Gears of War: Ultimate Edition for Win 10 |OT| Down But Not Out

I just checked for Windows updates again and saw I had preview build available as I am part of the insiders program. I downloaded it, let it update Windows and now Gears is downloading (essentially reinstalling Windows to a new version). It is ridiculous this had to be done to get this game to install when I was already on version 1511.

Something I don't understand is it's advertised as the first AAA DirectX 12 game... but it runs as a DirectX 11 process using DX 11 API, it appears.

Back to the NAT topic; does anyone have this game running with an open NAT?

I just tried with DMZ, and I still only had a moderate NAT.

I am trying to get to the bottom of this, so people can actually connect in lobbies!

Well I mean, it's not intended that you have to download updates first before you can use the store, but the fact that you're opted into getting preview builds and you've been complaining about it not working the entire time....

Did you just opt-in to getting preview builds today as a result of these problems? Or were you already opted-in to getting them?

Also zero chance in hell of modding :(
From user Fod Regerson on the Gears boards:

Yep, absolutely no chance.

The game is cooked in a variation of Unreal Engine's "CookedPCConsole" format, which means all editor-related content is stripped out during cooking.

That's a bit of a bummer, really. Especially after all of the awesome custom content the original PC release spawned!

Also lol at copy/pasting from Gears 3's ini files

Gears: Ultimate was built directly on top of the Gears PC 2007 codebase. This is just a sad case of having to be severely limited for the Windows store. Cooking in a seek-free console format was all they could do.

That being said, this game would take a hell of a lot to run regardless, even in a normal CookedPC state. The seekfree file caches are HUGE! By huge, I mean to the point where they had to split it into several caches. I've never seen that done on an Unreal Engine game before.

I guess this is a case of pushing Unreal Engine 3 to the absolute limit, beyond what was intended. Who knows.

In terms of UnrealScript, they would have built upon the original code. Ini files have some instances where they directly copy/pasted from the GOW3 on minor things like the UI DataProviders.

The code hierarchy still follows that of Gears 1

How does it not sound ridiculous? I was already on the correct version of Windows per the requirements and could purchase other content from the store. If it was on Steam it would have been done downloading by now without any extra work from me.

I opted in to get them today.

So...I just got done downloading and cannot find ANY multiplayer games. It just searches for infinity. Anyone else have this issue?

For info: a quick play with Nvidia suggests using the WindowsApps\ .exe file doesn't work.

There is a Gears of War UE profile in 362.00 drivers by default.

can someone confirm or deny split screen coop please.

I don't see anything about split screen anywhere in the multiplayer settings. XBLA or local network options only.

So I have to force AF through the Nvidia control panel or can't I do that with the shit Windows store limitations?

You can. You can also force it for the game's profile only.

How did you check this?

You can change where to install. Search app settings, go to storage, and choose where new apps are saved. I had to change it already and it installed fine. Too bad I can't find any multiplayer games though :/

One thing at a time, I guess.

For a company that are notorious for awful PC support I'm absolutely shocked at the amount of people who have jumped in, bought the game and are complaining about the lack of features.

Now, not to say it's your guys fault, MS has to do better, but there are times when you should know better and this is one of them.

No local co op is sad. It is my favorite way to play Gears 1. I have 5 different controllers that work on my pc so there is nothing stopping me from doing local co-op except for devs not supporting it.

If this requires another windows update I won't be getting it, the November update fucked my PC by reinstalling a bunch of old software I had deleted months prior and took it upon itself to install drivers which were giving me constant bluescreens which took me months to fix in the first place after constant driver verifier checks.

It shouldn't require another update if you have the November update (that's the big one, 1511, I think)

Reminds me of how the original Gears was one of the first DX10 games, but it was really a DX9 game and used DX10 just for MSAA or something.

If its anything like xbone split screen then trust me you don't. They really did a piss poor job of it. Viewing screen is cut off.

My best friend and I were pretty pissed at the results. The color scheme change didn't help either. Hard to see the difference between Locust and Cog from a ways off in split screen. Their blue and red uniform LEDs are gone or are so dull they cant be seen. But maybe it looks better on a huge ass TV or something.

is this region locked? i bought it but i just realized that i am in the USA store and i am in south america....FML. its downlading

Game looks real sweet.

Not gonna lie, that looks really good. Man, they gotta sort out these issues with the store and this release and I might double dip. However, got damn they have an uphill battle, and I hope they are willing to climb it the right way.

Game runs great except for the cutscenes but that's an known issue with G-Sync. I hope they fix it soon, so I don't have to press Win+G during every cutscene (doesn't stutter anymore when Game Bar is active).

Some screenshots from the beginning of the game:

I also like that you can upload screenshots directly to OneDrive.

This is not good. Any Radeon users care to chip in.

I'm not trying to jab or anything, I'm asking seriousely : Why do people buy AMD graphics cards (outside of the price) instead of Nvidia cards ?

For a company that are notorious for awful PC support I'm absolutely shocked at the amount of people who have jumped in, bought the game and are complaining about the lack of features.

For a company that bad at porting game to PC, GOW looks STUNNING and work fine. Unless you have an amd card, but that the thing you should know : AMD cards possessors have always huge problems with games, not just microsoft's ones.
