[Destructoid] Leaked photo of NX controller?

Definitely interested, haptic buttons sound cool if it's like that technology where it literally feels like a button and the screen can display materials such as Velcro or sandpaper, and it actually feels like it.

This isn't anything that would be my first choice, either, but my goodness the reactions here. No buttons does not equal instant failure.

That controller is so Nintendo.
It really, really isn't. When have they ever made a console/device without a d-pad for example?

I would bet on this being a fake created by someone with the mindset "lol nintendo so crazy, always the strange controllers!". In fact Nintendo's controller's have always made a lot of sense. The Wiimote got a lot of hate early on but when they first showed it, my reaction was "of course. that makes sense.". This controller would need a lot of explaining before it could start to make sense.

If this is real, how much does that controller cost? And then to bundle a modern console with it? Unless the console is in the controller which would be quite the feat.. Still I don't get it and then how do you project the game screen to the tv without stretching the image considerably.

There's no way anyone in the world is releasing a modern controller without grips. That and the other 30 reasons this is stupid and fake.
The last time I heard "haptic feedback" was from before the Wii U released.
Haptic is legit...but no where near primetime especially in that form factor.

If they do this then I see it as a step down from the gamepad, which I actually loved. At least it was a normal controller with the screen in the middle.

Since when do the actual devices look EXACTLY like crappy patent diagrams?

I don't know, man.

Looks relatively representative to the final product to me. If this is really the NX controller, it'd be hard for the patent to be that much simpler than the final product, given how simple the controller is, design wise.

Ask me about the moon landing or the temperature at which jet fuel burns. You may be surprised at what you learn.
I have no idea what the hell this thing is!

considering the reaction over the last 5 or so years by core/enthusiast gamers to mobile/touch screen games, this shouldn't be a surprise. If this thing is real, what it makes perfectly clear is that Nintendo is going the unconventional route again, which has been boom or bust for them (boom with the wii, bust with the Wii U) but hasn't exactly garnered a ton of support or loyalty with hardcore gamers in either case.

The fact that this looks like something nobody would actually create and a looks like a fake troll concept is the same reason why I think it could be entirely possible from Nintendo and has an air of legitimacy about it. Lmao.

I don't know what to think. THESE DAMN PROTOTYPES. I also remember thinking that the DS4 was ugly as fuck, but that was just the prototype.

Where is the thread for that patent again? I want to know what it can do if real.

If that is honestly the direction Nintendo is taking their brand, I am not joining in... that thing looks like an abomination.

It looks like a fake one to me. Besides, since when has Nintendo ever had a patent leak that resulted in a near accurate description/image of its controller design ?

Ok detective NeoGAF,

We need to scour Unreal Engine 4 tech demos and see if we can find the matching background.

We have already noticed virtual a and b buttons, along with virtual arrow keys around the far right stick.

We have 62.22 at the top of the controller that's thought to be a framerate counter or I'm thinking a "build" counter for the demo or controller.

The bright white light is almost certainly a flash back from the camera.

We have 5 things that look built into the controller at the bottom of it. Horizontal slots most likely speakers, the pinhole for mic, the circle a camera, the square black area possibly an infared or 3D camera or black duct tape covering something they don't want shown?

Dude, there's a difference between that and this.

The Wii U gamepad is clearly based on an engineering drawing and is a patent for the device as a whole, whilst this shit is something someone cobbled together in 2 seconds to demonstrate a single concept. They're not exactly compatible.

It looks like the patent concept.

It's very interesting; looking at the patent and the actual device, it's clear there's only a small area where your fingers cover the screen, enough to be minimal.

The original orientation looks better in my eyes, gives a better idea of the width imo. The more I look at this thing the more I like and am intrigued by it.

Does anyone even manufacture round LCD screens? They've got to source them from somewhere and if Nintendo is the only one buying them, they must be expensive. You'd think they'd learn from the gamepad.

that Wii U controller design patent were after Nintendo's unveiling of the Wii U, not before. The Wii remote design patent was also after the unveiling of the Wii. Same for a bunch of their design patents.

Like I kept saying before, this is following way to close to a non-design patent that only described specific functions about a free form display and not the actual look of the controller.

I think my biggest disappointment here would actually be the removal of the side holders from the patent. That makes zero sense.
