is head patting worth to you?

I admitted in a separate post I was wrong about that. I've since read more arguments in favor of seeing it as gay conversion and I see where they're coming from whereas I hadn't before. I still don't think it was intentional and agree with Steve that it's just poorly written rather than making a statement about anything, but I'm not telling anyone they're wrong.

I'm glad you've come around as you were very condescending and dismissive earlier about it. As for the author's intentions, Soleil's story reflects the attitudes of the writer; gay women are expected to grow out of it (a VERY Japanese attitude), they're not really gay they just need to find the right man ("if it's you it's okay" trope in the S rank support), the weird homosexuality/incest parallel with her mum, being gay is eccentric and weird and something that needs to be corrected, predatory behaviour involving spiking a lesbian's drink as a way in to "cure" her is an okay means to an end etc. It was absolutely intentional. There's no epiphany where the characters realise this is fucked up and the main character begs for forgiveness and everyone accepts her for who she is and Soleil goes back to asking girls out for tea.

Gay women see this shit all the time in media, we can pick up on it very very well as these attitudes are also reflected in society. It's bread and butter lesbophobia as obvious as the "crazy bisexual villain" and "murdered trans sex worker" tropes for bi and trans people.

After that, I would only defend it on the basis of letting it see the light of day so it can be properly criticized.

It has seen the light of day, in Japanese. The harm has been done over there, no need to spread that poison over here too. Young gay girls in the west do not need to be exposed to it also just so that it can be debated about by English speakers on internet forums.

Danganronpa is an otaku game. It has appeal beyond the otaku market like Steins;Gate, but it's a tropey otaku game.

And you're right about JRPGs, but not because of changing trends but because they just don't get made as much anymore. All those great series from the 90s and early 00s are dead. Grandia, Wild Arms, Chrono, Suikoden, Lufia, Shining Force, etc. The only people that have since become a big player for the genre is Compile Heart. Gust has always been around with Atelier as has Atlus with SMT/Persona. Because there's just not as much being made, the pandery ones stand out more.

The solution to this is to wish for more to get made and series revivals in general.

Well, that's weird. There was hardly anything even remotely objectionable in the entire game save for, like, that one scene at the beginning where Rean falls on Alisa accidentally and him being uncomfortable for a bit while studying with Emma. Seriously, from the way people were bringing it up pre-release I thought it was going to be way worse than two or three small scenes in the duration of a 60-80 hour long game.

So this is what Fire Emblem has become huh?
Woah.

This was more or less my thought seeing it in the trailer. Complete with a facepalm and a very real consideration to be done with this series.

Cut content or otherwise, at least it looks like they are taking a step back in the right direction gameplay-wise. For the most part.

You probably shouldn't expect this (Skinship and everything associated) going forward. Internal pushback, Japan pushback, and now even NoA is pushing back. This stuff is as sunk as can possibly be and it returning would require some sort of miracle.

That's not true, Cold Steel had way more perverted stuff. Angelica kept commenting on being attracted to every girl in the game (there was a line about "fabulous fifteens" that was particularly disgusting) and Rean's sister was attracted to him. I love Cold Steel, but the complaints about perverted anime stuff are totally understandable.

So a girl being attracted to every other girl in the game is now perverted anime stuff?

Ahh, I've been busy so I haven't been able to keep up with this thread!

Anyway, a friend of mine came over last night with their Japanese copy of Fire Emblem If/Fates (coincidentally, it's the very same person who posted the videos that people are sharing in this thread) so that I could try it out for myself. I've watched them play it before, but I hadn't actually played it myself yet. It didn't really change my opinion of the feature much (but I already had a pretty good understanding of it prior, anyway), but my friend did mention some things that I hadn't even considered.

My friend has played through both Birthright and Conquest (and part of Revelation), and they've said that interestingly, they've gotten to know many characters entirely through this touching feature, and without it they'd know most of the characters far less. Why? Because while they may not pair up with or use all of their characters in battle, they can invite any character to their home and play this mode with them.

Every character has their own mannerisms and reactions based on their personality and relation to your avatar character—for example, your husband/wife is going to obviously be more intimate with you than other characters. You can use the feature with your children, and it becomes more of a motherly/fatherly type of thing. Other characters that you're not married to can still show affection, but it's not the same type of affection that's shown with your husband/wife. Characters can even show resistance and refuse to be touched. (And for those unaware, the touching is also limited to just the head and shoulders; it's not like you're touching all over their body.) It's a great way to form deeper connections with these characters and get to know them better, or at all if you're not even using them in battle.

I personally don't find anything "creepy" (a term that's misused and thrown around far too much) about it at all, though I understand that it's common for others to think that way about stuff like this, but I'm sure most of the people complaining about it haven't played it themselves or even watched more than a few seconds of it on YouTube, so they probably don't have an accurate understanding of what it is. Even so, it's an entirely optional feature that both affects gameplay (giving you stat bonuses with characters outside of battle) and enjoyment (getting to know your characters better and, for some people, giving more options for connecting with same-sex characters), and to want it gone just because you don't like it is rather ignorant and mean-spirited, in my opinion.

Whether or not its removal will make the game "better" is entirely subjective. Ultimately, it's removing optional content that plenty of people were really looking forward to, and that's not a good thing in my book. It's not like it's just altering something slightly like many other localization/censorship changes, this is entirely scrapping a feature that can add a lot to the game for many people.
The mode sounds very interesting the way you described it. Both from a story and gameplay standpoint.

Sucks it's being cut. The game is worse for it being left out.

And I don't see how people can think it's creepy if they read what you wrote.

Because people tend to stick with their initial impressions?

I think GameXplain recently posted English footage of the game. Perhaps outlets are starting to receive review copies?

From what I understand, NoA recently hosted an event where people were flown into San Francisco to get a hands-on preview of several games, including Fire Emblem Fates.

Ayup, but alot of video game media is local, so teams like Game Explain sent a local guy instead of their fire emblem guy .... and the gameplay video shows that.

I think I have an unreasonable grudge against POR/RD for bringing yiffers into Fire Emblem. Can't stand the Awakening/Fates callbacks either.

In other words, Japanese whale hunting.

That's already a thing with products like DOAX, making multiple limited editions and splitting up content between them because they know the super dedicated will buy them all which in turn supports the company and the series by surviving off the whales.

When she makes it a huge deal and talks about "pressing her delicates" on other characters' "ironing boards" (exact quote)... yes. The way you phrased it makes it sound like it's simple attraction when it's played up to levels much higher than that.

Trails is an early 2000s series in that style still alive to this day, I know you personally didn't like it but its better then most of those 90s/00s jrpg franchises you listed imo.

One thing I want to note here is that advocating care for the global market does not in and of itself mean that you have to tailor it for said market. I understand that some people might adore the direction Fire Emblem is going and may want NoJ to do whatever they want to do and not worry at all about other markets when designing their game. But I don't think foresight would have completely ruined the game if they had considered the implications of skinship getting cut for the American release. Mind you, I'm not ultimately saying they should or should not have included it, but I think it's kind of odd to sort of argue a complete isolationist path lest everything become some Western-focused dudebro game that will fail in both markets. Nixing skinship from the Japanese version during development because it wouldn't work in the West doesn't automatically transform this into a game that's losing its sense of itself.

This is true too. Focusing on the west doesn't mean making a dudebro shooter or reducing the content to corridors or whatever. The games can still be weird, and still have that eastern flavor, but foresight is required in the global market to be more welcoming. Pokemon is a very Japanese game and series, and became a global phenomenon and rather than fading away, they worked in retaining global success while still staying true to all the weird things and lore that's part of Pokemon. It meant nixing a few things like the slot machines but overall, Pokemon is still very much the same as previous games, just becoming more welcoming to a more global audience.

Pokemon is for kids too so it may not be an exact comparison but they have done a lot to maintain global success.

A lot of stuff in cold steel is weird, specifically because of the ages of the characters. So what would normally be worthy of an eye roll is now just creepy. Particularly anything to do with miriam.

Don't get me wrong, I think the feature is weird and plays up how Japanese some of Nintendo's games can be. They need international appeal now, but they're doing it all ass backwards.

BUT, this particular instance looks harmless to me. There's no reason it can't be sold to people who are willing to pay for it.

This could be a good reason to sell uncut versions on the eShop. Let parents use the 3DS/Wii U parental controls the way they're supposed to be used.

Dixie Kong
Kiddy Kong
Cranky Kong
Funky Kong
Candy Kong
Wrinkly Kong
Swanky Kong
Tiny Kong
Lanky Kong
Chunky Kong

...wow, that actually adds up to 10, lol

Thought I'd have to make up extra Kongs like Titty Kong and John McCainy Kong

I personally am more annoyed at a show like Fairy Tail having occasional fanservice in the form of battle damage clothing, than I am something like Ikkitousen, which is firmly aimed at that type of content. The bleed in is what bothers some.

Or you could be watching something good instead of Fairy Tale!!!

It's shitty content and the game is better without it.

If they introduced an optional doll petting mini-game in Bloodborne I sure as shit would want the localized version to remove that, too.

Not really the same thing.

If you want to make a comparison, it's more like "I don't like the Old Hunter and thus I want it to be removed." Or "I dislike Whirligig Saw and I want it removed" or "I really hate Chalice and I want it to be removed" and then rejoicing when From Software released a patch that erased those things just because I don't like it.

I'd be overjoyed if they removed chalices from Bloodborne via a patch. I could actually get the platinum if that happened.

Nah, it's a good comparison. Fire Emblem never had face rubbing before and it'll likely never have it again in the future. This is not some integral, core element to Fire Emblem, it's a silly minigame that wasn't very well received.

It's not that hard, just kinda tedious, hahaha.

I am seeing it more from a "removing content that other people may enjoy just because I hate it" perspective, which I just cannot personally affirm to. And you're right, it's just a silly minigame, which in my honest opinion not worth having a furor about, especially since they too have improved other gameplay elements--which nobody now talks about because they're too busy getting angry at a content that they can just skip entirely should they wish.

You also get the perverted grandfather, the student council president in some half naked costume on stage that seems roughly 10 years old on that CG, you proofread some yaoi novel with Emma, Emma's breast could basically pass of as a plotpoint, half of Angelica's dialogue is how she relishes smelling women up close and how she enjoys deflowering young maidens or whatever. And this is on top of what some random NPCs and stuff I already forgot. It didn't turn me off from the game but frankly I really don't like it. There,s barely any of this in the Sky games.

Duuuuuuuuudeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee..... I don't want to even begin to imagine the pain. Bloodborne's platinum is a sunny beach compared to the nightmarish thunderstorm that is FFX :(

I've never found the thunder plains thing difficult or all that time consuming since you can manually trigger the lightning strikes.

I wasn;t so much doing it for the platinum, I was doing it so I would be ready to fight Nemisis since that boss was not in the NA PS2 version of the game. At that point I already had 3 characters maxed out so I figured I might as well go all the way.

I don't think so, unless you're referring to the Tonberry trick for grinding sphere levels?
