[Destructoid] Leaked photo of NX controller?

Assuming this isn't fake -- Wouldn't the design of this work perfectly with a Virtual Reality headset?

Basically they have something that can connect to a TV, go mobile, and also work in VR?

Comparing orange with apples here. Phone soesnt require precise output. Thats why planes still use physical commandes and not giant touchscreens :p

I know. 😝

That's nice, but clearly as time goes on there seems to be less and less of you. And that's a problem for Nintendo, which in turn could be a problem for you and the kinds of games you enjoy. You can't just live in this bubble where sales don't matter and you're just gonna be able to keep plucking Nintendo games off a Nintendo tree forever.

Of course sales matter. I never said otherwise. We were talking about individual consumer decisions here and my answer to the question: "why should I buy this" was "because the games are fun". I wasn't trying to say anything about Nintendo's place in the market or something.

Yup I'm pissed the phone industry hasn't gotten this message. I'm so pissed phones these days are not bulky and have less buttons. They should stop removing stuff for convenience.

I'm loving the sudden change of heart about touchscreen only. :3

At least I have a leg up on the competition, since I've been playing games, and emulators on my phone. :)

Remember Nintendo ON ?
Honestly, I don't. D=

Maybe, even though it's cropped, it could be an interactive demo?

The ones on mobile platforms let you use the sticks to look around, so it COULD be something going on here - if it's real, of course.

Isn't this the same tech demo?

Shows that you can interact with it, and move the camera around, which would lead to it being more real and explain why it only shows a portion of it.

This doesn't bode well for #TeamFake.

Like this...

That.... actually looks cool.

You were 100% in on those two concepts but this somehow is the breaking point?

If this is the real deal (or at least the real concept) it is, at the very least, interesting. That's enough to get me taking a serious look. Who the hell knows if the thing will deliver, but it's going to be a fun ride.

Yes. This is the absolutely the breaking point because it doesn't have buttons or a d-pad. They are throwing away all of the progress they've made in evolving controllers.

If it is real, it is more of an evolution of the Wii U tablet controller.

The problem with the Wii U tablet is that it is big, bulky and has a huge border around the screen. So putting the tablet controller up to your TV screen blocks your view. This new controller fixes those issues.

Those problems you are describing are not at all why the Wii U flopped so hard. Creating an "evolution" of a product that the market so quickly and decisively rejected seems pretty damn foolish.

Here's a visual demonstration of how I see it all working. Basically the buttons labeled "A" and "B" are not physical, the screen uses haptic feedback to make virtual buttons feel like physical ones so each game can have its own setup. As you can see in the image Super Mario 3D World is limited to just run and jump as those are the only inputs the game uses, other games might have 4 virtual buttons or 6 or 12. Whether a Dpad will be in the final product is interesting, perhaps the exchangeable buttons patent we saw? We could even switch the analog sticks for circle pads to benefit portability.

Why is everyone thinking about that when it seems obvious, if such a tech was used, it would be more for something like that.

NXdemo.jpg

And the portable would have a smaller version of it to replace the bottom screen of the 3ds.

Oh my god. You really believe what you wrote ?
Removing input on a controller is more convenience ? The thing looks bulkier and inconvenient now come on.

Why are you assuming they're removing inputs? Maybe they found a way to INNOVATE by perfectly replicate all of that on a touchscreen.

That's as plausible an idea as any.

At this point, we're all just "making believe" and spinning our wheels for the hell of it.

Sure, but haptic feedback just seems like a bigger jump to me. Not sure why people think Nintendo would ditch physical face buttons altogether.

If someone was actually moving the camera around it wouldn't line up exactly with the video.

That's true. But these tech demos have some default flyarounds which could still have been used here. We have a fps counter or version number on the top though.

If it's a handheld rather than a console's controller, we don't even have to worry about this as an issue.

Here is a guy who worked on the cave part of the tech demo that is shown on the controller:

Maybe someone has time to get in touch and he can shed some light on the picture? :)

Edit: Based on the video, it's actually a tech demo that you would chose to port to a device like the controller, thanks to the dual stick + touchscreen functionality shown off.

Sure if you fancy having those analog sticks in your eyes :p
Seriously though, nah,

Also, what downgrade are people seeing exactly in such a tiny and shitty quality pic ?

The pic just lines up WAY too well with the screenshot even for the interactive demo. There would still probably be small things off dealing with lighting/angling of things in the enviroment. This is literally 1:1 with the screenshot.

Seeing news agencys not following this makes me think it's real but they are nda'd. They sure as hell report on flimsier leaks. You can't tell me kotaku wouldn't have something up about this by now.

Because it's obvious when you see the button placement how limited it is. Where's the damn dpad ? Where's the place to put it ?

We don't know what the resolution would be, but using a wider field of view might make details too small.

That's nonsense, that fov is simply too small for it's own good. Fine details don't account for much when you can barely see anything in the frame. Also there's no reason for the horizontal fov to be smaller than the default 16:9 frame. Not to mention it's freaking off-centre but still perspective correct with the corresponding screen grab, which is impossible unless it was cropped from a larger image. Shifting the camera's position would change the perspective (also if you were going to mess around with the camera, it wouldn't be that hard to also fix the fov while you were at it).

Random... but Nintendo is working with Sharp on displays that conform to custom shapes so a haptic feedback touch screen in the shape of a controller isn't out of question.

This just seems either fake or a prototype to get games working with the general idea of the NX.

...

I am convinced that if Nintendo decides that the controller will be able to be taken on the go. There's a good chance that Nintendo's system will be a digital only closed ecosystem like Apple and their iOS products.

It seems to be about a 50/50 split of believers and naysayers, but the most damning strikes against it are:

1) The screen is displaying a still from a public UE4 demo video.
2) It lacks Nintendo's trademark ergonomics.
3) It's a near 1:1 copy of a patent design, and patent designs usually use extremely basic, broad
images to convey information as simply as possible.
3) The photo has been up on many news sites for over half a day now and Nintendo has done nothing about it.

I think it's safe to say it's fake.

1. Why does this mean it's fake exactly?
2. Nonsense. Nintendo gave us the DS and all handhelds that came after it. Garbage ergonomics.
3. This is the one actual point you have. It's indeed really similar.
4. What do you think Nintendo can do, ever heard of the Barbara Streisand effect? Come on now.

1. Take patent designs
2. Create in modelling program
3. 3D print for dirt cheap using Shapeways
4. Photoshop UE4 demo on it

It really isn't too difficult to fake

3d printed casing would explain why the sticks look so fake. They don't look like they can even move, or like there's some sort of rubber nipple over them, or as if the entire thing is one solid piece.

Interative demos can come with a rolling showcase

Whether this is is fake or not, I hope Nintendo's next handheld does include all buttons. I will never get used to clumsy touch controls.

About the tech demo. It's interesting that the picture used is an exact replica of one found in a youtube video and doesn't show anything new to the left or right and it's off centered. Also being able to match up a picture perfectly with an off screen picture at an angle of the controller/handheld doesn't sound right

Ya know, I'm team real just because I want to see the shit storms of it. I just hope it's the actual handheld and can be used as a controller for the more traditional console. Modified Snapdragon 800 series would be huge too. Would stomp on the Vita if it was the case and some where saying it would be less powerful than it lol.

Is it possible, assuming real of course, that the controller's grips are removable - and if so, could it be held vertically to function similarly to a remote or something?

As far as screen spacing and analog sticks getting in the way... I wouldn't discount the thought that the console is still going to plug into the TV, after all. Most of the action should be taking place on your TV, not the controller, but the controller's screen is what allows for custom button mappings and allocation.

Finally, if the virtual buttons use advanced haptic feedback or braille tech, this actually may not be so bad:

https://youtu.be/bZq3bCGlrjA
https://youtu.be/0fIg4rI4cDw

Now, considering the fact that would probably has a gyroscope on top of that, this is looking to be one expensive controller, and I'm not a fan of that prospect. It looks like a nice piece of tech, but is it worth the risk? Not right now, it isn't.

Plot twist:

It's an interactive demo automatically progressing. It is only zoomed in since the screen res is piss poor yet again so zooming it out fully would make it look garbage, therefore allowing you to look around to compensate.

THERE WE GO, PROVEN.
