NPD Sales Results for February 2016 [Up1: Fire Emblem]

Hey Street Fighter, maybe have something for single players to do, next time.

That said I've been told by top internet persons that by ignoring the vocal minority and catering to hard core tournament type players instead, sales will have a much longer tail. So we will see.

So, without getting into actual numbers...

LTD, SW tie ratio: Xbox One > PS4

PS4 HW gap growth not yet translating to corresponding increase in SW sales split on non-exclusive titles.

Couple hypotheticals from that is that the Xbox One has more core, high purchase rate per install gamers than the more mass market PS4 that is selling more software overall. Not surprising really. Other is that SW metrics can trail HW, so we might see these SW measures begin leaning more towards PS4, but it's not happening yet.

GTA V sold nearly 351K copies in Feb 2016, 2016
HOW THE FUCK is that even possible?
I think GTA 5 is the biggest success the world must have ever seen.
I believe Mine Craft just responded that they have 99 problems but being GOAT of sales ain't one.

Can it not just be as simple as: PS4 gamers buy more digitally.

Probably not. If anything the less mainstream the device the more hardcore the audience. Tie ratio on Vita and Wii U is probably quite good, despite there being less games and not that many out there.

Star Wars player base was also higher than 50% of the PS4 player base for the period of time I tracked it (a month) despite it roughly being that install base.

Still about SFV sales...

SFV first NPD (PS4): ~205k
ROTR first NPD (XB1/360): ~200k

ROTR WW first two month (XB1/360): > 1m

I'm inclined to think SFV (PS4/PC) WW sales is something 0.5-0.7m for the first month and it will cross 1m before March ends.

I believe Capcom will reach 2m shipped as of Mar 31st.

Edit - Fixed ROTR numbers are for Nov + Dec.

OR the PS4 being 1.5m units ahead in the US, maybe they have the exact same base core of hardcore gamers or close, but also an additional "casual" audience that does not buy as many games?

Impossible to tell.

Tie ratio always seems to be a screwed number that is likely to favor consoles with smaller fanbases that passionately support it. While market leaders are more likely to have the more casual console purchases since it's more mainstream. But in the end I believe Ps4 has consistently been the one with the highest collective sales by console.

Were overall software sales down for the Xbox1 this month compared to last year? The fact that they only mention "exclusives" sales increase in the PR and not overall sales makes me wonder.

PS. I upped my minimum sales estimate from 700k to 800k.

Don't forget ROTR got a great December, and sold more than what did in first month, that's hardly gonna happen with Street Fighter V.

...I believe Capcom should ship close to that 2 million predicted.

I mean, another example, Mario Maker sold 1 million by end of September 2015, and Nintendo shipped 1.88 million.

If they REALLY wanna ship 2 million, they could even with very low sales. Of course, they will stop ships copies for a while...

Ohhhh it was for Nov/Dec... fixing.

From the data I've seen, this is not true.

Buying games on DD is not hardcore thing .
This is not years ago buying stuff on DD is the norm now which is why it growing so fast .

I bet a lot of it has to do with people double-dipping between the last-gen & current-gen versions when they upgrade their hardware. One of the rare occasions where the game really deserves a second look on current platforms as the shift from last to current gen is night and day between the two.

Rockstar was brilliant in releasing V during the sunset of last gen and then bringing it back, Bigger, Badder & More Badass for current gen.

yup that was the case with me, had it on ps3, when I heard it was coming to the ps4 with more extras I immediately stopped playing the ps3 version so I wouldn't ruin the experience. traded the ps3 one and got the ps4 version during black Friday.

so yea u can chalk that up as 2 sales for one person

Not sure if QB will help much since it also comes to PC. MS lost sale on me because of this. I was on the fence to buy XB1 for so long but the Win10 UWP makes it really hard to justify buying XB1 at this point.

Isn't it cross-buy though? Why wouldn't you get the xbox one version if you get the PC version for free (and presumably you have both systems)?

I guess this kind of justifies Sakurai's whole, (paraphrased) "If I make Smash for competitive players only the series will have no future" quote that had so many people upset.
In a way, it does... But he is not Ono. Ono holds the bag on this, and that is something that I have not been seeing.
Could Pokken outsell SFV?
No... That would be a little crazy if it did but I don't see that happening.

Perfect time to just casually walk in, and steal everyone's wallets. "Keep chasing those pixels, dorks!"

If the PS4 can maintain the ~20% increase YoY, do you all think it will decrease the odds of another price cut or revision? Or at least delay it more toward the holidays?

i think we've had at least ten years to get used to the 'some companies will go bust' part (which is very generous wording), but what companies have been filling the void?

Well, none, really. I think it's more a permanent consolidation.

But I don't think it's a trend that is continuing. Publisher and release counts have stabilized, as have revenues. Don't forget, US physical SW revenues were actually up slightly in 2015 vs 2014.

At least to my eyes, the data tells me we've gone through the pain, and now is the new norm.

did nintendo looked stupid when they bought bayo2?
the good thing is that game exists and its awesome, lets just hope that it has good support throughout its lifetime.

Except that Bayonetta IP was basically dead, so Nintendo bring back to life was really great for gamers, but honestly I think that was a mistake, did nothing for Wii U.

Capcom would launch SF V anyway, maybe later but would and I don't think was particullary good money spent by Sony.

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!
Since Bayonetta 2 was briefly mentioned (in a joke, but I don't care)...I'd be really glad to know this month's numbers, due to re-release. Also, Xenoblade Chronicles X LTD as of February.

Price cuts have started to happen much closer to the holidays than before.

If the PS4 continues this ~20% YoY performance, I don't see a price cut this year unless they want to push VR as much as possible.

Also I think a revision won't happen until 2017 at the earliest.

If these are Street Fighter V's sales...

... I truly doubt Capcom is going to EVER bother to make a new Rival Schools or Darkstalkers. They're going to learn all the wrong lessons. Again.

What's supposed to be the right lesson from this? Why would they even make those games if they were already hesitant on making SFV in the first place.

I doubt Capcom was ever going to make a new entry in any of those series even if SF5 was a major success (which it could be in some long run).

Capcom is really weird when it comes to fighting games since the HD era.

If it makes you feel any better, I actually like Sakura. People just dislike her for some reason.

Cause she a terrible character that does nothing?

But that another conversation for a different thread.

Did we ever get D:CS numbers?
