King of Fighters XIV Full Roster Leak (with character pics)

He died in the Fatal Fury timeline. In KOF he's just been chilling since those events never happened(or havent happen).
It's mostly because the KOF guys weren't told that Geese Howard was dead in the Fatal Fury universe so when he died die they were basically like "Uh should we change it to have him dead?" and the FF guys were like "No no keep him in!"

So yeah Geese Howard is alive. Even if he wasn't though, can just throw in Nightmare Geese.

For the spritework, I maybe see your point. For gameplay, I disagree. Even as AI, those two are way more challenging, because SNK boss syndrome.
Being hard to beat =/= being good designs/well animated/having cool moves/etc.
Making a fighting game boss hard to beat is easy. There is nothing remarkable about that at all.
This is pure curiosity on my part, and a little OT, but as an SNK fan who likes Yamazaki but is confused at why he's so clamored for, what's the draw to Yamazaki for you? The design, the gameplay?
His classy gangster design, his brutal move set and his utterly insane character.

Cool design.

He has a pimp coat.
2834789-yamazaki+trowing+the+coat+away.gif

He fights with 1 hand in his pocket most of the time, and the hand that's in his pocket is actually clutching a knife.
2834809-yamazaki+knife+01.gif

He has lightning fast "snake arm" punches.
2834814-yamazaki+snake+arm+01.gif

Also, he's kinda crazy.
2834813-yamazaki+laughing.gif

Pretty much all of his moves look extremely brutal and vicious. He kicks sand and people, stomps on them, shanks them, headbutts them (causing a goddamn explosion) and even throws opponents using his teeth!"
In the story he is also revealed to be one of the Hakkesshu but unlike the most of the others he is not afflicted by riot of the blood nor does he have any interest in much of anything related to Orochi.

Basically he makes Iori look like an angsty teen with silly scratch moves.

You gotta be a real dirtbag to beat a man in front of his wife and kids.

Kim is a wreck of a human being whose primary abilities are beating people up and showing off whether people want to deal with him or not, and he probably made them watch - eventually that's gonna backfire once in a while.

Man, it's gonna be a riot to see him getting humbled by his master.

And speaking of the master, I wonder if he's gonna get on Athena's case for being a distraction in Jhun's life (the guy got a broken leg that made him skip a KoF because he mistook an Athena poster for the real deal...).

Didn't 98 Ultimate and 2002 Unlimited Match have both Geese and the dead "nightmare Geese" variation of the character?

Hell, thinking about this stuff just makes me want CvS3 instead. Capcom has done the best Geese AND Rugal by far anyway.

Each of the UMs has a couple of takes on Geese, which at least move-wise cover a lot of ground.

As for Rugal, my favosite is still the original all-out butcher version from 94:

rugal-kof94-bust.gif

The fact he kept his jacket in CvS means the whole thing was beneath him.

Like? Sure, but removing all the roster from older entries... Meh..

It'd only really count as removing if recycling assets were an option, which for a 2D-to-3D transition doesn't really apply...

Hype for Geese, but how come he can survive when Rugal can't? Weak.

In the KoF story Geese takes the cautious approach and usually sends others to investigate stuff for him, while Rugal is a bit too hands-on and stuff ultimately tends to blow in his face.

This was part of a leak that emerged last month (which can be found in the other topic), where some of the other details went as follows:

So, whatever is going on here will likely circle up with Kensou and Ron, too. Considering the Dragon Power and Flying Brigands arcs were things that were largely snuck into the NESTs storyline without some portions of the team communicating with each other, it's nice that it may get to FINALLY get to take center stage.

This is the correct answer.

Huh, I thought I was up to date with the leaks but somehow I missed that.

And it probably will depend a lot on just what they plan to do with this new boss. SNK(P) has a nasty of killing off cool bosses, instead of letting them actually "get away to fight another day". If this guy is as powerful as he's being made out to be, I'd actually prefer if he did, so that we could get even more multiverse shenanigans out of him over the course of this new arc.

Well we could always hope for another Mukai situation!...Hopefully not ending with the boss getting one shot by the final boss of the saga too.

I know it wasn't asked of me but I can try to field the question. Yakuza gang guys like Yamazaki alone are pretty good designs but he has an added draw. It's the fact that Yamazaki is a cfrazy person with a knife and powers. Then you add that these are Hakkeshu powers that drive Leona and Iori into the blood riot and not Yamazaki because he's already just that crazy. That shit is amazing and is why I like him.

Technically as a Hakkeshu he should be in the game since the other (except Goenitz, Shermie and co.) have been represented in the last game and this one, but instead he seems to be the only one absent.

His classy gangster design, his brutal move set and his utterly insane character.

Pretty much all of his moves look extremely brutal and vicious. He kicks sand and people, stomps on them, shanks them, headbutts them (causing a goddamn explosion) and even throws opponents using his teeth!"

Thanks for giving your explanation on Yamazaki. I like a lot of those elements about him too, but he never struck me as a necessary part of the roster, even with such personality to him. For a lot of his qualities Hakkesshu or not, Iori's been satisfying enough for me. And for more crazy personalities with cool styles, I'd rather see Oswald. Hypothetically, if there was a ever an insane/stylistic badguy team, I'd hope we'd see Yamazaki, Oswald, and Gato.

Being hard to beat =/= being good designs/well animated/having cool moves/etc.

Agreed with the first sentence. I just happen to like his KOF sprite work more.

I want to argue how remarkabl(y cheap) they were when I beat them in SNK games compared to other fighters, but that's just my take on it.

Man that coat and general Spanish nobility look is so godlike.

Mesh shirts will never look good on anyone who isn't a ninja.

Gato is cool with me. I generally like characters who look like they can fight and are animated well/are given cool (martial arts) moves that look like they hurt. Gato is a great representation of 'hard' Chinese martial arts in 2D fighting games (the Cammy-like jumping on people's shoulders and twisting their head looks kind of odd for such a big dude though) and Yamazaki is my favourite representation of pure unadulterated street fighting/violence.

Fighting with playing cards is not the most original concept but they pulled it off pretty well with Oswald. Not my favourite character but not bad either.

I doubt many people would complain if they made another Garou.

Am i the only one having some doubts about this image?

1)First of all in the game portraits are 3d and not 2d...
l_5669034321ed5_thumb.jpg

2)...so what is the source of those portraits?

3)if he/she had all the portraits then why the alice's one is clearly ripped from a 3d image?

We'll likely know if the leak is true when Vice, Mature, Kensou or Roman are shown. If their attire match what they have here then the leak image is likely true at this point.

Is this game still a a 3v3 setup like KOF13?

Every mainline KOF game had a 3 on 3 setup dating back to 1994.

The only games exception to this were side games like Maximum Impact.

It wouldn't be a proper KOF without the 3 on 3, so you won't have any issues here in KOF XIV.

It's one thing to fake returning characters but the new ones and bosses? And most of those are very clearly drawn by Ogura.

Would be very surprising if the characters in that image aren't legit.

The NESTS series games (99 to 2001) had teams of 4 with at least one character working solely as an assist. The way that worked changed between each of those games and the concept was ultimately dropped (although the tag team experiments for 2003 and XI were at least interesting).

It's placeholder art for this presentation type thing, it's not actually the character select screen. You may notice the giant Chinese text on top.

1) Why they don't use the 2d images (since they look better than the renders) boggles my mind, but I'd say this was definitely used for internal presentation purposes only. Seems legit.

2) probably someone snapping a shot from an internal meeting.

3) internal presentation purposes only.

Now that I think about it, what could those large boxes on the bottom row be for? I imagine two of them will be for the two bosses, but what about the other two?

Random Select and Previously Selected Team?
or
Randomly Selected Individual Character and Randomly Selected Remaining Team Members?

Ok but what's the point of making 2d portraits for everyone except for alice? It doesn't seem really professional.

The gallery will probably be very beefy.

Iirc they mentioned wanting to include a lot of art from their various artists as well as a lot of internal art that they have amassed over the years.

Really hope that holds true. I can't remember which game it was - might have been Mi2? - but one of the games had an art gallery I sat in for hours at one point.

Love almost all of the art for this series.

The "character portraits" are just concept art of the new designs cropped. Alice didn't get a redesign so they just placed the 3D render.

This isn't publically shown stuff (yet). It was just to pitch the ideas to the higher-ups, basically. Like JohnGrimm said, the art for people like Athena and "Electric Pop Idol Girl" were done by a new artist, who they were probably trying to get to grips with their design process and ideas. The rest was probably done by Ogura, and he's obviously more comfortable with drawing the characters, being a long time SNK artist.

Alice's design isn't changing from the Pachislot, and they're headed towards 3D portraits anyway for the game. So if anything, she's a target for what they want after all is said and done, art was a quicker way to achieve concepts than hashing out 49 more models from scratch.

I think it was mentioned either on the SRK interview or Facebook, but they mention this game will have an extensive art gallery that covers the series history.

KoF XI and XIII both had very nice galleries, and 2K3, as much as I dislike it, also had a nice one. One thing I loved about them is that they let you zoom in WAY more than even most online sites at the time, so you could really, REALLY see the strokes and line work of the art in fine detail. Absolutely gorgeous stuff.

Everyone is getting a little or big redesign, i don't see why alice should be the only exception.

Because she's still a relatively new character who has never appeared in a fighting game, let alone a King of Fighters. Plus, I wouldn't bet she would be the only one to not receive a redesign, as from the looks of the character art Yuri, Ryo, and Mai all look unchanged from their norm

Remember again, this was an internal doc we're seeing due to a leak. I'm sure she'll have a new render for the character select screen, based of her game model. And they may change some things in order to fit the style and animation that this game has evolved to.

But since she's a design that is probably representing the Pachislot specifically, and this was updated as recently as 2014, she's probably getting the least touchups. Geese, Terry, and Mai have new designs from that Pachislot too, but don't seem to be using them for this game, going by the art. Maybe they'll get them as DLC or earnable bonuses?

I'm quite interested in seeing if Alice can find a place besides Mary as "blonde girls in USA colors, with stars, who think Terry is awesome".

I'm thinking in the way SNK are presenting the characters. It is unlikely that they are going to show new characters anytime soon. So the sooner one of the characters I mentioned are shown, the quicker more people can accept the leak image as fact.

Also, Ogura must have improve alot. His Angel and Ramon art look great.

Hyped for the South American team, hopefully we'll see gameplay of the new characters before long. I'm still happy I finally got geese back but I'm used to not getting the characters I like for the majority of games.

That's the case for me as well. A game could have the best mechanics known to man but if it doesn't have any characters I like I'm not going to play it. I play fighting games for the characters above all else.
Not to mention that Yamazaki has some really interesting story implications.

Well yeah characters mean a lot, but just like you found yamazaki you can like other characters as well.

Because that Alice design is the new design.

I'm not excluding that the image could be right though.

So, how are they going to rationalize having Nakoruru in the game if SamSho is in a different time period?

And I can't name the third girl on the women's team. King and Mai are easy to point out, but the third... coming up with nothing here.

According to the rumor, the final boss can access alternate worlds and timelines, and that's why Nakoruru's team in in the game (presumably to be able return home, I guess).

The "new" girl, Alice, was only ever available in Japan-only stuff like mobile games (at least one of the Days of Memories dating sims and a card game) and pachinko.

I thought that was the point?

We already had that in Terry's Midnight Bliss in SvC Chaos.

Which reminds me... good heavens, if the rumor is true the final boss can make Goeniko canon... (I think she got a nod in a KoF pachinko though?...)
