Firewatch |OT| With Me

Just started playing after waiting for the patch (PS4). And yeah, having played many hours of The Witness lately, this game feels very rough from a technical point of view. Also, if i had known the dialogue was timed, i wouldn't have bought it. Timed dialogue is such a shitty mechanic. Apparently, Telltale introduced it as a "hot new mechanic" in their games and i hate to see it being copied and used elsewhere. It adds nothing to a game. Why not let the gamer decide at what pace he/she wants to play? I don't get why such things even exist in games.

Played through this today & wow what a game, I had various emotions whilst playing,
however my current depressive state may have heightened the game or it could help me gain an perspective on current state
I do feel that the game could have more to do in it to extend it's lifespan, I played through in about five hours, is it worth the £15 yeah just about due to the emotional aspect of the game, because I doubt I will ever forget playing it or play a game with the same emotions.

Playing on PS4 with the update, the game did judder a few times, it never crashed & it played fine for me other than the for-mentioned juddering for a second or so about four or five times, it only seemed to do this when there was either a lot of haze or smoke.

My only disappointment STORY SPOILER >>>
Is not being able to meet up with Delilah, I raced as fast as I could to get to her tower, but alas it was not meant to be, however I suppose Henry did meet up with Delilah when the helicopter landed at wherever it landed for the de-briefing discussed in the final radio conversation, many people are saying that the ending is disappointing with Ned & Brian, I was expecting it to be something out of the X-Files of LOST, but I thought it was fine, what disappointed me was Henry & Delilah just left hanging, not suggesting Henry leave Julia, but her living with her parents in Australia & her condition worsening Henry & Delilah could have made a life together.
the game-play, graphics & everything else is great imo.

Awesome to hear the game did well
Campo Santo – ‏@camposanto

Firewatch has out-sold our wildest expectations. Campo Santo is going to be around for a while and we can't wait to make whatever is next.

I think regarding endgame Delilah,
imagine how much atmosphere would immediately be ruined if you saw a big greasy awkward 3D model of a human being out of nowhere that supplants the mental image you had been building up the whole time? The game does a MASTERFUL job of having other characters in silhouettes or irregular states to keep you immersed. It would be way too risky and thematically inconsistent to have 3D Delilah sitting there to say goodbye in person and then sit on an awkward helicopter ride with you.

They could have done the meeting after fading to black for example, just hearing the voices.

Like two weeks later I still find myself thinking about this world. Good job guys.

Me too! I am working on replays because I just enjoyed the game so much and I am trying to see all the different dialogue options. I also plan on getting my photos developed. :)

Anyone else just consistant vague feeling of terror while playing this? I get this feeling with most fps games, and this one did it. Just waiting for doom, gets exacerbated by wearing headphones.

Every time I repelled or climbed a rope I kept waiting for someone to cut the line. Or when I was climbing the rocks, for a fist to come out of nowhere and hit me in the face as I pulled myself up. All the shady shit going on got me, how you say, paranoid.

Yup! Or when I got all the way to the bottom and turn around to somebody standing there.

WTF just finished this game are there multiple endings or something? Because mine was terrible. I was left with the feeling wtf that was it??

There has got to be something I missed right?

Maybe my expectations were too high, but the storytelling and dialog felt lacking. Too many jokey one-liners and too much avoidance of substantial topics to believe a real bond existed between Henry and Delilah. Delilah wasn't appealing or trustworthy, at least to me. The story held me in tension for most of the game but then just sort of dribbled out at the end.

I did enjoy the virtual hiking through a national park, though, and the sense of mystery the game sustains. I don't think they pulled it off, in terms of characters and storytelling, though. I have respect for the devs, so I'm looking forward to what they'll do next.

I finished it yesterday and had the same reaction. What a let down. I didn't expect it to be this great, sci fi reveal. But it ended so abruptly and with such a whimper. It's like the writers called the ending in.

I 1000% agree with this. Nailed it.

I loved the ending. Along with Rapture it's a very human ending, and exactly what I'd expect from a nicely written short story.

The dialogue between Henry & Delilah is delightful, and visually the game is stunning, especially the sunsets & the smoke effects later in the game.

Far from being a disappointment, once
you find Brian's body in the cave the story becomes far more grounded and I'm glad CS kept it low-key rather than going for a Big Bang ending, although I guess that's what the kids want these days, hence the complaints about it
.

Great game, very much looking forward to Campo Santo's next effort.

Has the game been fixed yet? I ordered it from PSN while I was out, and came home to see GAF explode about how terrible the PS4 version is, so I just let it sit for the updates to roll out. I saw it get updated once a week or two ago, but I don't know if that's THE game fixing patch.

I just want to be able to start the game as problem free as possible.

Question for anyone who has finished the game, I am just curious:
When did you first suspect Brian was dead? For me it was the second time in the cave (when you get locked in), I looked down and saw a shoe on a rock. I knew exactly at that moment. It was still heartbreaking and horrible when I found him. I felt ill.

When I heard Delilah say she didn't know what happened to them

My wife played it to completion last week and it's much better than how it was at launch when I played it. There's some stuttering in saves spots but it seems as "fixed" as it will ever be on ps4.

The first time i realized they existed.
I guessed both of them were dead and the bodies would be in one of the only two places that was locked off (research facility or the cave)..
i was right... on most of it.

I really disliked this game. Shame since i was really looking forward to it.

We still hope to see performance improve with the help of an updated version of Unity that has better managed multithreading, but that isn't ready yet. That said, v1.02 (the current PS4 version) is measurably better than the build that was up on launch day.

I felt this game was pretty good, but lacked that bit of polish and longevity that would have made it worth the £12 asking price. I feel a little bit cheated as it feels a little incomplete and the ps4 version should never run like that - the graphics are just about ps3 level.

I would still recommend people give it a go.

Agreed. $20 was a huge ask for an obviously unfinished game, and with performance issues.

I did a second play through last night, because I wanted to take some nice photos to try the Fotodome feature out. My first play though I got scared of using up all my pictures too early and at the end, I had five blanks. I'll post pics once I get them.

My first impression, is it's still fantastic playing a second time. There's SO many dialogue options to choose, it was interesting hearing different conversations and different versions of the conversations (like, if Julia had gone to Yale vs going to Boulder) based on the change in the background choices you make in the beginning.

I enjoyed seeing a different drawing of Henry at the end, this time I went the Bond villain description route and I had Turt Reynolds with me. I also found the dialogue at the end with Delilah not so..bitter? The first time I did the whole "I'm not mad, I'm disappointed"/"Come to Boulder with me"/"It's hard to see her when she doesn't recognize me"; which, really made those whole thing feel really depressing and bitter. This time around I did: "I'm not mad"/"You should go to Santa Fe with your sister"/"I have to figure out how to move on" and it made the whole summer seems more therapeutic for Henry and dissipated that tension I felt between him and D at the end.

I think I'll try going through a third time since there's still a lot of conversations I'd like to try and see what is said. The dialogue is so great!

Question for everyone: I wasn't able to find the dead deer at Wapiti Station with the radio collar. Can anyone tell me how to find it?

Well, he
had a whole lot of trouble trying to keep me from there. Coul
d've solved a lot of problems on all ends. "What's the point". Heh. Kinda lazy.
He's
in a state of grief making him unable to move on, which fits in the theme of all the characters and your own arc. Nobody's come close to finding or even looking for Brian for a while, so he didn't have to deal with that possibility until now,

It seemed really consistent with his character to go "fuck it" but then go through great lengths to indeed remaining fucking it.

On day 78 after you leave brian's hideout and drop back down onto the path between the cave and beartooth point, turn right towards beartooth instead of left towards the cave.

Ok, I was like 1 hour and a half into the game when I got this weird bug and got stuck between a pair of rocks. Then my character fell down through the ground and kept falling like forever. I closed the app and opened it again, only to find that I can not load my game, so I have to star all over again. I'm pissed off right now, I wish I hadn't bought this game.

PS4 btw

Edit: I restarted the game a few hours ago and I just watched the end credits. Overall I found it enjoyable, I liked the story and it keeps you hooked. A bit short, but I was fully aware of that before I bought it.

I finished the game today and really enjoyed it. Evoked a much broader range of emotions than the Campo Santo founder's previous work. I forgot to take some pictures, but I feel like that's just a good reason to play it again.

Performance wasn't very lean. I noticed a bug at the end where a air tanker was just static in mid air while I approached
Delilah's look out
. I found the final conversations kinda sour.

I liked how dense the space was. Sometimes I feel like the camera was animated a little too forcefully. Like when Henry hops down a small ledge. He will go into the animation before you're close. I appreciate they probably wanted to keep them snappy but I often felt like they were at a faster pace to how I was playing.

Will probably save a second play through for when I get a newer GPU. Maybe then I can run it at max and get above 20 fps. Certainly one of the best games I've played in years.

I really rationed the game, I played one chapter per night for 4 nights. Best way to play it I think. It gives you time to think about what's going on in the narrative. Great characters. Hopefully it won't be too long until they can make something this good.

This game has been on my mind for some time. It looks like it'll be quite the narrative experience, and I guess i'm just looking for confirmation.

Should I dive in and get it?

People seem pretty split on their thoughts/opinions on the game. For me, it's the best game I've played in years.

I'd argue it's best to wait for a deal on it. It's very short and the players is pretty divided. I don't think there's any reason to rush to get the game unless you can't find another narrative-central game that interests you. It's a gamble, in my experience.

Just sat down to play this game for real and it's really something special. Probably the most relaxing game I've ever played. I really appreciate it, Campo! Only on day two.

Thanks guys. I'll hold a little longer.

Whereas I would argue if the game has been on your mind for some time, you're probably exactly the right audience for it, you would really enjoy it, and (IMO) we should be supporting the development of indie's like this by not waiting for sales where the developer and publisher make almost zero margin :)

Steam/PSN/XBLA sales have driven us all mad - that we are arguing to wait on a sale for a game that costs as much as a couple of beers or one good glass of wine.

Not actually that important
Any news on bugs/performance fixes? Did Campo Santo share their plans some more (and are keeping word on their promise)?
I'll probably still wait for a deal simply because my backlog is huge but I'd be nice to know they're still committed on improving things, my first-hand experience with the PS4 version was a disaster but some time has passed and I was wonderingly what's up with it.
Seems that the performance debacle cut this game's wings more than a bit, it performed really good sales wise afaik but I feel it could've been much bigger if word of mouth didn't kill it.

FYI, we've been non-stop fixing bugs and improving performance since launch!

PS4 had a really big performance update a couple weeks back that made lots of people very happy — and there's more to come.

Meanwhile we're up to Patch #9 on Steam. :)

And we're not done…
